Sun cream??

Just asking for some perspective and other opinions with this!

im 23 and obviously want to be tanned, but I’m Scottish so it just isn’t meant to be! Ive accepted my extreme paleness and I just use fake tan when needed.

I wear suncream on my face every single day- usually factor 50. My moisturiser has spf in it but I just prefer to use separate spf 50 suncream aswell. I was speaking to a friend about it and they said it was pointless and a waste of time- I’ve been badly sunburned before and spent my childhood playing in the sun so the damage is done already. They also said factor 50 for my face is overkill and ridiculous given where we live in Scotland rarely has any sunny weather.

I thought everyone wore suncream on their face, or that it was at least recommended to help skin? Or am I just wasting my time because I’ve already been burned a lot when I was younger? I’ve been spending a lot of money (for me, anyway) on decent suncream so if it’s pointless I’ll just stop it. We have a family history of skin cancer unfortunately (melanoma which is obviously bad, aswell as BCC and SCC which are usually less serious but I was told it turned nasty and spread and caused the person to sadly pass away) so I’m a bit ott to sun damage but I just wanted to be as protected as possible.

am I wasting my time?

If you don't mind wearing it then ignore her. It's not just about burning. UV exposure will always be ageing.

Bertieboo82 · 08/07/2022 16:36

Oh come on op

seriously?

dementedpixie · 08/07/2022 16:38

No I dont put suncream on my face unless it's sunny and I will be out for a while or I'm on holiday abroad

Belephant · 08/07/2022 16:39

Factor 50 every single day for me 😊

Meraas · 08/07/2022 16:39

Eh? Do you think because you burnt your skin when you were younger, that it’s not possible to burn it anymore?

It can burn plenty more, keep wearing it.

And watch this

EveParker22 · 09/07/2022 15:15

Ok so I'm Scottish too, totally understand your dilemma! I think it's important from an anti-aging and skin cancer perspective to always have SPF on your face. However, I incorporate it through my makeup (Dermalogica SPF primer) (Charlotte tilbury SPF primer) I also recently bought a Garnier product that acts as a 2 in 1. I now only use this as it makes my makeup look better

Also what about adding tanning drops to your moisturizer? I would search "tanning face drops" on Amazon or google and read reviews.

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/07/2022 15:28

Er no, don't stop and don't listen to your friend.

itsgettingweird · 09/07/2022 15:30

I thought you were going to say because it's factor 50!!

I'm sure someone said you don't need higher than 30 once and there was an actual scientific reason?!

I wouldn't wear 50 unless out of direct sun all day. My moisturiser has spf 15.

The best way to expose skin to sun is gently and slowly with the lowest factor needed for exposure rather than complete sun block.

gogohmm · 09/07/2022 15:47

I have factor 30 in my moisturiser, I only add additional sunscreen if I'm in the sun for longer periods, not just going to and from the car

ihavenocats · 09/07/2022 16:09

Personally I only put sunscreen on my face during real heatwaves. I don't use sunscreen at all unless it's between 11 - 3pm and it's approaching 30 degree heat, at which point my child gets factor 50 and I use a tanning spray factor 15.

I've always thought being in sunlight is good for Vitamin D. I don't hold this idea that this planet's atmosphere or the sun is dangerous to us. I'm very easy going and still fit and healthy at 40, must be diong something right. Definitely not overzealous about sunscreen.

Threetulips · 09/07/2022 16:12

I only use cream when it’s hot and sunny.

I use the childrens solid sticks at £3 each in boots. Keep in in my bag just incase the sun comes out.

ThreeLittleDots · 09/07/2022 16:26

For those who only use sunscreen in a heatwave or when it's approaching 30C, you do realise that UV levels have nothing to do with heat, don't you?

doadeer · 09/07/2022 16:30

I wear factor 50 every day. The altruist face fluid is very reasonable.

I would ignore your friend.

I'm loving the Bondi Sands gradual tanner and I use tanning drops on face.

lospolloshermanosass · 09/07/2022 16:35

I wear spf 50 every single day. I'm 38 and get loads of compliments on my skin.

My mum told me to do this, as she spent a lot of time on the sunbeds and lying in the sun in the 80s, and her skin at my age was very leathery and wrinkled, with sun spots.

You'll probably have much nicer skin when you're older than your friend.

millymollymoomoo · 09/07/2022 16:40

I’m nearly 50
wear helliocare factor 50 uv cream everyday, have for years under make up which also has spf

people say I look mid 30s and I don’t have wrinkles or crows feet.

I’ll keep wearing the sun cream even in winter even in England

Bigtruth · 09/07/2022 16:42

Wear Sunscreen.

PinkPlantCase · 09/07/2022 16:42

I don’t put anything on my face daily not moisturiser or suncream. I think a lot of it is marketing.

I wear a hat quite often and rarely have my shoulders exposed if it’s sunny.

I do wear suncream when I’m abroad or if it’s very sunny and I’m out in it for a while. But I generally prefer to cover up than cover myself in gloop, I think it’s healthier.

MsOllie · 09/07/2022 16:46

Factor 50 year round for me on my face and I'm in the NW so it's not overly sunny but UV rays etc and I use retinol

Bertieboo82 · 09/07/2022 16:53

and I'm in the NW so it's not overly sunny

Understatement if ever there was one! 😂

That's what I use, heliocare is the best isn't it.

Well Grin
I'm in Lancashire so yeah, rain 350 days a year
Today is glorious for a change!

Bertieboo82 · 09/07/2022 17:10

Don’t know how you cope tbh!

Siameasy · 09/07/2022 17:14

I’m pale and in the South of England so granted it’s a lot warmer but I start to get my arms and legs out in March (I did this year and 2020) and now have a lovely tan, not a single burn. I then use Green People Suncream SPF30 on the less exposed parts and face once I’m wearing less as a matter of course (usually June here). I use bandanas/hats/sarongs/sunglasses. I believe the sun is important for vitamin D and I’m religious about doing this every year.
So my advice is build up to it and factor 50 is excessive

Holly60 · 09/07/2022 17:17

I wear factor 50 every day on my face. People tend to think I'm about 10 years younger than I am. It might not be the sunscreen but I'm taking no chances 😂
