To ask what films you see differently now than when you watched them as a kid/teenager?

We rewatched Mrs Doubtfire last night. As a kid, I was so on Daniel's side and didn't have much sympathy for Miranda (Sally Field), and couldn't warm to Stu (Pierce Brosnan) at all. Now though, I'm with Miranda all the way. She traded in a husband-child for a man who she can depend on and who loves her kids. Daniel's such a sleaze when they're at the pool too, making the women feel uncomfortable.
(I suppose our outgoing Prime Minister is a good example of people being prepared to overlook huge personal failings if someone is charismatic/"fun" enough.)
Anyway. What other films do you look at completely differently now than when you first watched them?

The Terminator. Still a great film and the amount of male nudity is incredible. I don't remember even noticing that when I was younger but about every 15 minutes there's another naked man.

TheMess · 08/07/2022 21:39

We rewatched Top Gun last week, after seeing Top Gun Maverick, and I kept thinking, 'Why is Iceman getting such a hard time?' He's right about Maverick being a liability, he's pretty gracious about Goose's death, he doesn't make a big deal about being much, much taller than tiny Tom...

And I really didn't notice how utterly shite the script was because I was too busy learning the words to the soundtrack. When Kelly McGillis has that big pretend row with Maverick and gasps something like, 'I didn't want everyone to know.... that I've fallen for you', as if that's something a real human woman would ever say. Hmm

The Breakfast Club. Loved it as a teen but now I think Bender would have been a horribly abusive boyfriend to Claire and I hope she doesn’t get with him.

Ihatewinding · 08/07/2022 21:48

Watched Moulin Rouge recently and realised I recognised the songs and they are actually covers, they even sing Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana! Thought they were all originals when watched as a tween

But she didn't know that at the time and tbh what 13 year old wouldn't.

Ew would you say that if it was a 13 year old girl character and an adult man?

@Inkanta @Gremlinsattack

If you haven't already, read Wide Sargasso Sea

It's a novel about the original Mrs Rochester.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 08/07/2022 22:03

Blue Crush - in my head as I remembered it, it was just a gentle teen movie with the surfing comp..
until I sat down to watch it with dd1. Full of drinking/swearing/sex/ fairly neglectful parenting.
Not a good choice!

Ididanamechange · 08/07/2022 22:09

The Shawshank redemption. I think its still a good film but when I read the book a few years ago King goes into detail of some of the crimes committed by the characters which I don't think get much mention in the film. Basically there's a lot of women killing, Brooksie murdered his wife and child, Red murdered his wife and also killed a child in the process. The book explores whether they deserve redemption the film seems to paint them as sympathetic characters and its bugged me ever since.

It has to be said that another film which really has not aged well is "Birth of a Nation"

PrittStickier · 08/07/2022 22:30

All the rapey ones 😳

Wnikat · 08/07/2022 22:36

Back to the future. His dad is a Peeping Tom and the whole plot revolves around Biff’s attempted rape of his mother.

St Elmos Fire….in my teens I thought they were all SOOO COOOOL and edgy. Watched it again last year and OMG….horrible people, horrible film, horrible behaviour…totally cringed.

Also a bit later all those Hugh Grant 4 Weddings/ Notting Hill type films…loved them at the time…unbearable now!

I don't like the part where Hugh is punched by 'duckie' (I can't remember her name) for jilting her at the altar and I don't think you'd have a scene like that now.

(I should add - I specifically mention the Lindsay Lohan 1990s version as not sure if the original follows the same plot, although it probably does)

I think it is very similar that I remember. I used to like it more than the most recent version. The. twins sang a little song (with banjos or something) which was rather irritating.

But yes, what the parents did was cruel and it's quickly got over and shrugged off by twins in both films.

Brief Encounter
There was an article decades ago in a paper (Graun or Absurder at a guess) saying, basically,
"He probably hangs around railway stations looking for bored gullible housewives to have affairs with and when he realizes he's not going to get his end away, he says he's emigrating to South Africa"
or something
And I've never been able to see it the same way again!

Mrs Doubtfire I never saw at the time, but pulled it up on Prime last year and just couldn't make it past the start, it was just so creepy and disfunctional.

Well it hadn't really aged well long before 2022 to be fair.

Elements of Bridget Jones, talking about how fat she is etc when really she looks perfectly fine

JamesMartinsWaistcoat · 08/07/2022 23:18

Mary Poppins. I was obsessed as a child and only saw the magic.

Re-watched as an adult and was in tears by the end, couldn't believe it had taken me 30-odd years to realise it's about a workaholic father who has been neglecting his wife and children for years.

Mustnotbeleftblank · 08/07/2022 23:26

Another vote for Big. Depending which site you read Josh was as young as 12. The scene where Susan drops him back home and she tells him to look her up when he's older just before he turns back into a child again 🤢

Runnerduck34 · 08/07/2022 23:44

Muriels wedding- as a teen really emphasised with muriel now I really emphasise with her mum.

Pride and prejudice ( film as well as a book so hope it counts!) Used to think Mrs Bennett was annoying and silly, now I think she was justifiably worried about the future and Mr Bennett was completely self absorbed.

In short I now have a lot of sympathy for characters that are middle age women !

Icecreamandapplepie · 08/07/2022 23:50

Jaws.

Now I'm a mum, I cannot watch the scene where the lady's only boy gets eaten as she's watching on the beach.

I watched it so many times before that, and was even watching it when my waters broke funny enough.

She acts it so well. All the other children running out of the water to safety except her boy.

Gah.

Karate kid! The way Daniel treats Ali is awful. He’s worse than Johnny!

That film was widely understood as racist propaganda from first release.

LidlCinnamonBun · 09/07/2022 00:20

I said the same thing when we rewatched it recently.
No wonder Johnny wants to kick his ass all the time.

Pretty woman ...
Young me... Nice romance film, bit of comedy, woman gets lifted from poverty by rich older bloke.
Mid 50s me... omg what a horrid film, she'd be round the bins giving blow jobs to sleazy businessmen for 10bucks a pop. Romanticising prostitution. What message does it send.. you'll be rescued from sleaze when some entitled rich older bloke buys your services and then your life.
Eww.

Totally agree!

Can't watch Gone with the Wind any longer either.

The Little Mermaid, she has to lose her voice and her way of life and family to get the guy…. Made me furious last time I watched it

But Splash is good, the Tom Hanks leaves his way of life to join Darryl Hannah under the sea.
