To not work much on a Friday

I work from home a couple of days a week including a Friday and I can't seem to get motivated at all today. Logged on obviously and answered a couple of emails first thing, then I've tidied the house, put some washing on, looked on facebook, had youtube on, phoned my sister and now it's lunchtime. I'm feeling guilty :( but am I alone? Items on today's list have been crossed through and added to Monday's list!

I get paid to do a job, and I do it very well. Believe me, if I didn't do enough work, or do it properly, it would become very obvious very quickly!

But it's just the nature of it that I can manage it as a weekly thing and pace it however I want to. Divvying tasks up to ensure an even spread and an equal set amount of hours per day makes no sense, and I certainly don't think its in some way morally superior to how I work now

We're actively encouraged to do less on a Friday. The business blanks out our calendars from noon onwards to stop people putting in meetings, and the expectation is that generally, people will be logging off early.

Do you have to make the time up or do you just take the time?

I was more productive than usual for a Friday but have still finished early.

I think you know if you have the sort of job where you manage your own priorities and deadlines, and therefore can flex what and when you do work. I have zero problem with taking it easy for even a couple of days, regardless of weather, if I've delivered what I need to that week/month and know it's an excellent standard. Those who can't imagine this, just have a different sort of job. It's not a question of fairness, just different!

Given the dire levels of service provided by most organisations both public and private since Covid, it appears you are not the only person who uses wfh as a chance to skive.

If you are being paid to work, then you should be working. Unfortunately, people who doss about when they should be working give WFH a bad name

Don’t want to sound miserable but I totally agree with this.

I wfh. I have been working.

We just take the time. There is no official recording of hours worked anyway.

I know it sounds like we're a load of shirkers Grin but it can be quite full on and a lot of hard work at times, and the company just recognises that.

I manage my own work load too.

Difference is if I get ahead or have it all done, instead of dicking around I contact colleagues to see if they need a hand - even though I log on early every day….

I’ve had a very unproductive day, was fine until about noon but the last four hours have been very lazy.

ChrisReasBathEggs · 08/07/2022 16:09

I'm in the wrong job. I WFH in public services and aside from getting a drink or posting a couple of MN comments a day for a (supposed) screen break, I'm working. My boss is very pedantic about being available and is probably spying on me, so no nipping out for anything unless I ask permission and I would have to make up the time if more than 20 min.

OhmygodDont · 08/07/2022 16:59

I can ask anyone if they need help with anything as it’s a completely independent job role to help others with their work I would have to be onsite and my job description is purely and only work from home.

Iheartmysmart · 08/07/2022 17:14

I’ve been working with a US based team all week so haven’t been logging off until quite late each day. The project was delivered yesterday, a day earlier than necessary so my manager told me to take the day off. Fortunately the company I work for thinks sitting in front of a laptop with nothing to do is pointless.

TheOrigRights · 08/07/2022 17:15

POETS day innit

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 08/07/2022 17:28

It's only ok as long as you work for yourself or a private company.

theemmadilemma · 08/07/2022 17:49

Companies are getting the message about happy employees and work life balance. At times I'm in meetings at 7am or 7pm. So on days like today when I want to ease off, if work load allows it, I have no guilt because I'd be encouraged to.

TheKeatingFive · 08/07/2022 18:31

The vote here is quite interesting, compared to the comments.

dolphinsarentcommon · 08/07/2022 18:33

Your manager needs to give you more work to do OP

limitededitionbarbie · 08/07/2022 19:28

I wfh and I put in hours early morning and sometimes later of an evening to justify a chilled Friday.

I plan my own diary so as long as the work is done and the hours accumulated they my boss is fine with that.

Deodrant · 20/07/2022 15:27

Anyone been the same these last few days due to the heat?
