New job. Or not. Help me decide!

I’ve been in my current job 5 years. It’s a supervisory role along with technical things to do (sorry for being vague). During the pandemic it was awful, due to furlough I was pretty much doing 2.5 peoples roles.

I’ve not had a pay rise at all for 3 years, I’m the lowest paid person on my grade and there are people on my team paid more than me.

i work for one specific client. The contract we have was due to be renewed recently and they made a bit of a fuss about signing the new contract: as a result, when an agency contacted me about a job, I thought I’d give it a go, just in case.

I got offered the job.

No supervisory duties. Comparable benefits.

salary: almost double my
current salary!

i really like my current job, but am struggling with money. Plus in 2 years the contracts are up for renewal again and this time will be going to tender. If the contract is lost, the company will try to find me an alt role or I’ll be made redundant.

I don’t know what to do! My current employer is very flexible. I really do like my job.

if I spoke to my current employer it’s possible they could give me a slight inc, but still nothing like the new place and not at the same level as the others on my grade.

But: almost double money. Argh.

YABU: Take the new job, you fool!
YANBU: if you like your current job, stay

Take the new job.

MarieG10 · 08/07/2022 07:28

Take the new job. It seems clear your current employer isn't valuing you and the new one clearly thinks the new salary is worth paying you. Congratulations. You will most likely find it a great move

Take the job!

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 08/07/2022 07:30

I think another issue is that I don’t feel that I’m worth the money the new place has offered.

I think you have to take it, don't you.

wibblywobblybits · 08/07/2022 07:36

Surely this is a no brainer? You're not a charity and you don't work for the "fun" of it - you work to get paid and if someone wants to make your life easier by paying you more money then take it and run.

Believe in yourself, if the new job wants to offer you that money then they clearly think you're worth it. As long as you know you've been truthful about your skills / experience and what you can offer to the role then it's down to them to decide how much they're willing to pay you to do that.

devildeepbluesea · 08/07/2022 07:38

Why on earth are you even questioning this?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/07/2022 07:38

Take the job. It’s a no brainer!

New job, unless you love the old job enough to work there for a whole year for free?
Old job might not exist in 2 years' time. By then, you could have earned a whole extra year's salary at the new place. Or worked for a year and taken a year off.

whereiscaroline · 08/07/2022 07:50

Stop doubting yourself. If you weren't worth it, you wouldn't have been offered it. Your current employer clearly doesn't value you. Hand in your notice and work on your confidence a bit in the meantime.

iwannascream · 08/07/2022 08:11

Roughly how much money are you talking about ? It helps to see it written down.

I too am working in a role that I am very much underpaid for, but I just havent got the oomph to push myself to look for another role, at mid fifties I just see the starting over and getting to know everyone at a new job as a major pain. I do feel resentful and some days I want to tell my boss where to shove his job, but so far I've managed to keep that in my head :)

However if I was younger I would jump at the chance to move and for double the wage must be an amazing feeling and believe me your new Company think you are worth it or they would have offered you less.

Well done and good luck

HandbagsnGladrags · 08/07/2022 08:12

Sounds like a no brainer to me. Take the job.

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 08/07/2022 08:14

It’s a total no-brainer. Take the new job.

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 08/07/2022 08:15

If you don’t take the job, I will!

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 08/07/2022 08:20

Thanks everyone.

i think I’m just scared. I’m actually going to the New Place today to see them in person as I’ve only had remote interviews.

The new salary is over £25k more than my current one, for the person who asked

Imposter syndrome. You are worth it. Take it!

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 08/07/2022 08:27

Have no loyalty to any company. They'd all replace you easily. Take the job.

Is this perhaps the real issue? You can trust the new employer to know best on what they want to offer, and what they want to offer you. It does sound as though your previous salary has fallen badly behind.

I think you will regret not going for this, and then your existing job is unlikely to be enough anyway.
