To be pissed off with bees terrorising my garden

InsomniacVampire · 07/07/2022 19:34

While mowing the grass, we found out we have a bumblebee nest in the garden- in the gorund, which I didnt even know is a thing. Not at the very far end where we dont use much anyways, but right at the very beginning of it, near the kitchen door. We cant use the garden at all, as contrary to what uncle Google says, they attack kids and me whenever we approach.
How do I get rid (I know I know bees are the future, but I want my garden!). it's hot, kids are going mental inside, and we're stuck inside as we can't use the garden because of mental bees. And it takes months for them to move nests :(

There will probably be a local beekeeping group. Check social media and Google. One of them may be willing to relocate them.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 07/07/2022 19:38

Oh for goodness sake, get a grip. They're only bees. Research some nice plants for them and be grateful they enable us to consume all the fruit and veg we eat.

BetsysBeended410yrs · 07/07/2022 19:40

Contact a local bee keeping group who safely remove the hive and relocate them.

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy Are you volunteering to take them away please? Thanks!

I had a beehive set up camp under my front porch. If you opened the door, they'd start buzzing. If you stood chatting, they'd start flying out of the hive. Then loads would be flying in circles round the hive.

We couldn't use the front door. The postman refused to deliver to my house. It isn't always as simple as "they're just bees so be thankful."

Sometimes you need to have them safely moved.

Squirrelsnut · 07/07/2022 19:43

Please have them safely moved, don't kill them for God's sake!

I do understand though- a friend had a scary experience when the queen flew into his house and rest swarmed to try and follow her..

BreadInCaptivity · 07/07/2022 19:46

Contact your local bee keepers association.

They will help relocate the hive.

littlepeas · 07/07/2022 19:47

Do not Google bumble bee nest if you tend toward trypophobia!

InsomniacVampire · 07/07/2022 19:48

@Squirrelsnut I wasnt planning on killing them, would not know how to anyways, but yeah it's not safe with kids around as they keep in attacking them when they run around, they attacked my partner when he went out, and we literally can't open the garden door at all because of it.

Echoing pp, contact beekeepers. Someone will gladly take them

BertieQueen · 07/07/2022 19:50

Contact your local bee keepers they will move the nest for you. We have had nests removed before from our garden so we could use it 👍

CrowsEverywhere · 07/07/2022 19:53

Someone wearing a bee suit can relocate them by effectively digging the nest out with a shovel. The nests are about the size of a football and this is the time of year the colony will be biggest.

badhappening · 07/07/2022 19:56

I've never heard of mental bees before 🐝😂

Are you aware that they are on the decline and do you even know the implications of that?

Get in touch with a local bee group who will be more than happy to take them away.

Have you heard of GOOGLE?

InsomniacVampire · 07/07/2022 19:58

@badhappening Captaion Obvious strikes again! 😂

BasiliskStare · 07/07/2022 20:00

I echo other posters - we need bees - google and phone I would bet folding money someone will come and take that nest from you.

CTPT · 07/07/2022 20:02

If they're bumble bees I doubt beekeeping groups will be interested or come remove it as I think generally they'll only move honey bees.

They'll be gone soon, I'd just leave them.

Welshrarebit75 · 07/07/2022 20:02

Unlikely that bee keepers will move bumblebees for anyone; they normally will only come out for honeybee swarms removal. They normally advise leaving bumblebee’s and pest control for wasps.

Would you like them in your garden attacking your children?
You have my sympathies op. I left one in my garden until my dd went outside and one stung her eyeball. I phoned 111 who sent out a first responder who phoned for an ambulance himself the second he saw the state of her face. There will be people on google who can come and remove the nest for free

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/07/2022 20:21

Could you capture one bee, take it indoors and give it a stern talking to and suggest it talks to its fellow workers and they find a new home?

This is what we did with squatters and 'lo and behold' it worked. They moved away. The police helped too.

Random789 · 07/07/2022 20:28

Meh, we had a bees nest at the top of our front door a while ago. The only hassle was the slowly dripping honey. We've also had them at various parts of the garden without any incdent at all. The only thing that slightly pissed me off once was when they squatted in my compost bin.

I'm sure that you and your children would be able to use the garden despite their presence.

Diversion · 07/07/2022 20:32

We had a bumble bee nest in our garden a few years ago, they had dug a hole under a rock holding our parasol down. We sat very close by and watched them for hours and hours and they never bothered us once even when we lifted the rock to have a closer look. There were around 100 bees in there. I wonder why yours are so aggressive? Ours left around the end of August beginning of September.

Beekeepers won't touch a bumble nest. If you've disturbed them they'll will look like they're bothering you but they're just a bit lost.

The nest won't be there much longer. So you have a choice, you can wait it out for a few more weeks, or you kill them off.

Ownedbymycats · 07/07/2022 20:33

We had a nest of white tailed bumble bees in the garden last year at a distance where they caused no issues and they were fascinating.
All I can do is repeat what others have said re a local bee keeper.

gamerchick · 07/07/2022 20:34

Ridiculous to say bumbles attack though. Are you sure they're bumbles?

picklemewalnuts · 07/07/2022 20:35

They really shouldn't cause you trouble, if you don't disturb them first.
