To be struggling this much without a TV?

We are in rented accommodation and can’t get the TV to connect.

I never thought I watched a lot but I am really missing it. I just want to be able to put a bit of CBeebies on for the kids and watch the odd programme myself!

Have you got a laptop or computer they can watch iplayer on? I lived without a TV for ages and just watched things on my laptop

Mine grabs and jabs the phone so the show goes off Smile

If it's a smart phone it should have a child lock? iPhone has a button sequence you press to 'lock' the the screen and buttons, therefore kids can't accidentally turn the show off/open other apps

if your internet is ok and its just the TV won't connect a Firestick or Roku should work, we used a Roku on an old TV that didn't connect to internet.

RampantIvy · 07/07/2022 18:36

YABVU. I haven't had a tv for years and don't miss it.

Gosh, it's a good job we aren't all as morally superior as you @DrDetriment. I enjoy a good crime drama, watching Glastonbury or an educational documentary.

I also belong to a fund raidsing group and book group, pottering in the garden, going to the cinema and theatre, listening to classical music or going for a long country walk.

It is perfectly possible to enjoy lofty past-times and watch TV you know Hmm

YABVU for being so judgemental and thinking that you are better than people who enjoy watching TV.

Is the problem your wifi as I see upthread a fire stick won't work

TyrianBannister · 07/07/2022 18:38

Could you maybe buy a piano and have recitals? Something highbrow, like Schubert.

AmbushedByCake · 07/07/2022 18:38

What did we do with kids before we relied on screens to entertain them?

Chucked them all out into the street to amuse themselves until teatime, according to my parents and my memories of the 80s. The younger children of SAHMs played in the garden while the mothers smoked, drank coffee and gossiped. Much better than 20 minutes of Mr Tumble.

GerryAtrick · 07/07/2022 18:38

Just go sit in the garden if you have one. It's the middle of summer and your toddler would benefit far more from being outside.

Bananaandraisins · 07/07/2022 18:42

@GerryAtrick toddler needs supervision in the garden. This is where CBeebies does have the edge, just for a few minutes. He also wakes very early.

Hmmm what's the matter with the firestick? Is it something a factory reset might solve? Amazon have a tech helpline you could try calling. I am assuming your TV doesn't have any smart features at all? My current TV is about 7 years old and I'm fairly sure gets iPlayer.

If you can bear the outlay I'd recommend a Google Chromecast. Cast from your phone (I have an android phone, don't know if it works with iPhones). I have a cheap one which was about £30. I can cast iPlayer, Disney plus, netflix etc.

Bananaandraisins · 07/07/2022 18:45

The TV has smart features, but there are endless problems connecting. No idea why when my phone is fine.

I can’t wait to move; complete pain.

😂

Thethreecs · 07/07/2022 18:48

Is your Internet working? Can you download a mirroring app? You can then connect to your TV and play what is on your phone on your TV screen.

Bananaandraisins · 07/07/2022 18:49

would That work, if the TV won’t reliably connect to the internet?

@AmbushedByCake the good old days!!

DrDetriment · 07/07/2022 18:52

RampantIvy · 07/07/2022 18:45

😂

Actually I do have a piano and play Schubert 😂. Look, I'm not trying to be morally superior, just answering the OP's question of is she being unreasonable. Yes she is. Kids and adults survive without TVs so why not take the opportunity to install better habits now? You might find other things that you had never thought of.

bellac11 · 07/07/2022 18:54

I love the telly, I would miss it if I didnt have it even though most of the things I watch Ive already seen or already know about.

I dont like watching things on a laptop and dont like watching things on internet channels like youtube or other things, I like telly thats on the telly.

Bananaandraisins · 07/07/2022 18:55

I don’t see TV as a bad habit tbh. In excess it is, absolutely, but so is anything.

Just like @DrDetriment ?

Sorry, No probably not. The TV needs to be connected to the Internet. I thought your Internet was working as your devices are working.

Is there nothing your landlord can do?

It's a right pain not having a TV. We're not huge watchers here but when you don't have one working you really notice it.

11Hawkins · 07/07/2022 19:03

Can't you just connect to YouTube?

Augend23 · 07/07/2022 19:05

Does your TV have an ethernet port? You might be able to hard wire it in? I can do that with myine. The other thing you could test is if it can connect to a hotspot on your phone. That's not useful long term but is a useful test on if the problem is your WiFi or the TV.

User74936782 · 07/07/2022 19:05

Could you get a set top aerial, that might work, there are some on Amazon or Argos for about £10

WinterMusings · 07/07/2022 19:07

Bananaandraisins · 07/07/2022 18:12

Same @chilledbubble

@DrDetriment my 18 month old can’t read independently yet. We’re working on it.

What? 18 months & not yet read the classics?? Pull your socks up!!

🤣🤣you're doing fine if they're not eating the books!!

WinterMusings · 07/07/2022 19:09

@Bananaandraisins

oh & not sure why you're getting so many unhelpful posts??

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what you need to do exactly, but hold out for someone actually helpful!! 🌷
