Hacked by a friend or coincidence?

I fell out with a friend, as I'd found her behaviour toxic for years and that she was very selfish towards me. One day I'd had enough and confronted her. Understandably she didn't take it well and blocked me on everything, we haven't spoken since. Well I apologised at one point, for some reason I felt guilty, she accepted it but we're no longer in contact.
She lives abroad in a small ish city.
Not long ago I discovered I had been hacked on 2 accounts, one was Itunes and one on Google.
Apparently the person had tried to log in from the city she lives in. Maybe it's pure coincidence but it seems very suspicious that it's the exact city abroad she lives in.
She once tried to have me make a fake account to stalk a guy she likes on Instagram so I wouldn't even put it past her.
I've recovered my accounts now, but do you think I'm overthinking it? At the same time, what interest would she have in doing it?

How did you find out the location of the hacker? If it was a “someone in Birmingham used your account at 8.07” messages or whatever they are notoriously unreliable. I’m in Devon and I get these messages whenever my son, who is normally in the same room, uses something on my Google account and it often comes up with Shrewsbury or Birmingham as the location.

That said, does she know any of your passwords? If she does get them all changed, if she doesn’t it would take a lot of effort to hack in and unless you think she’s looking for specific information or something it ls not something that would reward her in any way.

TheSoundOfLunch · 07/07/2022 10:49

Your guess is probably right, but what difference does it make? She was an arse and she still is. Change all your passwords.

Meraas · 07/07/2022 10:55

How do you think she hacked your accounts? Do you have an easy password or would she know the answers to your security questions?

Caribou1 · 07/07/2022 10:59

I just got a notification from Apple saying my account had been locked because someone from that specific city had tried to hack into it.
It may be someone else and I might be totally wrong, but if it's her I just find it incredibly creepy. I'm not sure what she'd be looking to gain from it

Once would be a coincidence, 3 times from 3 different services….not so much, she’s an idiot. Change all your passwords for everything and put on 2 factor authentication as well. You didn’t give her an older device like a phone or a tablet did you? Or you lost a phone, that she’s taken. I’m just wondering if she’s trying to reactive an old device.

Fayekrista · 07/07/2022 12:19

It may be a coincidence it may not, I guess there's no way to really know for sure.
My 1st thought was also an old device you may have gave/sold to her??

Moving forward, change all passwords, set up 2 x authentication, make sure you're memorable info isn't something she would know. Go through your social media & lock down on privacy settings as much as possible.
Block her from all & every account.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 07/07/2022 12:35

On the positive side you can now be absolutely certain removing her from your life was the right thing to do, and you had no reason to apologise. Set up 2 factor authentication on everything you can.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 07/07/2022 12:45

The location can easily be faked. In fact if someone was going to hack they would use a proxy server or geo-spoof their IP address.

That said, it is a coincidence if they happen to pick her city. Change all your passwords and setup multi-authentication on your accounts and monitor what you can for a bit.
I use a secure password database for work and have started using it in my personal life too. It's really handy!

Badgirlriri · 07/07/2022 12:57

I think it’s just a coincidence. Why would she want to hack your iTunes? What reason?
also, I get “log in attempts” from different places when it’s actually me sat at home.

Oceanus · 07/07/2022 13:25

If there's one thing I've learnt this year is that people always manage to find new ways to sink lower than before. You think they've hit rock-bottom but they always manage to go bigger and bolder.
Change your email in all your accounts, notify apple, the bank and your mobile phone supplier. Check with utility companies too.
You knew your friend was a cunt and should have followed your gut, which is what I wish I'd done too.
If you really want to teach her a lesson, report to the police, I think that's fraud and it could potentially lead to sth bigger because she knows a lot about you: address, birthday, mum's name...! Basically all the info you use for passwords.

Oceanus · 07/07/2022 13:27

As for it being a coincidence, it's from the same city... Well, I doubt she even knows what an effing VPN is. Apple's different to other brands, she probably doesn't know you're getting notifications telling you where the login attempt came from.

jalapenita · 07/07/2022 14:25

But if a big coincidence if she lives in a small city abroad, I'd say.
