To ask how the fuck I get my waist size down?

Miffee · 06/07/2022 08:17

I have lost a lot of weight. From quite obese to healthy BMI. I did it slowly following all the proper medical advice.

My waist size is still in the high risk category. It's not excess skin, I lost it really slowly so I have no visible signs of rapid weight loss. Visibly you can see my belly is a bit fat but it doesn't look hugely out of proportion. I wear snug fitting clothes and look pretty good fine.

Has this happened yo anybody else? Do I just stick with it? I am still losing weight at a slow pace. Will it all just come off my belly or is that nieve? I have give up Googling this stuff because of the amount of pseudoscience on the Internet and the reputable sources focus much more on BMI despite emphasising the importance of waist size.

So you've got a predisposition of a smaller waist if you are pear shaped. i find lower carbing and limiting processed food is great to decrease bloat on my waist!

Ourlady · 06/07/2022 10:06

I couldn’t hula hoop to save my life with one of the lightweight hoops, never could but the weighted ones are easy. It must be because they are heavy so don’t drop as easily but honestly, I was amazed I could do it. It’s a bloody good workout.

Dixiechickonhols · 06/07/2022 10:07

Chazx I’m 5 ft 8. Your broad rib frame comment stands out to me. I have a big frame - big hands (man’s gloves) big head (hats don’t fit) large size 8 feet, big wrists. It makes sense to me that my waist would be bigger than someone with a smaller bone structure. At my lowest I was 10 4 and too thin for me. I had an over 40 health check and everything was perfect maybe book one if you haven’t op mine was done by a local pharmacy but on nhs.

Chazx · 06/07/2022 10:10

@Dixiechickonhols I had one last year and blood ssugar/cholesteral levels all good, in fact i think I was told the levels were very good.

Sorry Chazx I saw you’d had one I meant Op could book one. Not sure if area specific. I found it reassuring. Very good is excellent news.

Sorry if this has already been said, but I had diastasis recti from my c-sections. Left me looking still pregnant. Losing weight doesn’t change that. I went to a womens health physio who checked the extent of the diastasis recti and then monitored its response to the exercises I did. Once she was sure I wasn’t going to cause more damage she recommended planks. I started with knee planks. I literally did two 20 second ones per day and within a week and my waist completely changed shape. Sucking in your stomach muscles when lifting and walking upstairs really helped as well.

My mum had similar, she dropped a few dress sizes after a health scare but still felt round. It's only when she had her cholesterol levels tested via the GP they found they were off the chart.
She changed her diet (so more focused on health than weight) and the visceral fat just melted off her middle.
I know you said you've dieted slowly but I just wonder if it's something similar? So not a calorie issue but a nutrient/fat one? Maybe something else to investigate?

@SareBear87 Id be interested to know what foods your mum was eating as I would say my food intake is healthy … fresh vegetables and a small amount of fruit, nothing low fat just less of regular versions, no added sugar or processed white stodge, fish, chicken and a small amount of red meat Occasionally. All within a calorie allowance split between 2 meals a day and my middle hasn’t really budged.

Hoolahoophop · 06/07/2022 11:11

@Itstrue22 can I ask what exercises you did initially? I have DR and want to try to improve it a bit so I can move on to planks etc. As I'm still looking pregnant several years after my last baby was born.

I also love the idea of the hoola hoop

Op have you been checked for Diastasis recti?

Itstrue22 · 06/07/2022 12:04

@Hoolahoophop to start it was just sucking in abdomen muscles as much as I could when doing anything - lifting, pushing and carrying things. I know it helps to engage pelvic floor at the same time, but not always easy to remember. I started to feel stronger after doing this religiously for a week. Sucking them in whilst climbing up two flights of stairs carrying a one year old was intense!

Once the physio saw an improvement from just doing that she was happy to start on planks. Started with knee planks in the aim to move up to normal planks. Knee planks are pretty gentle so holding for as long as is comfortable/for 10 seconds, maybe just doing one or two and then building up. Don’t continue if you feel any pain. I built up to a few a day for 20 seconds and change was immediate. Everyone noticed. I became pregnant again a few weeks later so stopped so that’s all I’ve got but I was meant to build up to normal planks.

Physio made a real point of planks being the answer. Other exercises don’t target those deep abdomen muscles in the same way.

It may just be your build, we don't all fix in neat little boxes for the NHS to tick.

I would throw in some full body routines into your exercise plan. Focus on general body strength as well as cardio fitness, getting your core strong again will help considerably.

But mainly just focus on health, if you have cardio fitness and are in a healthy weight range, I would tend to ignore these other measures that just don't fix every body type of take into account height and all kinds of other things.

ffs

Hoolahoophop · 06/07/2022 12:16

@Itstrue22 brilliant thank you. I'm off to do some planks! I always had really strong abs before pregnancy. Down to Pilates on top of natural strength I think. Now no strength at all. Will try the planks though. Thanks

@Miffee I can't answer your question, but I wondered if you minded me jumping in and asking what your key resources were, that helped you lose weight? And how you did it? My weight is going down (very slowly, but I'm focussed on the super long term) but just thought you must have advice?

Like you my focus isn't really what I look like, and it's so difficult to find stuff that isn't about dropping a dress size in however many weeks.

jeffersonsam · 06/07/2022 12:29

Hey do you issue with belly fat or whole body weight loss issues?
If you wants to lose your body weight just follow food diet and doing simple workouts regularly. Don't expect quick results. For reducing belly fat, there are lots of simple workouts avaialble in the website. Shit up, jumping jack, air cycling, puch up and planks. These workouts will surely lose your waist size down.

My lifestyle was awful. Eating, sleeping, exercise. All terrible.

If you PM me I am happy to give specific resources and advice but my main bit of advice is general.

If you are like me with a shitty life style and you want to change it recognise the enormity of what you want to achieve without letting it overwhelm you.

Think of it like you need to decorate your whole house. If you were going to to that you would need time and resources and knowledge. You wouldn't expect yourself to do it all at once and feel guilty you were doing the bathroom while the bedroom needed doing. You'd prioritise and learn as you went. You would start simple and obvious. When you've done a room you'd enjoy it and think if the benefits and it would be motivation for the next room. If you fucked something up you wouldn't give up.

I dunno maybe it's a shit analogy (because honestly I hate decorating and probably would give up) but that's how I retained my motivation I switched from thinking "I need to change so much I dont know where to start so I won't bother" to "I need to change so much I can just pick a couple of things to sort out and when thats sorted I'll think of another". I lost a lot of weight (from fairly far into obese to a bit overwheight) with just obvious stuff (giving up sugar in drinks, not buying junk food, walking whenever I could) and only started researching more once I hit a plateau but at that point I was really motivated.

This can be age dependent too. If you are in peri menopause or menopause then HRT can help along with kettle bell type exercise.

HIT is a no once you hit this age and trying to lose weight. You can swim and jog etc still but only for 30 mins at a slow pace.

It's all to do with hormones.

But I'm not sure if your age etc of course.

Livingmybestlifenow · 06/07/2022 23:51

Have you checked waist to hip ratio?
Waist cm/hip cm
0.80 or lower is healthy, anything over 0.85 is something to continue working on, anything in between you should keep an eye on.

Yours sounds better 😂
