AIBU to burn all my clothes?

Okay, a bit of a dramatic title but I just can't get my style right, especially in the summer, and this means I end up going through fads, buying lots of clothes then HATING photos of me in them.
So latest is ‘trendy shirts casually tucked into ‘mom’ jeans or trackie bottoms if at home. But the photo I saw of me yesterday, it makes me look like a round ball of dough. I’m a size 10-12, supposedly strawberry shaped so busty with a super short torso.

I KNOW wrap dresses suit me but I don’t want to wear bloody wrap dresses all the time. I’m out a ‘dress’ person, my ideal outfit is leggings and baggy tees but oh of course, that’s not in fashion plus that’s not flattering either. I just feel so lost with my style and don’t know what to do. I waste money, clothes and time trying to keep up with trends while also trying to suit my body shape but then I end up looking awful. At my wit’s end tbh. Any advice?

Ok, deep breath!
start with one PERFECT outfit.
go shopping with a friend, keep it simple to start with. Get the best jeans you can find, add a beautiful shirt, sandals and a great bag. Then gradually build on that. I have a bit of a uniform, know what suits me, so when I find something I like, I go for it
buy less!

Wear what suits you, not what's in fashion.

Search out shops or online suppliers that do what suits you in a way that you like and stick to them.

Whatever clothes you get rid of, sell or donate,

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 07:10

Forget about what's fashionable. A lot of people look terrible in the current tucked in or leggings and crop top styles and it's completely baffling how they're so keen to follow a style that they'd run a mile from if it wasn't 'in'. Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

I'm not a dress person either but I recently bought a couple as I had a few events where I needed to look a bit more groomed/professional and I didn't really have anything suitable. I found that they're so easy to wear, comfortable in hot weather and I actually felt good in them so I've vowed to wear more dresses even though it doesn't feel like 'me'.

No burning ! Stick anything you want rid of on Vinted.

And not just because I’m forever lurking for new stuff to buy. But you can “cash in” on what doesn’t work for you and use that money to try out new stuff you think will work better without spending a fortune. I’ve got loads of stuff on the way that my sister insists will suit me. She’s right 9/10. But this way my sceptical self can try new shapes and options on the cheap.

Wear what suits you or don't mind that it doesn't.This is the same for everyone.Lots or women can't wear wrap dresses and would like to for example.

Cantanka · 06/07/2022 07:52

I totally get where you’re coming from. Since having children, my body shape has changed a bit even though I’m the same weight but I just haven’t really thought about my appearance properly with babies and lockdown and all that; and now I want to maybe take care of myself a bit more, I’ve no idea where to start!

SmileyPiuPiu · 06/07/2022 07:56

Don't burn it! Try and sell it to other fools/people who it does suit.

Then use the money to go shopping and find one outfit that you like that you think suits you. Ignore fashion trends go with what you like. It's very hard when the shops are full of things that don't suit though. I remember a few years back it was all cropped t-shirts and flamingos, which didn't suit me and I have a phobia of birds.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/07/2022 09:10

Buy what suits you rather than following high fashion.

You won't find me anywhere near a pouffy floral maxi-dress because I know that the little girl playing dress-up in a 70s nightie is not a look I rock. I don't have the height and am neither willowy or curvy enough to pull it off without looking drowned.

There is a happy place on the fringes that doesn't date as easily. I might have to update jeans styles from bootleg to skinny to straight every so many years, but teamed up with fairly simple tops, it's a simple look that suits me and doesn't date heavily.

Sometimes fasions suit me better and I buy more, times like now where it's doing nothing for me, I rein back and keep to the basics.

Accessories are a way that things can be freshened up.

What do you want to emphisise or hide? I'm assuming that if wrap dresses work for you, you have a decent bust: waist ratio that suits a fairly close/ fitted look.

I wrote a long message with links in there!!!

this will suit your shape I think-

deep v neck t shirt- Cos has a lovely one in the sale (£11) buy a couple.
wide leg cotton trousers- marks and Spencer’s has loads in all different colours and lengths. A slight crop will look good on you
tan staple sandals. Dune have a pair in tensile for £30. They are really nice and classic. Will last for ages.

use this as a “uniform” base and play around with tops-
deep v or scoop. Different colours. No patterns

mom jeans, wide leg trousers, floppy shorts- big bold as you like. You want to balance your top and bottom halves.
