My dd15 recently got a job as a KP in a pub, she needed the money so thought it would be a great idea. Now the only problem is is that she often has to work until past 12, even on weekdays, AIBU to think this is too late for someone under 16? She doesn't complain about it and just gets on with it along with all her school work, but she has been very tired recently and always stressed out. She will often work from 6pm until 12, without a break. Am I being unreasonable to think it's a bit too much?

Isn’t that illegal at 15?? Too many hours and too late

electricdreaming · 05/07/2022 23:02

Not sure about the rules specifically for under 16s but everyone under 18 is entitled to a 30 minute break if they work longer than 4.5 hours and it’s illegal for them to work past midnight. I’d imagine that under 16s would have even more protection but I’m not sure about the law around that. I used to work in a bar/restaurant with under 18s and they were very strict about working times and breaks - it’s against the law not to follow these regulations and I imagine they could be shut down if found out.

It is to much. Are you uk? See the legal restrictions here - www.gov.uk/child-employment/restrictions-on-child-employment

Notimeforaname · 05/07/2022 23:02

If she likes it and is doing well In school what's the harm.
I was 15 in 2002, so not a million years ago and did the same as your daughter but in a pizza place. I've always had a job since. My sister was the same and most of my friends.

I dont know many young people nowadays who want to work a few hours, let alone actually do it. Good on your daughter 😀

Agreed, I'm not Mumsnet literate enough to add a link but check the gov.uk website as that sounds illegal - 15 year olds fall under child employment restrictions

Notimeforaname · 05/07/2022 23:03

Ah I missed the bit about no break! This is unacceptable

What time is the kitchen open until? I've never known KPS to work as late as midnight

SammyScrounge · 05/07/2022 23:29

Those are ridiculous hours for a child her age. Saturday job in an office or shop would be better than a pub anyway. I'm amazed a publican took her on.

LaFloristaCalista · 06/07/2022 06:07

My son works in a pub and under 18s are not allowed to work after 10pm. I don't think the hours you are mentioning are legal for a 15 year old

Benjispruce4 · 06/07/2022 06:13

Not sure what a KP is. Seems a bit much. At 16 DD worked at a coffee house, sometimes past 10pm at weekends. DD2 17 did bar work sometimes past 12 in 6th form but at weekends.

Benjispruce4 · 06/07/2022 06:14

@SammyScrounge Saturday jobs don’t really exist anymore.

PeanutButterOnToad · 06/07/2022 06:33

I do understand the working after midnight, in most restaurants kitchen porters (KPs) are the last ones out of the kitchen as they usually have to mop the floor at the end. It is not a job for a 15yo though - her employment conditions are illegal.

crossstitchingnana · 06/07/2022 06:46

Under 18s have to stop work by 10pm

Benjispruce4 · 06/07/2022 07:10

@crossstitchingnana saadly many landlords don’t adhere to that. If you make noises about it you don’t get shifts. Zero hrs contracts mostly.

Beautiful3 · 06/07/2022 07:13

I'd contact them and explain that it's affecting school, so the finish time has to be 10pm apart from fri/sat.
