Just bought a smoothie maker was all pleased with it so bought a load of frozen fruit. Was all fine u till I defrosted some cherries on the side in the cup it comes with - shortly after having the smoothie got bad cramps and woke up the next day with extreme d and v - could it be this? Should I stop using frozen fruit or do something with it first? It’s put me right off and I’ve bought shed loads!

Could be a coincidence, could be that your body isn’t used to that large quantity of fruit in one go?

TibetanTerrah · 05/07/2022 10:57

Your body probably isn't used to it. If it were me i would leave it a few days and then make a small one and build up slowly!

ilovesooty · 05/07/2022 10:57

You've probably overdone it.

There are other things you can do with frozen fruit anyway.

Harridance · 05/07/2022 10:57

I use frozen fruit alot, never happened to me, not saying it wasn't the fruit mind

BlackeyedSusan · 05/07/2022 10:58

just put a bit of it at a time in custard or on porridge or rice pudding or icecream

Bubblebubblebah · 05/07/2022 10:59

What else went into that smoothie? Cherries can act as laxative in large amount btw

StarWarsisthebest · 05/07/2022 11:01

I certainly would not throw this fruit away. That is so wasteful. As others have said, it may have been too much in one go for your body. I always use my fruit and veg from frozen for smoothies and then add liquid such as apple juice or oat milk.
If you don’t want to make somethies then just do some overnight oats with the frozen fruit or make some crumbles or pies.

TuftyMarmoset · 05/07/2022 11:03

It’s unlikely to be a problem with the fruit being frozen. More likely is that you had more of them than you’re used to - see the Sarah Millican bit about apricots Grin
You could always bake them into something if you’re worried, the heat would kill any germs.

dolphinsarentcommon · 05/07/2022 11:05

If you're really worried just stew it all and make a compote. You can refreeze in portions. That'll kill anything

popcorndiva · 05/07/2022 11:06

Yep when my DS has lots of fruit at nursery he next day is always lots of runny poos. Fruit contains lots of fibre. Smoothies usually only have some fruit with yoghurt, chia seeds, oats, protein powder in it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/07/2022 11:08

Did the cherries have stones in them?

jeaux90 · 05/07/2022 11:08

Was it a lot of Cherries? They have a particular something in (can't remember the name) that can cause these problems especially if you eat too many

Wheretheskyisblue · 05/07/2022 11:09

I would cook it, either in a fruit crumble or put some at the bottom of ramakins and cover with chocolate cake mixture.

Crackercrazy · 05/07/2022 11:20

My DH overdid the blackberry crumble one time and was pretty sick with diarrhoea.
He wouldn’t have it that he’d been a greedy pig though! (Not saying you are OP but fruit overload can have this affect).

Thebeastofsleep · 05/07/2022 11:22

Was it a fruit only smoothie? Do you usually eat lots of fruit?

My smoothies contain a small handful of fruit then yogurt, peanut butter and oats for protein. I use milk, not fruit juice as well.

Proudboomer · 05/07/2022 11:23

When you blend fruit you breakup the fibre so although you get the good vitamins and other nutrients you lack fibre. The best way to eat fruit is whole.
Either use the fruit in cooking or offer it on any local Facebook free site just don’t throw it away as someone else can probably make use of it.

Hillrunning · 05/07/2022 11:24

Sounds like you just had too much. What else went into the smoothie?

Lennon80 · 05/07/2022 11:26

It was pitted morello cherries I’d say about 12 and I’ve had fruit smoothies before with lots of other fruit no issues?
I don’t want to waste the fruit so should I just assume it was this batch? It wasn’t just runny poo it was horrific vomiting and water poo shaking and sweating for 24 hours so I’m assuming food poisoning as this was only thing I’ve had the rest of my family hasn’t?
mid i boil the fruit to kill germs would that strip all nutritional value?

Why did you defrost the fruit? Mine always go in frozen.

Lennon80 · 05/07/2022 11:29

I wasn’t sure this blender could handle it frozen. Would that be safer in future?

StarWarsisthebest · 05/07/2022 11:41

I have just looked at Google and there have been links to food poisoning and frozen fruit so it may be worth finding the packaging if you can and reporting it.

FAQs · 05/07/2022 11:42

It does sound like a bad batch.

Lennon80 · 05/07/2022 11:51

Yes I still have it in the freezer

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 05/07/2022 12:01

I have never defrosted fruit for a smoothie.

But you need to be careful if your just having whole cups of fruit blended. As that’s a large amount of fruit at once. Would you have eaten it all whole in one sitting?

breakfast smoothie here: frozen blueberries, frozen spinach, banana, yogurt, milk, oats, ground almonds water

ohbygolly · 05/07/2022 12:02

I'm not in the UK, but we have warning signs in supermarkets that imported frozen fruit should be boiled before consumption. Just googled now and apparently there have been 38 alerts across Europe between 2014 and 2020 for norovirus associated with frozen berries.
