Is anyone NOT paying as much for gas and electric as they thought?

I am aware that this issue is really affecting a lot of people and genuinely this is in no way a post to rub anything in. I'm concerned that something is wrong with the way provider is calculating what I'm using because my gas and electric doesn't seem to have gone up at all.

I am not on a fixed rate tariff. I'm with e.on who for ages recently were changing their system to e.on Next which meant I was unable to use their portal for a while or put in metre readings, I couldn't even use it to up my direct debit so was expecting when it finally finished that I'd be in a lot of debit with them as I'd just been paying the same as I always had prior to the April increase.

Anyway, the system move has been completed for a while now and I've been putting metre readings in and I'm still in a lot of credit on both electric and gas and I'm just a bit confused about it.

We live in a 3 bedroom with 3 kids and me and DH, I've been on maternity too so been home a lot and we were sort of bracing ourselves for a huge issue. We pay £70 a month for electric and £100 for gas, that's what we were paying prior to April and it appears it's still enough (I appreciate it'll go up again in Oct).

It just worries me that something has gone wrong when I see people talking about spending hundreds and hundreds every month. It seems like we're the only people who don't appear to have been massively affected by the increase and it's worrying me that they'll suddenly notice an error and go 'oops now you owe us hundreds'.

Is anyone else finding they aren't paying as much as they thought they would be after the April increase?

But have they actually raised a bill even though you’re inputting meter readings? With British Gas it doesn’t matter how often I put in meter readings they only raise a bill when it’s due for them to. They ‘take note’ and thank me for my readings but then I get an email saying they will want them again before my bill is due and so my dd doesn’t change until a bill is raised by them. Does that make sense with all my rambling?

With Octopus your balance updates immediately and you can make payments whenever. I put them in weekly and pay for what I've used as I go.

In the past week I've only used 46p of gas though so not expecting that to be sky high until end of November. Will use a low energy oil radiator in the living room throughout the month and October if needed. I do need to fill quite a few window gaps though this year as some of the double glazing doesn't sit entirely flush.

My electric DD has stayed the same but I've also had solar panels installed. Gas, who knows as not used the heating yet but I have an unused open fireplace in the living room which I'm going to get working for winter. Dreading the winter fuel bills

BanditBluey · 05/07/2022 15:34

Isn't the bill not going up just because it is compared to winter when we used loads, so in summer we use less, but the price is staying the same due to the increase. I'd say you need to up your payments yourself to prepare yourself for winter.
My direct debit was 131 per month combined. It has gone up to 202 per month, but usage is 90. We are paying a higher amount to help cover us for winter

BanditBluey · 05/07/2022 15:35

We were in credit and were given a £50 ish refund in June for some reason. Why didn't they just keep it to go towards winter I'm not sure

I compare to last year's usage. And the one before. I.... Keep track obsessively 😳 It's childhood issues from "Oooh, wouldn't want to pay heating in that castle" and "Do you think I grow money?! Turn that down. Why is light on in the other room? You will all ruin me once"😂

Ilikewinter · 05/07/2022 16:10

Just checked mine vs June last year and we've been billed for £20 more in electric and £10 more in gas.

SEJ1789 · 05/07/2022 16:26

we got asked to put the direct debit up to £140 a month but I refused (with bulb so on variable so can’t change) we currently use about £60 a month for both. They recently said we were in too much credit so sitting at £110 DD now. 2 adults 3 bed semi. Last year we paid about £50 a month but hadn’t got loads of credit built up

I should add we are currently £360 in credit which keeps going up. With the government grant if £400 hopefully the near £800 buffer should keep us pretty comfortable over the winter.

BordoisAgain · 05/07/2022 16:47

Our fixed rate ended in June so this is our first month on a higher rate.

We're previously spending £200 a month but have almost £300 credit. Got an email to say they are putting our DD up to £330 based on previous year 😬

Think I might get them to hold off on that as we are in a totally different position with restrictions ending

OhmygodDont · 05/07/2022 16:53

British Gas haven’t upped our dd but are recommending we up it by £60 a month however we recently moved to have no known usage here and at my last meter reading it was a are you sure that’s right… as it was lower than they expected. Sold the fish tank

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 05/07/2022 17:01

Just checked back and I was paying more this time last year...

LimpBiskit · 05/07/2022 17:12

I'm paying £600 a month for combined gas and electric. I'm not sure what I'm powering!

crazy4cats · 05/07/2022 17:20

yes I was really worried as we aren't on a tariff at the moment. went from £100 gad and electric combined to about £140. I thought it would double

Obviously still got October price rise to come but it's not as dire as I thought

hookiewookie29 · 05/07/2022 18:26

We have a pre payment meter and we're not putting any more on it than we were 12 months ago.

Thatboymum · 05/07/2022 18:55

It’s reassuring to read other octopus supplier posts as I’ve actually had them come out and check mine as it was concerning me so much my smart meter wasn’t rite , I’m a 4 bed semi detached well insulated new windows and doors and new top range boiler at Xmas with 4 occupants so I suspect that’s had an impact but my heating and electric is used an awful lot and my bill combined is £115 a month which is lower than it was the whole last year it’s so weird as I was expecting huge increase . My sister is with octopus too and is having same experience of great prices

alfagirl73 · 05/07/2022 19:19

I'm with Octopus and mine hasn't changed much. I'm on a variable tariff - my direct debit has remained the same. I did top up a bit before the increase and had a nice buffer - most of which is still there - just gone down a little bit. I'm going to top up a bit between now and winter to increase the buffer again - but so far it's all worked out not too bad. Mind you I turned my heating off before the increase - I've never been one for having the heating on one second longer than absolutely necessary and I won't turn it on until absolutely necessary either. But then I'm always warm and have never been one for having the heating on/turned up unless I'm really feeling the cold. So hoping that between my top ups etc... it'll see me through the winter.

Serenbunny · 05/07/2022 20:26

Only had a slight increase so far but looking on my account I am not building up as much credit over the summer like other years so I guess the increases will come over the winter.
