To worry about DD ‘reality shifting’?

divadiya · 04/07/2022 19:37

Hi.
Last week DD told me she was trying to reality shift, which, summed up is where she moves to different universes?! I thought she was joking and brushed it off. But then today she told me that last night she successfully went to a different universe, told me she went to hogwarts for a few hours. She told me she writes down where she wants to be and uses a reality shifting method. Now I’m a bit concerned about the possibility of mental health problems as she does believe this. She’s under CAMHS. Advice? Ta.

I was obsessed with astral projection around that age and convinced myself I would be able to do it if I tried hard enough.
I would spend ages trying at home and I know my mam was a bit WTF??

Got over it in the end when it turned out I was just napping.

beastlyslumber · 04/07/2022 21:24

There are worse tiktok fads she could be getting into - tourettes and trans are two that spring to mind. I would be a little bit concerned about what she's looking at online tbh. Encourage her to take up other interests, a sport or hobby that involves real life interaction and preferably something she can do outdoors.

It's just pathworking/self-guided meditation, it's nothing new, it's a way to relax at the end of a stressful day usually interspersed with a bit of self-discovery. It was very extensively outlined in A Witch Alone by Marian Green and that's at least 20 years old now. The fact you've jumped to all sorts of conclusions suggests she needs to decompress. Are you a very anxious person in general?
FWIW, delusions rarely take people to where they wanted to go.

@PeekabooAtTheZoo you imply that people should understand this, or at the very least know about it, which is absolutely not the case for people who are disinterested in witchcraft.

OP, as someone interested in witchcraft and all things metaphysical, as well as a background in children’s mental health, please do mention it to your CAMHS contact.

Theglowofcandles · 04/07/2022 21:43

I work in mental health. You post, at first, screamed out delusions to me. However, reading some of the comments I can see it's a tik tok trend. Giving that you dd is under camhs though I would definitely get in touch with them.

VestaTilley · 04/07/2022 21:57

Seek advice from CAMHS. It sounds odd for a 16 year old to be doing that, unless it’s just daydreaming- but if she thinks it’s really happening that is concerning.

Does she have access to screens/tablets in her bedroom? Maybe put a stop to that.

TheMullerLightOwl · 04/07/2022 22:29

This is basically just lucid dreaming but some tiktok accounts who subscribe to the multiverse theory call it reality shifting. It's harmless as long as she isn't spending a lot of time in the other "realities" to avoid her problems in our "reality".

ManateeFair · 04/07/2022 22:44

She’s just making a big deal out of something which is essentially just daydreaming or meditating. It’s basically a teenage woo craze. When I was a teenager all the girls at my school were into tarot and and love spells. I strongly doubt she genuinely believes that she is moving into a different universe, but she probably thinks it makes her seem incredibly cool.

I would add that imagining that you are somewhere really amazing or comforting or safe is a really common relaxation or anxiety management technique. I used to do it all the time when I was younger and I still do it now when I can’t sleep. The more detailed a picture you can conjure in your head, the better it is. My mum was told to try it when she was being treated for a life threatening illness.

Ladybug9 · 04/07/2022 22:51

This is really popular atm on TikTok. Loads of posts about what they thknk is quantum leaping etc, honestly I wouldn't worry it seems to be a new big thing people are talking about of a certain age range.

ShadowoftheFall · 04/07/2022 23:03

Gosh, I’ve been lucid dreaming for decades, and I’ve done astral projection courses. I had no idea I was so on trend! I hope you are able to find help and support for your DD, OP, but I agree with previous posts that t not new, and nothing more than developed relaxation, self-hypnosis daydreaming.

BadNomad · 04/07/2022 23:56

We were all doing that nonsense back in 1996 when The Craft came out.

Light as a feather
Stiff as a board

Anxiernie · 05/07/2022 00:05

Hmmm. I'm a grown adult and try to astral project. I think that's a bit different though, it doesn't include fictional worlds.

XenoBitch · 05/07/2022 00:10

It is a Tik Tok trend. Back in my day, it was astral projection, then lucid dreaming. It is all the same, just different names.
I don't think it is a MH issue unless it is negatively affecting her life in some way, be that being delusional, or neglecting basic things.

Fucking hell, I remember having a sleepover with some school friends, and we were 100% certain that this would work.
Oh how disappointed we were.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 05/07/2022 00:14

I practice active imagination. I am a fully compos mentis adult. I don't think you need worry about it!

Booklover3 · 05/07/2022 00:39

Nah. It’s basically meditation / dreaming state. I wouldn’t worry about this unless there is more that you haven’t mentioned?

seemsikeaniceday · 05/07/2022 00:41

This sounds a lot like maladaptive daydreaming.

MangyInseam · 05/07/2022 00:42

When my kids say this stuff I like to say "Oh, you mean like on tiktok" and they get embarrassed and leave off talking about it.

BlackTourmaline · 05/07/2022 00:43

This seems to be very popular with young people at the mo.

DaisyDreaming · 05/07/2022 01:10

People used to do that on tumblr. I remember reading about someone who shifted to Hogwarts for 2 years (apparently). I think it was called Tulpas or having a tulpa. Wasn’t classed as lucid dreaming. I didn’t do it. Was just a weird thing kids that age did.

Yes, tupla are "head mates".. it is basically people trying to invoke voices.

DaisyDreaming · 05/07/2022 01:48

Sorry I was confusing the head mates and the shifting to the other places, I wasn’t a tumblr person

milkysmum · 05/07/2022 01:54

It's a TikTok thing. Dd and her mates ( now 13/14) used to all twitter on about this last year. Some were more ' convincing' than others that they had ' shifted to hogwarts'.
It's nothing to worry about at all.
