To think you don’t take an under 2 to the cinema at night?

Went to watch Elvis tonight. Started at 19.30 and finished at nearly 10.30. Couple took a young child (under 2 years) in a push chair in. Didn’t pay for child ticket and child cried for large portions of the film - they didn’t even take her out of the film when crying. I can kind of believe some parents have very poor judgement but why did the cinema staff allow this?!

That's soo selfish of them. I wouldn't dream of it

Cantanka · 03/07/2022 22:49

Disgraceful. Sorry your film was disrupted OP.

I don’t think people should take babies to the cinema other than specified children’s performances. I know some people will say “oh but my baby never cries in the cinema” but that’s not a guarantee, and it takes a fair few seconds to get a crying baby out of there even if the parents react immediately to the baby getting fractious (which they usually don’t).

Did you ask the cinema staff why they allowed it? You'd have probably got a refund if you'd have complained.

TeapotTitties · 03/07/2022 22:54

That was very selfish of them but I would've nipped out and asked the staff to do something about it, rather than continue to let the noise spoil the film.

SherbertLemonDrop · 03/07/2022 22:56

You should have asked for a refund

JohnNutLips · 03/07/2022 22:56

I did but just got shrugs and “I didn’t serve them” 🤷‍♀️

What's that got to do with it?

The staff needed to ask one of them to go out with the child or for all of them to leave.

Did you ask them to do this? Not that you should have to, it's their job to do it anyway.

Valhalla17 · 03/07/2022 23:05

You should have gone out during the film and told the staff/asked them to remove or give you a refund.

I had similar at Top Gun, with a group of 5+ teens making sex noises ans generally being plonkers through the movie. Third time I was out to complain and there were at least 2 other customers already there complaining....the staff came in and asked them to leave.

Our place only allows “babes in arms” (under 18 months) morning and afternoon. Over that can go in anytime but needs a paying ticket. I’d never go in the evening or when it’s busy with a young one!

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 03/07/2022 23:12

I remember being disappointed that I missed “baby friendly” screenings by a few years, but I am damned if I stayed home with young children for years to have films now ruined by selfish gits and wailing children. I feel the same about pubs TBH.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 03/07/2022 23:18

Yanbu. Same goes for pubs, theatres and any other adult orientated space.

JohnNutLips · 03/07/2022 23:21

It was an Odeon Luxe - just looked up their policy and they allow babes in arms in to anything up to a 12a. I can’t believe they don’t restrict this to a cut off time of say 7pm.
Why isn’t the kid at home in bed?
glad it’s not just me who thinks it’s completely inappropriate.

Yanbu
Although I have taken an under two to the cinema at night but it was an outdoor cinema on holiday, so slightly different. I wheeled her in the buggy outside till she fell asleep and she slept through the entire thing. If she hadn't she would have been out of there!
Would not have risked it with an indoor cinema though

CuriousMama · 03/07/2022 23:35

Send an email complaint to head office. That's disgraceful.

Florenz · 04/07/2022 00:09

Cinemas really need to get their act together or they won't be around for much longer.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 04/07/2022 16:51

I agree @Florenz

It's becoming increasingly common that someone scrolls on their screen throughout the film, or chats incessantly or brings a baby/toddler that needs attention for the duration of the film.

Members of staff are never present any more.

I recall once , going to a screening when noxious fumes were entering the auditorium.
People legged it and all any member of staff ( that was available) could say was " Do you want a refund?"

These places are barely staffed and , apparently, films are controlled remotely!!! Staff have no control.
