What is with all the "look at us all having a lovely lunch/drinks party/holiday abroad/trip to Ascot/Wimbledon blah blah blah"

Do brands really think that watching other people having a lovely freebie time will get us plebs rushing to pay full whack for their stuff?
Is that really going to drive up sales as we head into fricking recession?

I don't really mind being shown stuff by the Insta lot in their bedrooms or flouncing about next to their nearest wall. I get to see what clothes look like on different shapes etc etc

But seriously - seeing "the beautiful people" all rolling about laughing and having a fabulous time to "launch a new product" or "celebrate" such and such brand feels so "them & us" - AIBU?

Yes YABU - you jealous fool
No YANBU - there is something a bit weird in promoting a brand by having an exclusive event which only a small special group are invited - exclusionary?

Got to love to hate a few influencers. My pet peeve is when they say something along the lines of ‘Brand work coming up. Thanks for engaging with these posts. It allows me to be here producing this content for you all’. As if they’re doing you a bloody favour.

Ugh, yes. And ‘I’ve managed to get you guys a discount’… it’s an AF link for credits!! All brought to you when they ‘just jump on’ from their Boss Babe office in the corner of the spare room

Just stop looking. They only carry on because they have an audience.

This. I hate influencer culture, so I don't follow any, read their content, or click on their posts.

The thing I hate about influencer content that it's an advert, but wrapped up in a veil of fake 'friendship'.

The influencers who are successful make it because they manage to manipulate gullible people into thinking that they are relatable, that they have things in common, that there is something almost mutual there. It's sickeningly cynical and manipulative.

But you clearly follow them. 🤷‍♀️

You are part of how they get their income.

Delete insta. Waste of time.

I find it so depressing. I’m not on social media so I don’t follow any influencers but it bothers me that it’s a thing. Someone said to me it’s no different to working in advertising but it is different because you’re not working on behalf of a company. You ARE the advert.

this is quite interesting and I haven’t thought about it this way, it’s the direction most brands are copying for sure , and it’s starting to get more and more elaborate, overnight stays at exclusive boutique hotels spas and such , the influencers get gifted, Without the need to be loyal to the brand. and it seems it makes more and more influencers wanting to get into that exclusive circle by acting genuine "this is not a paid ad but I so love this product , , blah blah ,

it’s a quite clever move all around by the brand , more free publicity for an event that probably cost peanuts in comparison to the free publicity!

Yeah my sister gets sent stuff for her house sometimes due to her following on Instagram. It’s actually quite cringey watching her promoting it on her IG videos and makes me want to throw up.

Like this 🤮 🤮

AyeUpMeDuck · 05/07/2022 06:58

I've accepted that Instagram and all that bollocks isn't made for me.
It's made for talentless people that aspire to be famous for nothing and for those who want to get handed cash for simply pointing a camera at themselves.
Imo, It's a warped world view that puts fakeness above all else and it's best avoided.

It’s such a shame when places start using influencers. There is a hotel I like to go to but recently it has been full of pr stays and influencers, so much that I won’t be booking another stay.

123Callie · 05/07/2022 08:38

I was on holiday recently at a newly opened hotel and they had about 20 influencers there from all over Europe. They all had small follower numbers and were travelling alone to this ‘pr event’ which meant they had special things organised for them at the hotel like yoga classes, meals and trips to local attractions.

It really annoyed me. They were getting drunk, regaling each other with stories over breakfast, a group behaved badly in the indoor pool and it had to be shut for 2 days. Must have been them as everyone else there was a couple or young family. It was a pretty small hotel.

This is the only media thing I use
No interest at all in mebook twatter insta
Not interested in other peoples lives other than those i love

Nope, I unfollow anyone who does ad’s or AF links. Life is all the better for it. These people do not add anything to society.

DashboardConfessional · 05/07/2022 10:40

You don't need to follow them to see them. Instagram suggests people my friends follow to me, in amongst my friends' posts. This is how I'm scrolling through my feed and then suddenly I'm confronted with Mrs Hinch's kids in #ad kindly gifted M&S.
