To ask for career advice (teaching)

ISaidHeyWhatsGoingOn · 03/07/2022 15:42

Can I ask what do I need to do if I wanted to pursue a career in teaching. I have a degree (business and economics) but don't have other qualifications (A levels) which I think I need? I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Think you need a degree + gcse English (and maybe maths, depending on subject). But don’t worry about quals they’re so desperate for teachers there’s many ways to work around it or get them as you go along. Main thing is to ask yourself “do I want to put up with endless shit on a daily basis from both my students and colleagues above me?”

Universities will state their entry requirements on their website.
Many require GCSE grade C or above and a second or first class degree (If going down PGCE route).

I would research where you would like to study first and look at their entry requirements.

You can look at apprenticeship routes too, no requirement to go to university and you will be working at the same time as studying www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/teacher-v1-0

I would recommend speaking to a qualified careers adviser, they will be able to give you guidance nationalcareers.service.gov.uk

Universities will have their entry requirements on the course prospectus for PGCE. Generally 2.1/2.2 degree plus GCSE English and maths at C or above.

There are non degree routes like teach first or SCITT but they're often more competitive.

I'm assuming you mean primary too?

Have you got any classroom experience yet? Which route you take you'll need as much experience as you can get your hands on

Good advice from Jetadore. I’d add endless shit from the govt too. Please have a look at the Facebook site ‘Life After Teaching - Exit the Classroom and Thrive’ just so you really know what to expect. There is a reason teachers are leaving in droves. There’s also a thread on here about the crisis of the teacher shortage. That makes an illuminating read too.

In my last school we had a good and reasonable head, smaller than average KS1 classes and still the workload was overwhelming with a great deal of it being pointless but necessary to satisfy Ofsted. When my own child was asked if he wanted to be a teacher he said ‘What and work all the time like mum does?’

getintoteaching.education.gov.uk

you don’t need A-Levels necessarily, but you need GCSE or equivalent at grade 4/C or above in English and maths, and science if you want to teach primary.

Teaching what age group? What subject?
