Second hand toys as gifts?

I have 3 children and almost all their toys are second hand, great quality, expensive toys for a fraction of the cost. I love finding a bargain & new toys IMO are almost always over priced.

The problem is, I find it very difficult to then go and buy brand new for friends/families children for birthdays. But up till now I have had to because I feel like I’ll be judged otherwise!

It is genuinely not just a money thing, of course we all know it’s better for the environment to not buy new as well. But also, I feel like I can get the child more/better quality toys if they’re pre-loved.

One of the children in the family is turning 3 soon and they love peppa pig. I could get them 3/4 sets they love second hand or just 1 brand new. Once it’s out the box in 5 seconds flat what’s the difference really?

But AIBU? Will their parents call me a tight arse?!
😂

It's not something I would do. I give away our used stuff to anyone who wants or needs it but not as their birthday gift.

I honestly wouldn't care if someone gave one of my DC a secondhand toy for a gift. I'd want it to be clean, that's about it.

I hate the thought of people stressing about spending money on a gift - homemade card and a bag of sweets is fine. I wouldn't get 3/4 sets of anything though - one is fine.

I gave my son our old lounge furniture and he was really pleased with it. He has gone far away to live and he said it made him feel more at home in his new house. I have bought a Duplo farm and zoo that were second hand and put them through dishwasher and they are perfect. I gave them to my GC. My dd could not believe they were not new. I usually give friends children a voucher so they can get what they want.

I have bought both new & second hand for my kids for gifts. I've been gifted second hand by family & been happy with it! Who are you buying for? Good friends, family or both? What sort of things do they buy for their kids? If all new bare in mind some people are bad at looking for & finding bargains.
I'd be surprised if most people weren't happy with whatever you give them.

I'm always amazed by people who say they've had great condition second hand stuff. I've tried really hard to buy second hand and its always had stuff wrong with it, missing bits, looks really shabby when you actually see it alongside a newer toy, battery powered functions no longer work etc.

Duplo and brio do tend to be in good nick as they last well but theres hardly any ever sold and when it is, its not cheap!

@InChocolateWeTrust charity shops can be a bit hit and miss but fb marketplace is great for good condition second hand toys. (& other stuff!)

I would and do buy second hand things for myself, but I would not buy second hand as a gift. I would also be taken aback if somebody got me something second hand as a gift, unless it was a rare book or an antique clock or whatever.

I also don’t think I would appreciate three lots of peppa pig rather than one (whether second hand or not) because of the additional stuff and space required.

Caspianberg · 02/07/2022 08:43

Yes I would prefer

For those peppa pig sets for a 3 year old I would love if someone bought some secondhand, washed, and put in a nice storage basket with lid and gifted.
That way it’s ready to play with, no package and I don’t have to find where it’s going to be kept after.

I would never give anything second hand as a gift for a birthday etc.

Passing on things to friends that we're finished with? Yes absolutely. Wrapped up as a present? No no.
