To ask about urine infections

I have never suffered from UTIs until now.

I had one a couple of weeks ago and was prescribed a week long course of co-amoxiclav. I felt like it shifted and then suddenly came back and I’m take a 3 day course of trimeprothim. Tomorrow is the last day. I thought it was shifting it and now the pain in my stomach is back and I’m peeing every 5 min.

has anyone had this before and what was the outcome? They’ve sent my urine sample off and I’ll hopefully hear back on Monday but the nurse said to me that when she checked the sample there was only traces of blood and protein and if there was an infection it was very mild.

im anxious by my very nature and this is making it worse.

Has anyone had this?

Try not to worry. I’ve had several stubborn UTI’s that have taken several course of antibiotics.

OneEyedPenguin · 01/07/2022 21:56

Dh recently had the same thing happen to him. It cleared up after the second lot of antibiotics.

whoamitodisabrie · 01/07/2022 21:57

Ah thank you for getting back to me. If I’m the same tomorrow and Sunday I’ll make another appointment.

my god they’re pretty painful!

They really are awful, you have my sympathy

Grosscostsagreed · 01/07/2022 22:01

You need to make sure it has clearer so it doesn't become imbedded. Urine culture's and diosticka are inaccurate. The NHS website even says this. They should be treating symptoms. If you struggle to get treatment look at being seen by Dr Malone-Lees team who treat this.

DieSchottin93 · 01/07/2022 22:08

Last time this happened to me it was because the particular bacteria that caused it that time was resistant not trimethroprim so once my sample had been tested at the lab I got a prescription for a different antibiotic and that cleared it up 👍

PortalooSunset · 01/07/2022 22:11

I have a condition called interstitial cystitis, flare ups of which feel like UTI but there's no actual infection. If it persists it would be worth you requesting a referral to urology. Apparently common in menopausal ladies.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 01/07/2022 22:13

I’ve been a chronic sufferer of UTIs on and off since I was about 16 and they can be stubborn. I will say though that I have sometimes had UTIs that have been vastly exacerbate by a nasty dose of thrush. Might be worth treating for that with the internal tablet, cream and the oral Fluconazole to see if it helps.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2022 22:17

I don’t think they give people a long enough period of being on antibiotics to always clear it up. If you are still getting symptoms make sure you ask for a longer course of antibiotics

whoamitodisabrie · 01/07/2022 22:19

@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ that’s something I’ll need to do.

TMI but I’m a bit irritated down there (but not itchy) and I’m wondering if the coamoxiclav had caused me to lose good bacteria.

@PortalooSunset how do you treat the cystitis?

OP posts:
Smogtopia · 01/07/2022 22:20

Try D Mannose!!

Chocolatefrenzy · 01/07/2022 22:23

You definitely need the culture and sensitivity result back to make sure you're on the right antibiotics. In the meantime drink plenty of water, cranberry juice is good also

abw94 · 01/07/2022 22:27

I had this and it turned out I was actually pregnant.. might be worth checking?

TheVolturi · 01/07/2022 22:32

Op get some buscopan. You can buy in anywhere now even supermarkets and b&m etc. It will say for ibs but I was given it for cystitis, it stops thy urge to pee and helps everything calm down.

whoamitodisabrie · 01/07/2022 22:57

@abw94 definitely not pregnant. Just had my period

Just be weary that antibiotics can cause thrush! In fact, every time I have antibiotics I treat for thrush too because I'm extremely prone to it anyway.
I hope you're ok. Anything down there is just awful :(

whoamitodisabrie · 02/07/2022 23:54

Just finished the antibiotics and still don’t feel right.

when I lie on my front it feels like my lower stomach is swollen. I’m absolutely not pregnant but it’s the same feeling you get in early pregnancy.

what is wrong with me? 😭😭

Ask for fluconazole for thrush and a further course of the right antibiotics from a culture.

couldnyou be peri? I was having hideous UTIs and my urologist put me on HRT and the oestrogen made the bladder a bit more elastic and sorted things out.

Weenurse · 03/07/2022 00:17

Suggest repeat urine test to check for infection. ( Once off antibiotics for a few days)
If no infection, then ask for urology referral to check for interstitial cystitis.

SkeletonFight · 03/07/2022 00:22

I have had Trimethoprim for UTIs and it wasn't the best at shifting it. Nitrofuratoin is the one that seems to do it for me. Like someone else has mentioned it can be an age related thing. I had a hysterectomy a few years back and had about 7 in the following year. Since then it's been better but a couple recently. I'm now on Vagifem to support the whole genitourinary area.

Derekscardigan · 03/07/2022 00:29

Just seconding the suggestion to try D-Mannose, both me and my DM suffered with recurrent UTI's and have had brilliant results with it.,The worst I ever get now is just the first signs of one starting, I take one dose and it's gone within a couple of hours, only happens once in a blue moon too.

DianaBarry5 · 03/07/2022 00:40

A physio suggested D Mannose to me and I haven't had one since I started using it. I buy it on Amazon and it gets rid of E. coli type infections if that's what you have. I just take one a day ... it's really effective

Roselilly36 · 03/07/2022 02:27

It’s awful, I was constantly having UTI, fairly common with my disability, my MS nurse suggested me trying D-Mannose supplement. Totally solved my infections. I take one tablet a day, and it keeps it in check. I found trimethoprim effective, but I had to take it for a minimum of 5 days for the infection to fully clear. Unfortunately though, some bugs (if e-coli based infection) stay in the bladder wall and then start to multiply again, the d mannose sticks to the bugs and flushes them out when you wee. It’s just a fruit sugar. Would recommend trying it, you can buy it in health stores or Amazon (cheaper) as tablets or powder that you can add to drinks. Good luck OP, I hope it clears soon for you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this information. I never knew this, you are now my most favourite human being. I have some in the house so will take one, perhaps I will get more than two hours sleep without having to dash to the loo!

georgarina · 03/07/2022 05:49

I used to get UTI's all the time especially in pregnancy. You should start feeling relief within one/two days otherwise it's a sign you need a different antibiotic. Trimethoprim in general is quite a weak one I think and has never worked for me. Just call them back and say your symptoms have gotten worse, you're in pain, and you need another AB.

And just a note on D mannose - in my experience it's better at prevention than treatment. It's never treated a UTI for me even if I've taken it as soon as I've felt symptoms - but it's worked when I've used it as a preventative.
