Aibu to wonder how you're occupying your primary aged children or how they will be spending the summer holidays?

OP posts:
Lazypuppy · 01/07/2022 19:22

I won't be 'occupying them'.

We will probably plan 1 main activity a week, but rest of time is just at home with toys, garden,tv etc. Probably arrange a few play dates but we'll have lots of time at home, they have plenty to play with to entertain themselves. We have lota of bits to do around the house to get done

Cuddlywuddlies · 01/07/2022 19:31

We are currently on holiday for 2 weeks, the rest of the summer is a mix of summer camps, time at their grandparents,a week camping, a week in the U.K. (we live in Ireland),then at the weekends there’s the zoo planned , an adventure park, a water park and a family celebration one weekend also. Busy busy busy…

MiniCooperLover · 01/07/2022 19:33

There's going to have to be camp at least 3 days a week and I'll let him do what he likes tech wise the other two. I work from home 45 hrs a week so won't be able to do much with him sadly and DH will be working too. Tech is his lifeline to his friends as an only. We ha E a 2 week family holiday too: he's 11.

TokyoSushi · 01/07/2022 19:36

10 nights in Greece, one overnight per week with grandparents (they love it and are totally spoilt) other than that just chilling, seeing friends etc. I WFH but they're older primary so fine to occupy themselves for a while.

neverbeenskiing · 01/07/2022 19:43

I have a 3yo and an 8 yo. We're going to Spain for a week straight after school breaks up. They will be tired when we get back so will probably be happy to spend a few days chilling at home, playing in the garden, going to the local park etc. We will also visit Grandparents, see friends, organise a couple of playdates and have some nice days out. The 8 year old does get bored and miss the structure of school so we've booked her onto a 5 day drama workshop in August that she's really excited about. But I think it's important that children learn to amuse themselves so I will not be providing constant entertainment, there will be plenty of time chilling or playing at home too.

HairyScaryMonster · 01/07/2022 19:51

2 week holiday and otherwise 3 days at holiday club and splitting the other days as leave between DH and I.

elQuintoConyo · 01/07/2022 20:11

I'm in Spain, we broke up on 22nd June.

So far DD has done 1 week of tennis/padel camp. Next week and week after multisport, then a week of pool camp. She only goes 9-1.

I work mornings, DH WFH. Then we're off camping in the mountains for a cheapy week, and August we'll visit a friend with a pool 😃

We have no family to help. Luckily we're near the beach, so if we're bored or using too many electrics, that's where we head. Organising playdates and sleepovers, too.

We calculated 74 days of summer holiday 😮

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 01/07/2022 20:19

Week 1 we're off for a U.K. break.

Weeks 2,3,4,5,6 DD (8yo) will be at holiday club 4 days a week and with family for the other day while we work. It's a great club but costs a fucking fortune, she'll do climbing, kayaking, bushcraft, archery, team building stuff and me and DH will work.

Week 7 I'm off work and we'll do a couple of local activities and get all the back to school shopping done.

Autienotnaughtie · 01/07/2022 20:24

My ds is autistic and needs lots of attention we do something everyday usually a week looks something like this-

Mon - park
Tue - day trip to beach/museum
We'd- see friends
Thurs- childcare
Fri - see family

We do lots of parks, sometimes soft play , museums, beach or trampoling. Meet up with friends or cousins, visit grandparents. Days out with the kids is a great site for ideas. .

CeeJay81 · 01/07/2022 20:34

I wish I knew lol. Its so expensive to go away in the Summer holidays. It'll be odd play dates, park, swimming and other activities that the leisure centre put on. There will be a few bigger days out but we haven't got a big budget. My brother is visiting for a weekend but that's about it.

Wales are off for over 7 weeks!! Thankfully there is talk about having much shorter summer holidays in future and extending other half terms here.

Provenceinthesummer · 01/07/2022 20:44

Beach days - surfing, paddle boarding and hiking
camping in the garden and in the mountains
2 week holiday
sleepovers with friends planned mid way
outdoor cinema booked
theatre visit booked
Harry Potter tour
museum visit in London x 3 days - special deal
gardening - veg patch
building dens
baking
time with gp
play dates ad hoc

i can’t wait!! Love the holidays. No one is allowed to wake me up before 9am!

JustSaying101 · 01/07/2022 20:50

We've got a week holiday booked during the holidays and I'll be working during some of it. Will probably do a a few day trips too - theme park, zoo, musuem, etc and meet with family and some friends. Fingers crossed the weather behaves itself...

Sprogonthetyne · 01/07/2022 21:05

We've got annual passes for 4 local places (zoo, farm, aquarium & museum) and live within driving distance of a beach, park and woodland, so probably those on rotation. Will also do some visits to grandparents and hopefully summer reading challenge at the library.

TonightIamgointobe · 01/07/2022 21:07

The garden.

FreezyFreezy · 01/07/2022 21:29

We have no money so we will simply let them play out with friends or let them stay in and watch TV.

Bunce1 · 01/07/2022 21:30

Theatre and sport camp for a week each respectively.

3 weeks in France

1 weekend camping

Beach days. Lazy days.

cadburyegg · 01/07/2022 21:41

Single parent here. First 2 weeks they are at holiday camp. I'm then on annual leave for 2 weeks and we are going on holiday for the first week then visiting family on the second. Last 2 weeks their dad is having them. There will be some spare days and weekends etc where we can go on days out (primarily paid for with Tesco vouchers!) or chilling and having play dates etc. I like to keep busy in the summer

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/07/2022 21:59

I have one 8 year old DS. I am very lucky to have the holidays at home with him. We are not going away this summer as we did a week at Easter and are away at Oct half term.

So, we are planning a day trip somewhere each week e.g. Chatsworth or Zoo.

Other days we will do things locally e.g. walks/park/swimming/ice cream place. I will book a week of extra swimming lessons which he loves. See family friends.

Things at home like lego projects, baking etc.

I can't wait- 3 weeks to go!

ManateeFair · 01/07/2022 22:18

When I was a kid I used to feel genuinely sorry for the children whose parents filled their summer holidays with organised activities. I would have hated that. We used to go on holiday for a week and that was great, and then the rest of the time I just occupied myself and maybe knocked for a friend to see if they wanted to play out. Maybe went for a walk into town and a milkshake with my mum. I had friends whose parents signed them up for week-long activity camps and stuff and I was always appalled.

Friendship101 · 01/07/2022 22:19

2 weeks on holiday, 1 week at Grandparents, the other 3 weeks are split between holiday clubs and other grandparents and I also only work part time.

BobbieWaterbury · 01/07/2022 22:25

Weeks 1-3 DD in a cheap community playscheme (if dry they’re in our local park with scooters etc all day), £5 per child per day 930-3, so total bargain. DS will join her for 2 days a week but at 11, he is out and about on his own and meeting friends so didn’t want to go every day.
weeks 4-5 Greece
weeks 6-7 chilling, sorting school uniform, parks, beach etc.

elliejjtiny · 01/07/2022 22:41

I'm dreading it. Normally we would be doing watersports, park, beach and making the most of our NT membership. Maybe a day out to the zoo with tesco vouchers. However my 9 year old has to have casts on his legs for the whole summer holidays. My younger 3 (aged 8, 9 and 11) need to be out and about for at least 3 hours a day if I want them to fall asleep before 11pm so no idea how I'm going to keep them all occupied.

Asuume that you are abroad or independent schools?
We've only 45 days and I feel hard done by!

Our days are so easily filled. We have a break away, lots of free cheap activities booked. Play dates etc. But also lots of the beach, woods etc.

And have already written a holidays activities wish list!

TheVillageElder · 02/07/2022 15:24

@elQuintoConyo
