To leave a toxic job? Do I have to give notice?

I've been in a job for two months where, to keep things brief, I have been treated like shit and there are some really horrible people. None of the departments seem to work together and other staff get angry when they have to do their jobs! Something has happened today that's really upset me.

I have a couple of mental health conditions anyway, but my mental health has been good for the last few years, however this job has flared up my anxiety and issues in a way that they haven't flared up in over 15 years.

WIBU to leave? Also, I'm still in probation so only need to work a week's notice but I'm in such a state today I don't think I could even work that. Do I have to work it?

Well you could hand in your notice and self certify sick for the last five days. Provided you are happy to burn bridges. Life’s too short to stay in a shit job.

Junglejanie · 01/07/2022 16:47

Hand your notice in then go off sick..you don't need a doctors note for a week. Sounds like it's horrendous.

I literally can't stop crying since I got home. I haven't felt like this in years

how will you manage financially with no job? have you got something else lined up?

WombleFan1 · 01/07/2022 17:03

We don't need me to work financially

I was in the exact same position a few years ago. I was so excited to start a new job but walked in to the most toxic environment. They all openly disliked each other and the manager seemed to think it was ok to scream at a staff member for a minor mistake. Then came the racist jokes and fat shaming….I promptly went to HR and told them I wouldn’t be coming back. Turns out it wasn’t the first time HR had such complaints. Best decision I ever made. Life is too short for terrible jobs. Best of luck !

I left my last job and got signed off sick so I didn't have to work notice after they made my life difficult for having a hearing loss

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/07/2022 17:56

Hand in notice and tell them you are unwell at and will be off sick at the same time.

No need to go back.

RachelGreep87 · 01/07/2022 21:33

Get out, it is not worth it. The longer you stay the more effect it will have on you.

confusde · 01/07/2022 21:35

I would leave! Hand in your notice and go off as sick. Life is way too short to be miserable in a job you don’t need.

I would just use your previous employer as a reference and say you went travelling for a few months and now want to return to the workforce in future interviews.

Do you want to share what happened? Just to get it off your chest, I mean, for others to empathise.

Definitely jack it in!

Steelesauce · 01/07/2022 22:37

I walked out of a job after 2 months. Best thing I ever did. No regrets. Just do it!

KurriKawari · 01/07/2022 22:44

I worked in an awful awful place and left at lunch time and never went back.

Campervangirl · 01/07/2022 22:54

Yep, just don't go back, send them an email "apologies, the role is not what I expected and I won't be returning to work"
Then leave this job off of your cv.
I know what it feels like so you have my sympathy 💐
