To ask for your (tech?/old school )solutions to this teen safety issue?

How do you make your details/ contact number accessible on a teen/ young person in the event they are found intoxicated or unwell , and alone. You’d hope an ambulance would be first at the scene but it can take hours? They easily become separated from friends after drinking, and friends often leave them. Particularly if drugs are involved. Drink spiking is a real issue for young people right now, so education about the risks of alcohol etc is not enough. How do you solve the problem? I’m sure no young person wants to wear a wrist band with their parents number on but seriously, is there a setting on phones or similar that would allow a bystander to access emergency contacts in an emergency, and override any of their privacy settings? Have their been any campaigns to raise awareness or suggest solutions to this?

There is an emergency contact section on my phone, populated via settings I think. It can be accessed without unlocking the phone.

RoseAndRose · 01/07/2022 10:45

You use the ICE function

What sort of phone is it? Google that + ICE and you'll find out how to set it up.

Obvs won't help if they lose their phone or it gets nicked.

SpikeyHatePotato · 01/07/2022 10:45

on the iPhone there is the option to record your medical info and assign emergency contact to a number. You can access this from a locked phone by tapping on the emergency bit.

not sure if other phones have something similar?

Atomicspider · 01/07/2022 10:46

That’s interesting @BarbedButterfly .
which phone do you have?

MagpiePi · 01/07/2022 10:46

They can set up an ICE (In Case of Emergency) number on their phone. I don't know about androids but on iphones it is accessible from the lock screen.

Marvellousmadness · 01/07/2022 10:46

A wristband with their parents number on it 🤣🤣 id love to see that on a teen 😂😂

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 01/07/2022 10:47

There is on iPhone you can access emergency contacts without being able to unlock the phone.

Atomicspider · 01/07/2022 10:47

Ok brilliant to know iPhones have this

BarbedButterfly · 01/07/2022 10:47

Sorry, mine is a Samsung s10. I just googled how to do it as I remember it being easier to find on my iPhone

SpikeyHatePotato · 01/07/2022 10:49

What it looks like on the iPhone .
there is also a screen where is shows your blood type, allergies, medications- but I’m can’t screenshot that, obvs!

I'd question whether your teens' friends are really friends if they would leave them when intoxicated.
I was somewhat happier knowing that both of my teen sons had friends that looked after each other, even if it meant one of them cutting short the evening to take someone home in a taxi.

And now both my sons are grown up and have spilled the beans, I am glad I didn't know at the time what they got up to on nights out!

Atomicspider · 01/07/2022 10:53

That’s interesting. Would it occur to everyone to look for this if they found a person in this position?

You can do it on Android too. Search emergency in settings to set it up. They can call your emergency contacts without unlocking your phone.

SpikeyHatePotato · 01/07/2022 10:56

Knowing my phone has it, I would check someone else’s, but I wouldn’t expect my kids to know unless I’d shown them first.

Atomicspider · 01/07/2022 11:02

@MagpiePi not my kids but having attended a few of these situations in the last year (all had locked phones) I think perhaps I’ve been naïve thinking their friends will look after them in this scenario. With all the new (cheap/ lethal) new fangled street drugs that are out there right now , all the spikings, and the massive problems with ambulances, I’m rethinking safety measures for my own family.

An old school card in their wallet / purse. However if the phone and purse are stolen then there are allergy info wristbands available. Not 'cool' for a teenager but for someone with severe allergies may be a lifesaver.

Atomicspider · 01/07/2022 11:15

I think an old school card is probably more likely to be accessed by bystanders. I guess it depends on the generation

If your child has a severe medical condition they should have a bracelet/necklace with a medical tag. Nowadays you can get them looking like proper jewellery and not dog tags.

ICE function is good and DD also has one of DH's business cards with my mobil added to it in each of her purse/back pack/handbag.

Dodolovesme · 01/07/2022 11:37

when we were little my dad used to write his phone number on our arms with a biro in case we got lost... 😂

Dodolovesme · 01/07/2022 11:37

but more seriously, the emergency numbers on phone is a good suggestion, or a card in wallet

Sprogonthetyne · 01/07/2022 11:46

I have my phone number on sew in name labels, which I put in DS's (5) coat. It's multi purpos in case the coat gets left in the park but have told DS if he ever gets lost he can ask a shop assistant/ someone in a uniform to call me. Not sure if a teenager would go along with that, it's not overly noticeable, and they could alway tell peers it's just in case they loose the coat/bag.

Namenic · 01/07/2022 11:52

I don’t have a teen, but we have find friends on iPhone. Doesn’t work if they lose phone or it is stolen though.

PoisonedIvydaffs · 01/07/2022 12:06

My DD has my phone number on a sticker in the inside flap of her phone case (to use in the event of a flat battery).
