Does the way someone 'reads' have an effect on how you read their story?

I often find myself reading people's stories on here with different accents, or with different voices. Sometimes I think its a woman writing and then they say they are a man and I get a little shock, have to re read in their 'voice'.

just read a thread by a gay man and read his post as Ste from Holly oaks. haven't watched hollyoaks in 10 years! I also thi k if people use !!! exclamation points, them they are being cute. I don't know why. Not shouting or aggressive.

Does anyone else have any funny ways they read these?

Also if they swear in their post they 'talk faster' but if they don't they speak dainty. Like a little lady holding a tiny China teacup. I don't know why!

Yup, the way you write has a big impact on how people perceive you. Which is why spelling/grammar is actually so important!

People who do long rambling paragraphs with no punctuation are more likely to be treated harshly in the thread or voted YABU in my experience, because people perceive them to be confused/stupid/unreliable.

I can’t say I read posts in certain accents though!

I read everything in the same "voice". Never thought about accents or gender. This is really interesting!

ChagSameachDoreen · 01/07/2022 07:26

If a post is written in a clumsy or badly structured way, I click off. Likewise spelling and grammar mistakes. I know it isn't supposed to matter, but it absolutely does. If a post doesn't flow or doesn't make sense, I just don't bother.

When I read posts that talk about “baby” instead of “the baby” I automatically do it in a mimsy, wet lettuce voice.

Needs verbed instead of needs to be verbed gets a Scottish accent.

Anything with a massive salary mentioned or bifold doors gets a “west London, blonde hair tossing Tory” voice.

Big long paragraphs with no gaps and terrible spelling and grammar get a whiney voice, if I can be bothered to read them.

That's very interesting that you read it in different accents. My internal reading voice is always my own voice but I visualise in my head what they look like and build a picture based on how it's written, words used etc

I often read them in American accents (usually the ones I think are being ridiculous).

DecimatedDreams · 01/07/2022 08:02

I don't read posts in accents, but I do make a lot of judgements through the way posters write. Some posters would scare me in life, they are very abrupt and I know we wouldn't be friends. Posters who use the Blush emoji always make me think they are very sad and lonely. Some posters sound very loud in the way they write. I always think those posters have very big arms and wear polo shirts.

I absolutely can't bear anyone who uses American terms or spells words the American way - even though I know many of these terms have crept into our culture:
Diaper, Stroller, Pacifier, Mom, Neighbor (as opposed to Neighbour) etc, etc..

I know that many users are American, but it still irritates me! Annoys me even more when it becomes clear the OP is British 😑

@DecimatedDreams that's so interesting that you 'see' them
I love the parking ones (don't drive or even have a drive) because I love to picture their house.
I also have 2 'homes' I picture the ladies in. for some reason they're always sat in the kitchen (probably drinking tea like we are having a cuppa chatting about their mil or dh or something) as if I were there on the other chair. I do tend to see myself in books though, if I relate to a character I am them and see through their eyes. if I don't I'm with them watching them. Probably find it harder to relate to the people on here with cleaners and multiple cars, holidays etc.

I suppose with accents there are give aways- bairn (Scottish), tube (london), trash (American), 'we are not in uk' (puss in boots voice), mentioning fields mixes from Yorkshire to posh farmer 'oh we have horses and hundreds of millions in assets don't you know' this is the poshest voice imaginable!

I do hate it when I think a poster is a woman and then it turns out they're male. you can usually tell before they say it
