Blocked ear - anyone used specsavers or boots

Doctors no longer deal with wax removal, so has anyone used Specsavers or Boots?

AIBU to ask your experiences?

It's only one ear, is it worth getting both ears looked at, at the same time?

The nurse wouldn't do mine years ago , it can damage the ear drum she said.
The doctor didn't recommend it either , just days use the drops etc

I came here to recommend the endoscope too. I have tiny ear canals which block up monthly with wax. Used to go to an audiologist but it was getting expensive. The endoscope tool is amazing.

Update

Put the drops in for just over a week, went to specsavers in the end.

Right ear completely blocked, left ear fine.

I can now hear clearly in my right ear, I should've had it done much sooner, the relief is immense.

Thanks everyone.

Yep, microsuction is better than sex! I LOVE my annual appointment.

ChinBristles · 09/07/2022 16:48

I also love looking at the picture/video of inside my ear on the screen as they do it. you can see the blockage then the lovely pink ear tube afterwards.
I sometimes watch the videos on youtube as well.

Is there an age limit? My dd seems to have excessively waxy ears I would be interested to see what they can get out but I would not want to mess up her ear balance. 14.

I don't know, but I had to sign to say I understood the possible issues, which whilst I'm happy to sign for me, I may not for my child.

@tomatopsste yeah my place keeps photo records so you can compare your ear wax photos over time. I also have photos of my lumps next to coins once extracted. The first time was the best time tho! (mmmmmmm!!!)

ChinBristles · 09/07/2022 17:20

@Summerwhereareyou my understanding is that microsuction is extremely safe. They put a camera in first to check it's safe to proceed. Syringing or using cotton buds are not safe so if DD is tempted to pick at her own ears, defo a good thing to take her for an appt instead.

BlueStarfish · 09/07/2022 17:31

This thread is beyond funny! If I didn't know this was about earwax I'd have thought it was about a dildo!

Hohofortherobbers · 09/07/2022 17:44

My dh has his done always before our annual holiday by an independent, £50 for both. Years ago on holiday he had problem wax then the whole water in the ears thing, poked around a bit and got totally blocked. We ended up at the resort medics who suctioned out a chunk of wax, I kid you not, the size, colour and shape of a cigarette butt!!!! Oooooh, I'm a sporner and I wish I'd photographed it for you!!

Howdoidoit100 · 09/07/2022 17:48

I also bought a kit off amazon, worked like a dream

RandomMess · 09/07/2022 17:48

My DD had hers done first the time aged 9/10 didn't need doing again until She was 14ish.

DillonPanthersFNL · 09/07/2022 18:04

My ears got blocked over lock down and I may or may not have used the water flosser for my teeth to blast the wax out. Home ear syringing! However I am trained in it

WafflyVersatileOohOoh · 09/07/2022 18:05

Can someone explain how you use the endoscope, please?

I get that you can see via the camera, but does the tool at the end of the probe remove the wax by just moving it or how does it work?

Blowthemandown · 11/07/2022 19:40

Syringed partners’ ears myself but would steer clear of sticking any of the crazy removal tools in. It’s easy to press the wax further in/damage your ear drum.

It’s got different shaped scoop attachments and you can see the wax and hook it out. I wouldn’t use if if your hand/eye coordination isn’t very good as it is a bit tricky to get the hang of.

PaperTyger · 12/07/2022 20:02

Congratulations op!

I am concerned about my ear and I called spec savers, nothing for four weeks ,same with local NHS service!

I'm not sure mine is blocked though.
It seems more mushy...

Flaunch · 12/07/2022 20:05

Mine felt mushy but there was a big pellet of ear wax in there that I fished out in seconds. The relief! I’d felt disorientated and deaf for weeks!

Unfortunately I did the deed in the garden and the wax pellet blew off and went between the slats of my deck before I could photograph it for the sporners… I was gutted 😆
