Keep waking up with huge scratches

I must be scratching myself in my sleep, I wake up with really bad scratches on my body, usually around my chest and stomach, occasionally on my face too which is annoying.
I do get itchy at night which is frustrating. It's quite worrying as some of them look like I've been scratched by a cat.
I don't think I'd be able to wear mittens in bed as my hands would get hot, and I have very short nails too so not sure why this is happening, have no recollection of ever scratching myself either.
Does anyone else do this and managed to find a solution?

Yes I sometime wake up with really bad scratches across my chest. I don’t remember scratching and I have really short, weak nails. I now wear a top that covers my chest area,

Silly question but do you sleep alone OP? My DP is a right wriggle bum when he's having dreams.

My feet used to get crazy itchy at night but it would wake me up. The GP advised anti histamines basically hay fever tablets and it sorted. Obviously check with the chemist and be sure they are ok for you but the one a day over the counter ones stopped it for me.

Socks on your hands

Are you sure it’s from your own nails? I once got a series of scratches over a few nights while staying with family and realised eventually there was a spring loose in the mattress. It had a surprisingly sharp end!

Pfffffffft funny

Would holding something as you went to sleep help? A child I looked after used to scratch his face if he didn't get put to bed holding a toy or balled up socks.

Goggle787 · 30/06/2022 22:14

I'll try anti histamines and also the socks! Our mattress seems ok.. I do share the bed with my partner but not sure if it's him, if hasn't said anything anyway!

Yes dry skin.

Use a good body lotion twice a day, and cut your nails right down till it clears up - you can’t scratch if they are really short

You can get silicone covers for your fingers (had them to cover an injury at work), they might help? Would be cooler than gloves at least.
Do you wear jewellery or a watch in bed? Does dp?

conxray · 30/06/2022 22:41

DP could be doing it. Try sleeping separately from him for a few days to see if they are the problem.
