I have health issues and heard many with it saying to go fluoride free to get better. Have any of you gone fluoride free with dental hygience and what was effect?

Are the people saying it dental or medical health practitioners? if not, I would ignore them

Cocowatermelon · 29/06/2022 22:31

How much do you like having teeth?

BulbasaurusRex · 29/06/2022 22:32

I have, because I started to get lots of spots around my mouth and it turned out to be some kind of reaction to the toothpaste.

Ive been using a fluoride free toothpaste for a few years now and have no dental problems. At my last checkup a couple of months ago he said he doesn’t need to see me for 2 years.

I can’t say about any other health claims to being fluoride free, only that for me it cleared up my skin and my teeth have been fine.

This.

I had numerous fillings in my teeth as a child. Fluoride in toothpaste and water is a game changer for me and no way would I be ditching the toothpaste.

Honestly it sounds like those people who tell you to get all your amalgam fillings removed in order to cure every disease there has ever been.

Indiaorigin · 29/06/2022 22:45

Who is stating this? If it is a research study from a respected hospital or clinical organisation or even better your own specialist I’m sure dentist and hygienist would work with you to safeguard your dental health if you use non fluoride toothpaste. Also is your tap water fluoridated?

If it is an individual with no qualifications saying this see NHS section on Fluoride and how vital it is.

Discovereads · 29/06/2022 22:50

While some people do react to various toothpastes it is most often the SLS in it or food dye. So if you are having any kind of mouth sores or skin spots, try SLS and colour free toothpaste and don’t ditch the fluoride.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/06/2022 22:52

Fluoride is essential for oral health.

who is advising you otherwise?

Underscore21 · 29/06/2022 22:57

The effect of fluoride-free toothpaste is usually rampant caries in my professional experience; GA extractions for children unfortunate enough to be subjected to this regime and multiple restorations/extractions/partial dentures/complete dentures in adults who convince themselves fluoride is to be avoided.

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/06/2022 23:01

What does “health issues” mean? Cancer? IBS? Schizophrenia? Multiple Sclerosis? Psoriasis? Hypochondria? It’s a bit of a vague piece of terminology to use as a basis for wanting to give up something proven to be essential for dental health. What peer-reviewed studies have you read in depth which suggest the “health issues” you have are caused or exacerbated by fluoride?

Sqeebling · 29/06/2022 23:02

Who on earth is telling you this and what exactly are your health issues

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/06/2022 23:29

Coz chemicals innit.

Gotta ban h20 asap.

mdinbc · 29/06/2022 23:29

My DH has contact dermatitis around his mouth, and we are trying to figure out the cause. We have switched over to flouride free for now.

MumsnetMafia · 29/06/2022 23:39

Fluoride free for about 6 months here. It's a known endocrine disrupter so could quite possibly be causing some health issues.

Hydroxyapatite is a mineral that has been shown in numerous studies to be as effective as fluoride, there are lots today good brands out there. Very common in Japan. It's what we use and my teeth are perfect and dentist has no issues.

As an aside, I love when people get snarky at others questioning the status quo of the chemicals we use daily in our lives! Hilarious.

Not at the level of fluoride exposure from toothpaste!

Oxygen has been posited as a carcinogen. Should we ban O2?

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 30/06/2022 00:05

There's probably fluoride in your drinking water too.

MumsnetMafia · 30/06/2022 00:20

"The dose makes the poison" is often bandied around when talking about stuff like this, of course too much oxygen would kill you and a little fluoride probably won't, but it's foolish to think that some people don't have heightened sensitivities to the vast array of chemicals we live with every single day!

MumsnetMafia · 30/06/2022 00:21

It depends where you live. Southern Water doesn't add fluoride to theirs.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 30/06/2022 00:26

@MumsnetMafia

"Heightened sensivivities."

Any links to evidence of this?

MumsnetMafia · 30/06/2022 00:43

@VeniVidiWeeWee

Errr, yeah. It's all around you. People who can't use bio laundry detergents, reactions to suncream/skin care/perfumes/cleaning products/shampoo/make up. The list is endless. You don't have to be a scientist to acknowledge that.

No need to be argumentative, nothing I've said is particularly "woo"

Discovereads · 30/06/2022 06:17

It’s true some people are allergic to fluoride. But that’s an issue with their immune systems, not an issue of sensitivity to fluoride being at toxic levels in toothpaste.

anotherbrewplease · 30/06/2022 06:41

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fluoride/#:~:text=Around%205.8%20million%20people%20in,made%20by%20individual%20local%20authorities

Only 5.8 million people get fluoridated water in the UK. I was surprised to find that out.

Bickles · 30/06/2022 06:46

I have met lots of people who have done this. Not sure it has helped their general health but they need lots of fillings! Look up the ingredients of composite/ amalgam/ glass ionomer cement and see what you think then.

Underscore21 · 30/06/2022 12:13

@mdinbc
It's SLS free toothpaste you should be trying not fluoride free.
Something like pro-enamel.

HCampbell · 21/03/2026 13:02

I use HAp toothpaste. I bought the powder and made my own toothpaste. Also people use it to complement their fluoride free toothpaste. Natural Answer Products offers hydroxyapatite powder for instance.
