Private nursery

Are privately run nurseries underfunded?

Our dd goes full time and it costs over £1200 per month for a place, which isn't cheap in my opinion.

Quite often a request will come out to help raise money for a piece of equipment, or supplies of some sort.

A friend who works there, is often expected to set up activities for the child, and if any supplies are needed, then they are expected to pay out of their own pocket.

Just today, one of the other staff members put an appeal out to local business for a £20 slide in exchange for advertising on their facebook page.

Aibu to expect the nursery fees to cover all of this stuff or am I grossly out of touch?

That is not my experience of private nursery. Ours have never asked for a penny other than the agreed fees

Sounds similar to the one my dd is at. Which is really a pee take considering how much we pay. My friend has her daughter in a council run one with the 30 hours from the Government and the nursery is amazing!
Im actually secretly jealous as they have new equipment, really creative garden etc.
The one my dd is at actually looks a bit outdated but it is an ex 1800s manor house so can see its perserving that History..however, they do seem to be struggling with money and often do fund raisers and things.
There are just no decent council nurseries round our area plus we need later hours.

They can get funding for kids who are eligible but many nurseries have closed over the last few years as they had been making a loss.

I voted YANNU but think May be different depending on area OP. I pay the same each month and as I have a DC born in mid sept I will end up paying our nursery well over £40,000 over the years DC is there until school - this is WITH taking into account the 20% tax free childcare plus the 18 months of 30 hours. Let’s say they have at least 50 other parents paying the same (largish nursery consisting of 5 rooms To account for age group) that’s still less than 500k turn over/annum, so taking off overheads and wages I suppose it’s not a huge amount of profit given I know what my own employers turnover vs profit is.

Still given all the above, they shouldn’t be pleading poverty to the families paying these costs...
