Daily Mirror for £1- what’s next?

Wow…

Bought the Daily Mirror today at a petrol station and was shocked to see it is now £1! Crikey; when did this happen? Wasn’t it like, 35p last year or around that??

Tbf, I don’t read newspapers normally- other than the metro for the Tuesday property section (and weep!), but I honestly felt like I was in Back to the Future 2. An old woman behind me honestly said “where’ve you been for the last 20 years.

Shockingly, this surprised me more than
paying 2.06 pl for my E5 petrol. Madness!

I think it’s inevitable that print newspapers are going to go up in price. The production costs are so much higher than their digital counterparts and there are far fewer people buying them. It’s a shame. I like an actual newspaper, but rarely buy one because of the availability of online news.

NellesVilla · 29/06/2022 18:04

Agreed; I just thought £1 was a misprint at first!

Why buy papers in this day. 30£ a month crazy,as you can read a everything on line,

Momicrone · 29/06/2022 18:42

What's next? I dunno, other stuff that used to be cheaper? I hear that fags are expensive now.

Florenz · 29/06/2022 18:49

All newspapers are a rip-off and a waste of paper.

FredaFox · 29/06/2022 18:55

I can't believe people still buy the tabloids, awful rags

Bookridden · 29/06/2022 19:50

God, there's some judgemental, ignorant crap on this thread. Newspapers play a valuable part in upholding our democracy and contributing to public debate. They are partisan, but most make an effort to have writers from all parts of the political spectrum. They can also be entertaining, offer advice, puzzles, lifestyle features etc. If you get all of your news from a newspaper website without making a financial contribution, you're effectively taking money from journalists and helping to ensure the steady decline of a trade, a way of life and something that provides an income for many, as well as helping to preserve our political infrastructure. So yeah, I would rather papers were cheaper, but I know their value and I think having a range of publications really matters.

TwoMonthsOff · 29/06/2022 19:54

‘Glossy’ Magazines are worse, full of adverts and maybe 15% of magazine consists of ridiculous and badly written boring ‘ articles ‘
waste of trees/ink/production costs etc.

NellesVilla · 30/06/2022 18:38

You’re not wrong, @TwoMonthsOff - I bought a “bumper” magazine pack with OK! mag plus 2 x smaller ones. In one of the smaller ones, most of the stuff was duplicated articles from OK! magazine, backed up by adverts! All mags were v ad-heavy!

Wow, I thought the Sun, Mirror, Star etc. were about 40p?! How much does the Telegraph cost, in that case...? Seems like everything is doubling price, it is terrifying.

I paid almost £5 for a big tub of Nesquik earlier; I swear the last time I bought it, it cost about £2?!

Packet of ciggies is now £10 or more and they don't sell packets of 10 anymore 😦 am so glad I quit smoking about 10 yrs ago, as could not afford it now! Not sure how anybody can.

MumBlah · 30/06/2022 18:52

Our gas bill has gone from £120 to £300 pcm as well.

BlackForestCake · 30/06/2022 20:12

Newspapers play a valuable part in upholding our democracy and contributing to public debate.

Well, that's the theory, yes.

Which British newspaper would you say actually does that?

Florenz · 30/06/2022 20:23

Newspapers do play a part in our democracy but there's no need for them to be on paper anymore. It's just a waste of trees.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 30/06/2022 20:39

YABU for buying the Daily Mirror.

Propagandalf · 30/06/2022 21:38

You can either pay £1 for a newspaper or sub online for less. Pick your battles.

I remember 32-page magazines being £2.50 and that was in 1992!

You could say that about anything printed on paper, including books. Not everyone has access to digital media. Are they not allowed to benefit from that part of our democracy?

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 30/06/2022 22:09

I’m surprised to hear it could be any cheaper, surely it costs more than 35p to actually produce and distribute? I only get the Sunday Times which has a lot of magazines admittedly but it’s £3.50!

It’s not just this. Journalists still need to be paid, and the wages are really not very high at all.

ManateeFair · 30/06/2022 23:16

Tabloids were around 30p when I used to work in a newsagent 27 years ago so it would be ridiculous if they were still that kind of price today. Frankly I think a quid is a bargain for a daily paper. It takes a hell of a lot of people and effort to produce and distribute a newspaper every day.

FWIW The Guardian is £2.50, Times I think £2.20 and the Telegraph is £2.80 I believe, so £1 for a left-leaning tabloid is a steal by comparison.

They would absolutely not be a part of democracy if they were online only, because a lot of people still aren’t internet users. For example, if the newspapers weren’t available as hard copies, you’d be excluding almost half the section of the population who are over 70.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 01/07/2022 00:31

I've not bought a newspaper in 10 years ... I didn't think anyone under 60 bought them anymore.

NellesVilla · 01/07/2022 18:03

YABU for buying the Daily Mirror.

Yes. I agree, but I just fancied a rag with my Diet Coke and petrol! I never buy papers normally and was pushing the boat out!!
