I’m posting here as it’s the busiest board and I didn’t know where else to post.

Tribute on BBC website

Beautiful and heart-breaking tribute to Zara Aleena. Her stunning soul will now touch all our lives, where will this end. She just walked.

She was just walking home. RIP

BiFoldChampion · 30/06/2022 11:55

Why has there been no reaction on mumsnet - another murder of a woman? Why are there no protests.

Unfortunately it's just so commonplace. I think that's 52 so far this year. 2 women per week lost to male violence, yet men still try to divert and disrupt the conversation.

I think that her not being white and the UK not being in some form of lockdown has contributed to the lack of uproar.

pedropony76 · 30/06/2022 12:13

RIP beautiful💐

I read this article yesterday and felt so sad. Another woman dead because of a random attack. Of course there’s no uproar or protests, I’m not surprised. Thank you for starting this thread, hopefully it’ll spread more awareness!

BiFoldChampion · 30/06/2022 12:14

I am currently thinking of a friend of mine late out tonight and worrying how she’ll get across London to get home

It's not men, the NAMALT's will be along in a second. Any discussion I've seen on here about male violence towards women (and men) recently always gets detailed by NAMALT.

I also don't believe it's down to skin colour etc. Its because it's becoming commonplace.

I think sadly the lack of coverage is probably due to a mixture of her not being white and I also think some people will (subconsciously or consciously) have less of a “this could have been me” reaction due to the timing of the attack. It happened in the early hours of the morning for those of are not aware. I think people react more strongly when they either relate to the victim or the circumstances of their death, where they feel it could have been them.

There have been protests planned locally btw.

RIP Zara. I have been thinking about her and her poor family a lot. There is no foolproof way of getting home safely for women. Taxis are not always safe. I am sick of women having to modify their behaviour to try to stay safe from male predators.

Why did this creature need to do this, dosent he have a mother or a sister would he want her to be murdered?

restedbutexhausted · 30/06/2022 12:27

@Supersee I absolutely agree that it's so commonplace that we hardly blink when we see it in the news these days, but I also think skin colour does unfortunately come into it.

Look at what happened with Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry (not what the police did but the lack of public outcry about it) vs the response to Sarah Everard's abduction and murder.

Both of those events happened during lockdowns but the contrast is stark.

As for the not all men brigade, they can do one. And if it's women jumping to defend men, they're just pick-mes defending violent behaviour.

We need to stop saying things like this. Proximity to women shouldn't be the thing that stops violence.

What a beautiful tribute from her family, she was clearly a deeply loved and wonderful woman with a huge amount to give the world.

I saw a thread on this yesterday so it’s definitely being discussed. Awful, terrible news but what a beautiful and brave tribute from the family.

i absolutely think it’s partly a skin colour thing, but also it’s a very different scenario… (this is slightly clumsily written but not sure how else to express it so read past if you’re sensitive)

… finding a body vs someone going missing, likely abducted, then a body found and found to be murdered by someone who was meant to keep others safe. Sadly the public finds more gory stories more interesting.

pushingpoppies · 30/06/2022 12:50

I think there's a fatigue and weariness about it all. When will this end? 52 women murdered this year. I don't think it's helpful to say it's because of skin colour. Her case has been front page on every newspaper. Sarah Everard was particularly heightened because of the police officer's abuse of trust.and public office. So that's about ,2 women murdered a week. Lots of them don't get mentioned. 'aspiring lawyer' featured heavily. I don't think 'aspiring [insert working class profession here]', a woman like that, would have got any attention at all.

Charley50 · 30/06/2022 13:13

Her families' tribute showed such strength. RIP beautiful Zara. I cried watching this story on the news last night. Just devastating.

justagirlstandinginfrontofcake · 30/06/2022 13:45

Name changed because I don't want to discuss how I know this. But one of the reasons for less coverage is that the perpetrator has mental illness and it appears these were the cause of the attack.

fghj149 · 30/06/2022 13:50

RIP ❤️

'For our sisters, who were just walking home.'
Rest in peace, sister Zara.

There is another thread on this. Yes, the family statement yesterday was very eloquent. RIP Zara Aleena.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 30/06/2022 13:54

I'm so upset and angry about this. I don't feel I have the words.

I definitely agree colour is a factor in the way the media reports on the murders of women, but I do think the reason Sarah Everard's case particularly resonated was because she was missing for a week before her body was found, so there was a build up of coverage.

RIP Zara.
