AIBU to ask if this sounds like a scam

I'm selling a fridge on FB marketplace for about £100. Someone messaged to say he was working and ask if I can give it to a UPS delivery guy tomorrow and that the delivery guy will give me cash on collection. There are no pics of the inside of the fridge or anything, for all the buyer knows, the glass shelves could all be smashed and it could be full of mould (I hadn't got round to photographing it yet as I'm defrosting it ready to move and all the drawers are going through the dishwasher). Fridges need transporting carefully. I have zero packing materials for this fridge and I'm not happy handing it over to a third party. Do UPS even collect things like fridges? Surely you'd need to book something like that in advance of tomorrow? And surely it would cost more than just buying a new fridge?

Is this a scam or am I cutting my nose off to spite my face if I don't accept this way of selling my appliance?

Oh they want to shift it about 150 miles away.

Total scam - these things are always coming up on here.

QuestionableMouse · 28/06/2022 17:57

Absolutely a scam! I'd block them!

Haus1234 · 28/06/2022 17:57

I think that’s a scam I’m afraid! Why would the delivery guy have cash.

dementedpixie · 28/06/2022 17:59

Yeah, sounds like a scam

DebussytoaDiscoBeat · 28/06/2022 17:59

Scam, why would someone buy a fridge for £100 from miles away and pay for UPS without even seeing it first?

fairgame84 · 28/06/2022 18:00

Its a well known scam.

Discovereads · 28/06/2022 18:01

I don’t think it’s a scam per se, but if you did agree to it you would have to package the fridge for transport. If you don’t want the hassle, tell the buyer sorry.

Echobelly · 28/06/2022 18:02

If you have to ask if it's a scam, then it's a scam.

And yes, I think I've heard of this specific one before.

onmywaytooblivion · 28/06/2022 18:03

A scam ups driver would never ever be allowed to do that

Hugasauras · 28/06/2022 18:04

Common scam. The 'cash on delivery from X company' is always a red flag.

SQLserved · 28/06/2022 18:05

UPS delivery would not be handing you cash

gamerchick · 28/06/2022 18:06

It's a common one. If you agree, they'll ask you to pay an insurance fee upfront which they'll add to the 'cash in the envelope'.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 28/06/2022 18:06

I must be missing something because I don’t understand who is being scammed here. If the vendor, OP, gets £100 from the UPS delivery person, why would she care? The fridge has gone and she’s got the money.
Obviously if there’s no cash handed over, the fridge stays where it is.

Georgeskitchen · 28/06/2022 18:06

Yes it's a scam.

I think some of you need to join a scammer page to keep up to date personally. Especially if you sell stuff online.

RedCarsGoFaster · 28/06/2022 18:09

It's a very well known scam. Usually focuses on sellers on Facebook, Gumtree etc.

Loics · 28/06/2022 18:11

Very well-known scam, I've had it a couple of times now. Most people I know have stopped selling on Marketplace because scams like this are so rife.

dementedpixie · 28/06/2022 18:12

There will be no UPS driver with cash coming to the door!

There is no UPS person. If the OP agrees, she will be asked to pay some sort of fee which the buyer can't do for some reason but which will be paid back when the courier arrives. The courier will never arrive...

ScamOrNoScam · 28/06/2022 18:19

Thank you for your help everyone. I haven't got the brain space right now for this nonsense, I'm trying to move from a 4 bed to a 2 bed in another country (I'm not in the UK and this person is allegedly on the side of the country where there are at least 2 Ikeas and a load of other shops you could just buy a fridge from).

I tried Googling UPS cash on delivery and it appears they offer some sort of service just to confuse me even more, but presumably theirs is that the buyer can pay for delivery not that they give cash to a seller.

I don’t sell online anyway, but I can see it’s fraught with problems.
So many nasty people out there.
