Gone from a size 10 to a size 24 in 2 years. Feeling shit about myself

I have always been slim. At one point I was a size 4! I usually sit around a size 10-12 comfortably, weighing around 11 stone, very small on top, bigger on my bum and thighs. But since giving birth to my son 2 years ago I have ballooned up to a size 24, and weigh 21st, at the age of 27.

I think I have sleep apnea, get out of breath easily, find myself making snorting noises sometimes, breathe very heavily, I just feel shit.

I went up to a size 16 in pregnancy, and have gained 7 stone since becoming a mum. I’m not in denial. I don’t eat the best, but I don’t eat enough to warrant this much weight gain - I am still actively gaining every month no matter what I eat!

I have PCOS and had postpartum psychosis so have been on pregabalin, aripriprazole, lamotrogine, and lurasidone ever since. Would any of these medications make a difference? I know weight gain can be a side effect of all..

I’ve got to have gallbladder surgery on Thursday and I am worried about the anaesthetic and having sleep apnea, I’m worried that my weight will complicate things.

I guess I’m just posting for support, I really want to lose weight but every time I try I’m still gaining weight. I’ve had my thyroid checked and it’s fine.

Just feel so bloody crap and horrible about myself :(

@Buythebag40 I think that has been put in a much better way. 😊 Easy to misunderstand over MN but it did sound a little jarring.

I actually have lean PCOS and can have the opposite problem - as a PP said, also not a brag! - but literally everything to do with metabolism seems to be turned on its head. It's such an all-consuming condition and very misudnerstood.

I do agree there can be a lot of denial in the general population about what constitutes healthy eating (not helped by food companies and outdated NHS diet advice), but the OPs circumstances do seem a little more complex.

Glad MN is causing a distraction 😜

And plz excuse typos!

Pregablin sent me from a size 12 to size 16. Been off it now over a year but the weight is hard to shift despite trying. Please see your doctor about this weight gain as its alot in 2 years and if you've always been slim it could be worth checking the meds.

RobertaFirmino · 29/06/2022 21:02

Oh it's definitely your meds. APs should come with an elasticated waistband! I piled it on when I took olanzapine. You're on quite a lot too and don't aripiprazole and lurasidone do the same job? I am in no way advising that you stop any of your meds but it would be well worth asking for a medication review.

HappyHedgehog247 · 29/06/2022 21:08

It’s the meds. They are known to have metabolic side effects. Time for a meds review?

Talk to your doctor about your weight gain and medications.

Talk about your thyroid function too.

You will need a high fibre and lower fat diet after your GB operation. Aim for 1500-1700 calories a day with lots of veggies, fruit, beans, lots of water, and whole grains instead of processed/white. Get out and exercise. Walking is great.

Eat well and exercise. I know it's much easier said then done, I'm overweight myself. Good luck on your weight loss journey

@BobbieWaterbury, may I ask when you say you stick to the FAST800 diet, which part do you follow? Thank you.

Hi I think I'm doing the intermittent fasting keto 800 plan - lunch and supper around 400 cals each. I've been surprised at how filling and tasty the meals are. I eat a bit of lower sugar fruit and nothing else outside the plan. Not craving carbs anymore which is amazing. And feeling pretty energised!

Friars23 · 30/06/2022 17:34

Thank you BobbieWaterbury.

Friars23 · 30/06/2022 17:38

bobbiewaterbury, I have understood correctly that the keto fast800 is something you are are following ongoing not just for a certain time period? Thank you.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/06/2022 18:00

You need low carb/keto to lose weight with PCOS. It’s shit but it’s the only way. Start by not counting calories but only eating protein and vegetables. Drink loads of water (no sugar free stuff). You’ll lose a few pounds in a week.

Antipsychotics are notorious for massive weight gain
