Dd had 8 week jabs this morning and was given the rotavirus vaccines as drops on the tongue. The nurse told me to be careful when touching, kissing and changing nappies as it's a live vaccine and could cause sickness and diarrhoea. I'm a serious emetophobe so this has really freaked me out.

My older dc never had this vaccine as it's apparently quite new. Has anyone actually gotten ill from this? Is it passed in the same way as a bug? She was sick after the post vaccine calpol and clearing all that up made me feel anxious.

i would suggest you try Thrive. They have a high success with emetaphobia.!

RampantIvy · 28/06/2022 15:51

Polio vaccines were live when DD had hers nearly 22 years ago. We were just told to make sure we washed our hands thoroughly after nappy changes, which we did anyway. No-one contracted polio.

You will be fine.

Lovemusic33 · 28/06/2022 15:56

You will be fine, just wash your hands after changing nappies etc..

pretty sure it’s not a new vaccination, it just used to be combined with one of the other vaccinations rather than given orally? My dc were given live polio vaccines too and the advice was the same.

I totally get your fear as I am an emetophobe too, it’s great that they have this vaccine, just with they had one for norovirus too.

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 28/06/2022 15:21

Curious op but how did you cope with morning sickness? I have a fear of being sick too and being pregnant worries me.

Thankfully I never suffered with it in any of my pregnancies. I did get nausea but was never actually sick. I just ate a very bland diet and had the windows open a lot in those early weeks!

As a pp said though, despite it being an unpleasant phobia I was never going to let it take over my life to the extent that it stopped me doing something as wonderful as having kids.

Thank you for all the helpful kind advice. Really not sure why others have to be so rude. What susie says of sally and all that!

Yes I picked up rotavirus after my DS had his vaccinations. I'd advise you to be very strict with handwashing after changing any Nappies, it was awful!! No vomiting but diarrhoea every ten minutes for a whole day, I've never known anything like it! The cramps were something else!

AliceAbsolum · 28/06/2022 16:15

Do NOT go for Thrive therapy.
Have you tried CBT OP? It's evidence based and free on the nhs. You don't have to suffer unnecessarily x

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 28/06/2022 16:19

Im also an emetophobe OP and have had 2 DC get the rotavirus drops. I also freaked out but didn't catch anything. Just keep washing your hands after nappy changes and you will be fine.

Subaru4336 · 28/06/2022 16:20

@AliceAbsolum why not Thrive? Different things work for different people.

AliceAbsolum · 28/06/2022 16:22

I knew someone would pick me up on that?
Yes different things work for different people. But it's a money grabbing scheme based on very little evidence. Treating phobias is a complex issue that is for medical professionals to do. Yes try it if you have exceeded all the other options but go for the free treatment that has actually been shown to work first.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 28/06/2022 16:24

I've never heard of any adult becoming unwell after their child has the vaccine. The vaccine is a weakened form of the virus (otherwise it would hospitalised a lot of babies) so a weak form that causes some mild discomfort and a strange nappy or two in a baby is extremely unlikely to have any effect on an adult with a normal immune system. I have a shit immune system and I was fine

Magdalayed · 28/06/2022 16:26

Hi OP. With my now 7 year old, I didn’t know how strict you had to be after the vaccine. No one mentioned it. I did get a dodgy belly after it. I’m also an emetaphobe so wasn’t best pleased! This time around after my DS has had it, I’ve been VERY strict with hand washing and have been ok

willithappen · 28/06/2022 16:30

I had a bad stomach after my dd got her first one at 8 weeks, DD was fine

As others have said they get it again at 16 weeks. It's been made very clear to me each time to be careful because it can be passed on easily. A friend also caught it from her dd shortly after too.

Wednesdayafternoon · 28/06/2022 16:33

I have a major sickness phobia OP so don't worry, I hear you!
Both of mine have had the vaccine and nobody caught it. My youngest actually caught the virus almost immediately after having the vaccine (doctor thought he might have had it when he had the vaccine) and we were still all ok!

Try and just take one day at a time. Imagine all the families and babies who have the vaccine in the house, the majority will be ok! You've probably built up your own immunity towards it over the course of your life anyway!

ChickenBurgers · 28/06/2022 16:35

You can as it’s a live vaccine, my middle and youngest couldn’t have it as I was on immunosuppressants in pregnancy which means no live vaccines before age 1.

my eldest had it though as I wasn’t taking immunosuppressants with him and I didn’t get anything from him. I know lots of people who have had babies and none of them ever got rotavirus from their babies following the vaccine either. Just ensure you practice solid hygiene when changing nappies, making sure they’re put straight in the bin, cleaning up any spit up quickly and washing hands after cleaning up any sick (I mean normal baby sick, I don’t believe it causes actual vomiting).

CockSpadget · 28/06/2022 16:52

Jaysus, the comments on here, some of you must be wound up so tight, you're like coiled springs ready to snap. People with emetophobia shouldn't have kids?!? Chuffs sake, does that go for other phobias as well? There will be a new one soon, postophobia, the fear of asking a reasonable question on Mumsnet in case you get savaged.
Sympathies OP, it's a shitty thing to have Flowers

ChagSameachDoreen · 28/06/2022 14:45

My advice, and I say this on the many emetophobia threads that pop up, is to get some help for it ASAP before it affects your child. My childhood was absolutely blighted by my mother's anxieties and phobias.

I am a life long emetophobe. My dc are 21, 19 and 15 and they have no idea about my phobia. I’ve kept it well hidden.

Jazzyjeff44 · 28/06/2022 17:27

@bendmeoverbackwards my kids also don't know about it. I've never made it obvious to them or 'hyperventilated' as pp suggested.

I know the suggestions of therapy are well meaning but I don't think it's necessary. I get panicky when I'm unwell and I worry about hygiene when there's a bug in the house but otherwise it isn't too debilitating.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 28/06/2022 21:32

They will see you’re anxious. Of course they will. And yes. If you are actually phobic about this then treatment would be advisable.

Jazzyjeff44 · 28/06/2022 21:43

@Wolfiefan no. They won't. Because I don't allow them to see me anxious about it. As I've said several times, I can deal with their emissions. And I don't tend to invite them into the bathroom when I'm being unwell to witness my anxiety.

Maybe I'm not actually 'phobic' about it. Maybe I just find it deeply stressful and unpleasant. Either way my question has been answered by some helpful posters and my need for therapy/decision to have kids wasn't really the original point.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 28/06/2022 21:47

If the very thought of being unwell causes you extreme anxiety they will pick up on it. Of course they will.

Dontgetmestarted65 · 28/06/2022 21:53

One person in my baby group caught it from their baby having the vaccine. It's not as bad as a sickness bug because they're not shedding it like you would be if you're ill. Just wash your hands after nappy changes and don't kiss on the lips or put their dummy in your mouth.

Jazzyjeff44 · 28/06/2022 22:04

@Wolfiefan OK. You know my kids, mental state and lifestyle habits better than I do Wink
