Anal fissure support

SadFace2 · 28/06/2022 11:55

I know this isn't an unreasonable debate but I'm posting for traffic because I really need some help here.

Had surgery for piles which is all sorted now but suffered a tear during my surgery. I've been struggling ever since. 5 weeks now. Doesn't sound long but I am starting to go under.

They gave me botox during the surgery and since I'm not doing well I'm assuming more Botox in the future wouldn't be especially helpful. I was using diltiazem cream but that's now started to react badly and really set me back.

I'm being careful with food, barely eating to be honest. I'm on movicol so I'm not constipated and I don't have diarrhea. I'm using a footstool to go to the toilet and I'm having baths to encourage blood flow and healing.

I don't know that there's anything more I can do but I'm starting to lose my mind so had to post.

Even if you don't have a miracle cure I think I'd just appreciate some support at this point. I don't think I've ever been so low.
Thank you.

Talk to your GP, there is effective medication for fissures. I can't use it because it gives me splitting headaches, but there is another option that's almost as good.

captainnopatience · 28/06/2022 12:12

I had one of these after childbirth, horrendous pain, wise than childbirth itself. A year on I'm sorry to say I do still have flare ups. What helped me was 2-3 Laxido pouches daily for about 6 months. And a TONNE of water. You cannot get constipated. I hope it heals soon

SadFace2 · 28/06/2022 12:59

Thank you for your replies. I'm just starting to feel hopeless.

Bless you. Talk to your doctor op.

C4tintherug · 28/06/2022 16:14

I’ve had it, had Botox and it went away, then came back and had Botox again. From time to time I can feel it “flare” up and I have to be ultra careful with my diet.

it really was the most fucking awful time, I was having several baths a day to get any kind of relief, including in the middle of the night! Sorry to say it went on for months and months. I did use the rectogesic ointment stuff which did give some relief.

you need to get referred back to the bum doctor. I really really feel for you, it was the most awful pain. I am a teacher and I remember standing in one lesson with the room spinning around me just from the pain. So embarrassing too, it’s not like you can say “my anal fissure is causing problems “ when you are struggling, so I ended up telling my colleagues I had migraines.

Lifeisrelentless · 28/06/2022 16:41

I had one of these after giving birth and the pain was horrific, on par with labour. I was lucky in that mine healed quickly and I used lots of laxatives and prune juice in the meantime. I was also barely eating as so scared of the pain. Get back onto your doctor emphasising it’s your ruining your life, and you have my every sympathy as it’s a horrible thing to have plus not something you feel you can openly talk about! I hope it passes for you!!

SadFace2 · 28/06/2022 16:56

I'm still under my consultant, due to see him next week. Last time I saw him he said I was healing well and just to carry on but I've had this awful reaction to the Diltiazem Cream since then and things seem much worse.

Having already had Botox recently and now not being able to use the cream that's supposed to be the absolute best thing for fissures I'm not sure what else he can do for me. I know he'll just tell me to carry on as I'm but I'm seriously not coping now.

Poor poor you. No advice, just loads of sympathy. This sounds horrendous. How we take for granted going for a poo...

Summerof22 · 28/06/2022 17:02

I feel for you, my sister just had Botox Teo weeks ago and it hasn’t made a different.

she really wants to have an operation but doctors are pushing back because they want her to have a colonoscopy (because our mum had colon cancer), but it’s not happening any time soon because she’s still on so much pain.

she’s told them at this point she couldn’t care less about the colonoscopy, I think she’ll have to demand it eventually (don’t know if that’s possible though).

this is not in the UK.

so no help to you but wanted to say I feel for you, my sister is desperate as well.

DilemmaDelilah · 28/06/2022 17:06

I absolutely feel your pain and I am so sorry you are suffering like this. I had excruciating pain for nearly two years, with increasing amount of really strong pain killers, before I was finally referred for Botox. I was still crying with pain while on Fentanyl patches and trying to work while I was so doped up I could barely function. Botox worked miracles for me - immediately. I think you may need another treatment perhaps? Keep up with the Movicol and lots of water and ask for painkillers to help you cope while you are healing.

Furrydogmum · 28/06/2022 17:55

I had an anal fissure after the birth of my first child. It was the most painful thing ever! I had my back passage stretched after 6 months of agony - was the most amazing immediate relief. I was only offered haemorrhoid inserts in the six months of agony - they didn't touch the sides so to speak!

Womeninblack · 28/06/2022 18:01

Coconut oil applied to the area helped me

Ardmano · 28/06/2022 18:08

I would agree with the above re coconut oil. do you have any lube you could apply prior to a movement? I thought I had anal fissures in the past but none as bad as the ones described above so unsure how helpful lube will be but it helped me when I had small ones.

caringcarer · 28/06/2022 18:44

Anusol is meant for piles but it has something numbing and healing in. When I had a fiscure I used it before my op and it helped me feel it less.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 28/06/2022 18:52

I suffered terribly post childbirth. What worked for me was regular baths with lavender, peppermint and tea tree oil. Immediate pain relief and aided healing in super fast time

SadFace2 · 28/06/2022 19:00

Thank you for all the replies, I'd just got myself into a bit of a state.

Feeling that I was going in the right direction and then reacting to the cream so badly (pain, soreness, bleeding) just killed off any positivity I had left.

I've got a grip this evening and just going to carry on with the movicol and baths minus the cream and see how it goes.

I do really appreciate the support though, it helps to be able to talk about it and hear from people who have managed to heal and put it behind them.

The cream is anoheal or something like. Hugely expensive so Nhs won’t always prescribe. Other stuff above will help

VegMam · 28/06/2022 20:00

You have my full sympathy.

I had this after baby was born and the pain was unbelievable. I have a high pain threshold (had hormone induction birth with no pain relief!) but with the fissure each toilet trip I thought I would throw up or pass out from the pain. It was truly awful, as painful as child birth (but I had to go through it several times every day).

it was so bad I’ve since told everyone about it 😅

GP prescribed scheriproct and something else suppositories and they finally cleared it up. I hope you get relief soon.

Cantanka · 28/06/2022 20:20

I just want to send my support to you. These are indescribably excruciating.

it helped me to use glycerin suppositories, which make you go - means you don’t strain at all.

I really hope you are recovered soon x

JustTheOneSwan · 28/06/2022 20:33

Solidarity.
Pain is unreal, I've had a few problems with treatment up to and including surgery and understand how low you get.
As a pp said it's not the type of thin g you can chat about with just anybody (God bless my poor dad having to listen about my poo/pain schedule) it's a lonely time.
can you manage a suppository? If not some pile creams have local anaesthetic too.
also dampen some sanitary towels and freeze them, I found a bit of relief from those for the throbbing.

JustTheOneSwan · 28/06/2022 20:36

Also vaseline, industrial quantity all the time. And Epsom salt in the bath get a sack full from Amazon.

megletthesecond · 28/06/2022 20:41

Fissure pain is the worst, you have my sympathies. I had one for a decade before I finally had botox.
It's been OK for a few years now but I had a very stressful period over Xmas which flared my IBS up and seems to have irritated a fissure. Now I've got to keep really active and eat less for a few weeks so it can heal.

Thank you for all these messages. Literally praying for a bit less pain tomorrow and an easier day.

I have to take the kids to school in the morning and I'm worried that I'll be in too much pain to drive.
