How can I stop bleeding?

ILoveAndrew · 27/06/2022 20:24

I sometimes bleed for weeks upon weeks. It's very heavy and lots of clots. A while ago, the doctor prescribed Norethisterone (Utovlan) and it works a treat. However, I've had a bit of stress in my life of late and also currently positive (and poorly) with Covid.

Today I have started bleeding really heavy again. I have taken three of the Norethisterone today and it's got worse if anything. I'm bleeding through a thick pad within ten minutes. It's an absolute nightmare being sat on the toilet or in the bath all the time. I don't want to go to A&E as I'm positive with Covid. Is there anything else I can take/eat/drink to stop the bleeding or at least slow it down?

I would give 111 a ring, and see what they say. You could speak to your GP in the future about trying tranexamic acid, it has worked a treat for me.

Willow8383 · 27/06/2022 20:34

Please call 111 just to make sure you’re safe x

Pretty sure that bleeding that heavily is an emergency, Covid or not - soaking through a pad very few mins is not usual
you should call 999 and explain and they can make a decision.
i was on the phone to 111 for an hour on Saturday before I was told to go go a&e by which point you will have bled a lot more

BattenburgDonkey · 27/06/2022 20:37

You need to go to a&e, bleeding that much that quickly is a larger risk than the risk your covid poses.

TeddyTrucks · 27/06/2022 20:38

The only thing that worked for me was an endometrial ablation but you can't have one of those if you want to be pregnant in the future. Hope you get it sorted soon xx

Redruby2020 · 27/06/2022 20:38

Gosh sounds awful for you, and that is heavy and a lot of blood, yes if you haven't already done so, please call 111 or 999. I don't think you shouldn't be able to go to A&E because of Covid.

I was going to say what another poster said, about the Tranexamic acid tablets. I have those, also because I can't take hormones now. And it was those or the coil/or the one with some progesterone in it, whichever one that is as I get mixed up between the coil/mirena.

Yes I agree, I mean I had forgotten to say in my other post to the OP, that I can bleed through a tampon easily within one hour of using it, but to be bleeding that much within ten minutes, that warrants a trip to A&E.

D0lphine · 27/06/2022 20:49

Yes I agree- go to A&E or call 111 for an out of hours GP appointment

Saracenia · 27/06/2022 20:50

Don't worry about going to A&E if you have Covid, just wear a mask and tell them when you check in. I had paramedics come out to my house when I had Covid and it was fine.

ILoveAndrew · 27/06/2022 20:53

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for your kind replies. I will head off to A&E. I just don't want to infect anyone else that might be in there (it's been hellish and might have been what started my bleeding along with the stresses of life in general!). Anyway, I'll see what they say. Hopefully they can do something without me getting severely anemic, which has happened before now.

I was like this just over a year ago, I had endometrial ablation, it hasn’t worked as well as I expected but my periods are now regular and only last 5 days, bleeding is still heavy but not as bad as before. I was told the surgery would likely stop my periods completely but sadly it didn’t but I’m still pleased I had it.

I called 111 many times and went to A&E but all they would do is check my iron levels and then send me home.

devonianBiatch · 27/06/2022 20:55

I had this two years ago. Started bleeding REALLY badly on my period and every period got longer and heavier. Lots of clots, increasing everytime I had a period. I got referred to the gynae, at the point where I saw him I was house bound due to the sheer volume of blood loss and absurdly exhausted. I losing a 500-800ml of blood a week ( I use a super Jennie cup so it's easy to track).

Long story short, I had fibroids. The fibroids are fed by oestrogen so every period it tends to get worse. They gave me hormone blockers for 6 months and touch wood, it's all good two years on.

Hope you are on the way to A n E op. Don't do what I did. I'm lucky to be here today to write this! I had v. heavy bleeding pv secondary to Warfarin therapy. Discharged myself from a hospital where the gynae told me she wasn't going to do anything for me even though my haemoglobin had fallen from 16 to 8 and I had signs and symptoms of shock! Ended up in a city hospital where I had a couple of scans, then 2 units of blood and a further unit while I had a total abdominal hysterectomy. I was v. ill afterwards as well and was diagnosed with a serious Endocrine disorder a couple of months later.

How did you get on OP?

Wattie321 · 27/08/2022 08:41

How did it turn out on end? Hope you managed to get sorted.
