Help re BA cancelled flight - is it possible?

Apologies I am being unreasonable to post on AIBU (first world problem too!) but my brother was due to fly to Gatwick with BA from Islamabad next Saturday. BA (post flying him out of the U.K.) has now cancelled his flight home. He is currently making his way down from the K2 and communication isn’t straight forward. He has given me all his details but BA won’t let me know if they have offered any alternative flight - I can log in but it only tells me what I already know (i.e. the flight booked and paid for is cancelled). Is there any way around this farce - BA has told me to ask him to add me to his booking details (well yes - if he could do that he could online chat with them himself).

Are you logged in under his BA account via his email and password?

When they’ve cancelled flights on me I’ve logged into my BA account and the options for changing flights are presented.

CupidStunt22 · 27/06/2022 11:03

Just online chat saying you're him then.

Isthatarealname · 27/06/2022 11:04

Can't you just pretend to be him on online chat 😬

RandomQuest · 27/06/2022 11:05

Are there not options to rebook an alternative when you log in as him on the BA website? Otherwise as you say they won’t speak to anyone except him unless you’re named on the booking but if another man in your family were to call and say they were him they wouldn’t know…

RandomQuest · 27/06/2022 11:06

Or yes if online chat is working then do that and pretend you’re him…

ConnieSaks · 27/06/2022 11:08

@LadyLaSnack - yes tried that but you have to contact them for alternative update - I had all his details but they won’t even say ‘yes’ as to whether any alternative has been offered!

I think you could all be right - I hate the dishonesty though! Bloody madness!

Well of course they won't! You don't give details on a customers flights to anyone but the customer, obviously.

Just be him. This is a non issue that you could have easily already fixed.

Snoken · 27/06/2022 12:14

Have you logged in with his booking reference and surname under manage my booking? If so you should be able to change the flight there.

If it's that easy what's the point of refusing to speak to anyone but the passenger?

Does it need to be a panic OP? Can't your brother sort it when he gets down? Doesn't it just add to the adventure?!

notimagain · 27/06/2022 12:26

@ConnieSaks

I think the background to this/as I understand it BA pulled off LGW-ISB (Islamabad) a few weeks back due to (supposedly) fuel supply problems at ISB, I think all was meant to be restored 1 July but presumably that hasn't happened.

If you do get hold of anybody at BA be prepared to possibly be offered a re-route through the Gulf with Qatar Airways.

..and this sort of rebooking shouldn't be as difficult as BA often make it, Good Luck.

ConnieSaks · 27/06/2022 17:51

Hey thanks everyone - and yes looks like Qatar will take them so I think panic over! I think they are cold but slightly elated but couldn’t face BA cancelling on them! They only have occasional access to a satellite phone so if BA could just have confirmed alternative flights within 24 hours either side it would have helped (avoids any need to reference customers and family having to lie!)

@ConnieSaks

Glad it looks like it's worked out, hope they have (a) good flight(s)

I may be wrong but I think these days BA always default to needing customer input in the event of rescheduling, rather than presenting the change as a fait accompli, but could be wrong.

Certainly makes life difficult in the sort of situation you describe.

balalake · 27/06/2022 20:12

Did your brother make it to the top of K2? Something not to hide if the case.

ifonly4 · 27/06/2022 20:20

I appreciate he can't contact them direct, but when BA cancelled our flight I phoned and asked the nearest flight they could get us onto, gently pointing out I hoped it'd be at no extra cost to ourselves. Very easy to sort and member of staff very helpful.

ConnieSaks · 27/06/2022 21:36

@balalake - no sorry I should have said it was K2 base camp only - so just over a 5400 metre climb (he said it was challenging in places)! His companion did make it (almost) to the top of Lhotse in March (she missed going to the top as she saved someone’s life instead - all the others (men) carried on to the summit!!).

I did some training with him in Spain this March - I definitely wouldn’t try!
