I work in the retail sector and I am standing a lot. I do have fibromyalgia and constantly in pain with my legs and constantly tired.
This week at work been given quite a few hours at work because it's stocktake.
I have just found of I am in very early weeks pregnancy. I am worried about ectopic pregnancy plus feel rubbish with Nauseous and this right side pain which being seen tommorow to be checked out.
I said to my manager I will be in after as I am in early stages haven't told much family/friends only partner and one friend knows.
I haven't told my manager but because of how unwell and worried about right side pain. Do I just tell him?
We are not allowed stocktake off and a colleague on holiday etc.
I need to speak to GP today. The friend I have told said I should just get signed off I don't need the stress. I know if I was to tell other friends they probably would say the same thing.
My manager given me holiday already and not long gone back to work. Sunday he wasn't happy I told him I couldn't work Sunday but was at the hospital. He seems okay now but not sure how he will react now to this.Given my history with pregnancy they wanted me to get early scan.
Anyone worked in retail and had this? Does anyone think at the moment until I know everything okay with pregnancy I should be signed off?

Do you have a HR number you can call if you don't want to tell your manager yet? Personally I'd tell them but I don't know your manager.

SmileyPiuPiu · 27/06/2022 06:40

Oh and re: fit note, the GP will be able to talk that through with you

MRex · 27/06/2022 06:44

Do you have some history of ectopic pregnancy? If you aren't well due to an ectopic pregnancy then go to the hospital early pregnancy unit for emergency help and ask your GP to sign you off while you recover.

It doesn't sound like this is the right job for you. Obviously you can't easily leave if pregnant and it isn't ectopic, but you should look to get something else in future where you aren't standing.

Speaking as a business owner the best thing you can do is have an honest confidential chat with your manager. Advise him of the situation and what you are concerned about, but stress you plan to work your usual hours until physically possible and that if you need any extra support as advised by GP or health professional due to your existing health conditions you will keep him in the loop.

When people go off sick unnecessarily it causes more stress for the manager, obviously if you cannot work that’s a different story but if you are just worried about x y and z, an open conversation will do you both the world of good.

Most managers would rather make adjustments for a valued team member than have them go off sick ☺️

It's funny you say that I already said because of Fibromyalgia to my manager that I don't think I can continue to work I. Retail. He normally really good with but my colleague phoned in sick and on Saturday and she was going on holiday Sunday. He was like it was short notice and I was at hospital Saturday. He seemed a lot better yesterday and think he stressing about stocktake as we short staffed already probably 3 staff down.
There is only 4 of us at the moment.
I need to look after myself so think I will probably have to tell him.
I am very anxious about this pregnancy.
He got me working like 1-9 one day and 6 hrs another for me already with Fibro is hard enough. I wanted to find something before leaving but now in a situation where do I just sign off when better with pregnancy continue until Maternity and then just leave.
I warned him already and he doesn't want me to leave and remember he was going to take a new job and I was like if you leave I am leaving. He is one of the best managers I had but I suppose it might feel I am taking the piss. Really wanted to keep pregnancy quiet for now. Then just sign of a bit.

tell your manager.

shop can offer a stool for you to lean on at the till for example and a chair for you for the stock take.

I had gone back to work after op and he given me a lot of time already..
I would reduce hours but don't think I be much help at work. My lower back killing me.
I been told ages ago by friend go just sign off because of Fibromyalgia. But this is like going to throw extra spanner in there.
We have stairs at work so not sure I can manage that.
For me feel I need to make sure everything okay with pregnancy first.
I actually don't want to sign off but feel I won't have a choice.

I can't use stool in my work. It's standing and do get breaks.

I think if you are wanting maternity pay it is based on your pay at a certain point of the pregnancy so might be worth looking into if any of this will affect that

LIZS · 27/06/2022 08:02

Has your gp written a fit-note with recommended adjustments? Surely if they were worried about an ectopic you would have been scanned urgently.

They may do next week but have appointment tommorow.

Couldn't care about maternity pay.. Might need to be signed off until I feel better and it's stocktake at work this week. Only 4 us doing it. I won't be happy to do much.
The crazy hours he got me on can't do.
So he won't be happy after going hospital Saturday and taking Sunday off.
I think just will have to tell him and get signed off until I feel better. They will be no staff but not my problem right now.
The hours too much anyway with my fibromyalgia.

Why do people talk about "getting signed off" as if its a request? Its called a "fit to work" note; your GP will decide whether or not you are fit to carry out your usual duties.

Are the hours going to be long term? If so, I'd definitely be considering leaving if you can't manage them.

Not normally fit to work with fibromyalgia and could just say it's that. I don't need to say about the pregnancy.

To answer someone question I have had ectopic but previous pregnancy was bad before. So they will need to keep close eye on me

It sounds like your main issue here is anxiety.

The doctor given me fit note and will be off 2 weeks. Hopefully will be feeling okay to go back to work.
Still waiting for fit note to come through so I can send to my manager.
