To ask if anyone has encountered any of those huge house/ field spiders yet?

Just had the 3rd huge one in as many days. Actually cannot cope. Usually I don’t have to worry about them until at least end of July/ August 😫 Early this year!!

I had a feeling something was moving just out of line of sight.

Right next to me on the sofa. 😳

(It was bigger than it looked.)

Many more spiders and webs about this year.

I shake everything I pick up - the spider shake has happened very early this year.

I try to put them outside - have been known to trap them under glasses (you need to know where they are at all times) and other things until there's someone else to remove them. I need a proper spider catcher.

MyOtherCar, OLD seems to be the place to find spider catchers 😁

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 26/06/2022 23:31

Those are the wee chunky ones that I have in the house. In my mind I picture them hanging out with the ethereal dotty looking ones a bit like Legolas and Gimli 😁

Bit of an overreaction. But hey, if you want to be spraying and breathing in chemicals in your homes for the sake of some harmless critters, knock yourself out...

It’s actually not harmful, no known side effects in humans, dogs or cats. You need to leave the room for 30 mins after spraying that’s all.

OMG thank you for this thread! i thought it was just me getting them!

after a visit last week from this oversized unwelcome guest I’ve bought a dorma orange and bergamot diffuser, given that spiders apparently hate the smell of citrus it seems to have worked.

also what on earth are those ones that look like dots with dead skinny legs?! they seem to be the ones that appear the most

These are the fuckers. The trouble is, they're so bloody big and quick, I keep thinking I'm seeing mice out of the corner of my eyes.

I had one that looked roughly 2 inches long last night. I was screaming, banging the floor with a guest in the house. I felt ridiculous but I couldn't sleep with that in my bedroom. The reason for the floor banging was when I went to catch the aforementioned horrible spider, it ran towards me, then away and then when I approached it again, it bolted towards me again.

I'm going to try peppermint oil to see if it does the trick.

Notasmartcookie · 27/06/2022 02:04

@FavouritePi im glad it’s not just me🤣🤣 not a chance in hell I’m going to bed with one of them big bastards in the room hiding and waiting to crawl on my face whilst I’m asleep 🤣🤣🤣

fUNNYfACE36 · 27/06/2022 02:07

You make me angry . spiders are sensitive and fragile creatures which can do ýou ño harm.

Furries · 27/06/2022 02:29

Ugh, I HATE the big field/harvest spiders. I live rurally and in an old property, so get a few of them - none so far this summer though.

The spindly ones (small dot of a body, long, thin legs) are cellar spiders. My house is timber-framed and, when having repairs done, the guy told me that cellar spiders are great to have in a timber-framed building. So, I know where they all are and I leave them in peace. Actually, am sure I saw somewhere that they also kill of bigger spiders - not sure if I made that up to comfort myself, now off to google!

Furries · 27/06/2022 02:30

Yup - apparently cellar spiders will eat larger spiders! Go, spindly dudes, you are welcome in my house.

Schnauzersaremyheros · 27/06/2022 02:46

I love the spindly cellar spiders purely because they eat the giant hairy ones! I've got a cellar spider who has set up camp in my kitchen, and he is currently snacking on fruit flies 😁

Notasmartcookie · 27/06/2022 03:05

oh there’s one in my bathroom, he can stay

Sandinyourshoes · 27/06/2022 03:25

Just had to put out a fairly big brown one that I saw from the corner of my eye when reading my phone. The warmer weather seems to make them bolder. I had a couple of thick black ones hiding in the curtains a few weeks ago, they appeared separately within an hour of each other.
They give me the heeby jeebies - I don’t like turning the light off as they can creep in unseen. Can’t shake off the fear, been like this for decades.

AugustSeptemberOctober · 27/06/2022 06:18

This one is by far the biggest spider I've ever seen. It made me late for a doctor's appointment. And that's not a cup it's under, it's a bloody vase!

KangarooKenny · 27/06/2022 06:34

We had one last year the size of my hand, it was horrible. I don’t mind spiders usually, but that one gave me the creeps.

ObviouslyNotAFan · 27/06/2022 06:41

I've noticed this as well, so early in the year and so fecking HUGE. I don't mind a small one or a spindly one but it's the massive chunky heavy ones that I can't deal with.

Yesterday I was about 8 feet away from one and could see it moving it's pincer/claw things. That's how massive it was.

Hoardasurass · 27/06/2022 06:55

I currently have a huge 1 (its body is about an inch long) on my sitting room ceiling teasing the dog (world's best spider killer) but it's fine because it has to come down eventually and will be dead about 30 seconds after it does

PotatoFamily · 27/06/2022 07:01

What makes it worse, is the house spiders you see are males, running around looking for the GIANT female. She doesn’t move, you won’t see her, so she’s lurking in your house somewhere 😳

ThanksItHasPockets · 27/06/2022 07:15

Yes, spindly cellar spiders (pholcidae) eat house spiders. It seems improbable but I’ve seen it. They get caught in the webs.

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 27/06/2022 07:49

They eat them? Legolas is eating Gimli? No way! I'll be hoofing those skinny twats out the window from now on.

CanYouSeeMeFly · 27/06/2022 07:59

I had a horrific experience the other night when I was falling asleep in bed. I could hear a really loud scrambling noise and couldn't work out where it was coming from.

Imagine my shock to glance into a plastic bag with some books in by my bed and see the worlds biggest spider trapped inside, scraping at the sides of the bag to get out! 😱

Jeez that's a monster!

Vampirethriller · 27/06/2022 09:17

I let cellar spiders live in the house and they keep the big bastards out. Cellar ones just stick to their corner, do their thing, they're fine and they've all got names here. (René and Edith in the kitchen, Michelle of the Resistance in the living room, Frank and Betty in the bathroom.)

Knackeredbutnot · 27/06/2022 09:25

Last year I had a traumatic encounter with the biggest spider I have ever seen. I’m normally ok with putting a glass over/ putting them out but this was something else!
I was drying my hands and saw something black on the back of the hand towel. My brain went, ‘that’s a huge spider’ so I dropped the towel quickly onto the floor. I then started rapidly scanning the floor to check where it had fallen and I couldn’t see it anywhere.
I was beginning to think maybe it had been trick of the light when I glanced down and saw a massive spider on my t-shirt. Unfortunately, the movement of my head made it run and it was so fast, straight up my neck and onto my face!
I yelped, flicked it onto the floor, shut the bathroom door and went to find my husband. He thought I was overreacting, but then it wouldn’t fit under a pint glass(!) and he changed his tune.
I feel more jumpy about spiders now - but still don’t kill them!

WindyGlowers · 27/06/2022 09:27

Not at home yet but at work (castle) I had one the other day in my laundry bag. It was bigger than the cup I first tried to catch it under 😬
