To ask if you give teachers presents at end of term?

Not really an AIBU but curious to know.

When I was young I didn't really give my teachers presents at the end of the school year. My parents didnt have a lot of extra income so I completely understand. Lots of my classmates did every year and I think I gave my Primary 7 teacher a gift as she had been very special to me.

DS1 finishes school next week (primary one) and I was thinking of sending him in with a small thank you gift for his teacher as she really helped him settle in with school and push him to excel. Is this still something that's done?

No. In my eldest reception year one of the mums organised a collection with a £10 'suggested donation' and I went along with that but we haven't done presents since. Last year I emailed the head with glowing praise for how my dcs teachers had been throughout the year, I'll do the same this year. Not sure it achieves anything though! The kids write cards too.

That's the best gift.

I’m a teacher. I appreciate ALL gifts. I can tell you which child gave me which cup and I use them all. I have a cup from 30 years ago and the pupil died, sadly. I know his mum appreciates the fact that I kept it.

I always wonder why parents club together and buy those frames with every child in the class's name on, usually in a scrabble type way. Lovely thought in theory but I doubt the teacher wants that, to them it's just another class of many that they will teach over the years!

I give a £20 John Lewis voucher and a small box of chocolates, usually Green & Blacks mini selection. I have twins so I spend accordingly for the gift.

Thanks for all your responses.

I was only thinking of giving her a little relaxing care package of sorts (chocolate, biscuits, face mask, etc) and get DS to write a little card/send her my thanks. I can't say it's something I would routinely do every year but as it was his first year at school I feel as though she had a lot to do with how well he settled and I really appreciated her willingness to work with me to challenge him.

I always see plenty of Best Teacher Ever mugs in my local thrift shop.

At my DCs' school the class parents used to do a collection and the teachers got Visa gift cards. I liked this idea as it saved me a lot of time and money.

Before that, people used to give individual gifts. One year I sent a gift card with a substantial value to a book shop to a particular teacher, in a card DD2 had written herself. DD forgot an item in the classroom on the last day and I asked the teacher, who was at the door smiling and seeing the kids off to the parents, if I could run up to the classroom and grab it. Up I went. In the bin by the teacher's desk I spotted the unopened envelope with the card and gift card inside, along with wrapping paper and several other unopened cards. I retrieved it and took it home with me. The two faced cow...

I always buy wine for all the teachers/Ta's.
Usually ends up being about ten bottles, I wait till sainsburys has their 25% off six bottles and get an extra 10% on my sisters staff discount so we get decent bottles for a good price.
I know not everyone will like the wine but I'm thinking it's easy to regift and keeps for ages whereas flowers/chocolates have a shorter shelf life.

No I never bother.
