Should I take dog to emergency vets?

Dog ate a dead eel on the riverbank this morning. Mixed advice on google … I assumed she’d be fine but I’ve seen some advice saying they’re toxic?! (Although not sure if that was uk)

should I call emergency vets or am I over-reacting?

yabu - she’ll be fine
YANBU - get her to vets

dh is reluctant to take her to vets as he said she’s always eating dead animals which she is to be fair … but an eel?

I’d wait and see. Not sure why eel is more dangerous to you than, say dead rabbit?

I don’t know, I just imagine them to be poisonous for some reason!

This could be a phone call to the vet - they'll tell you if you need to come in.

I'd call the vet and just get their opinion. They may well just tell you to keep an eye on your dog and go in if you notice any changes. Id feel awful if I didn't at least call and my dog got dangerously sick - not saying that that could even happen in this instance, I don't know!

Yes just call the vet for some advice.although londoners have eaten jellied eels yuck!for years .as a child in london remember heaving when given one to eat .worst thing I have had the misfortune to eat!

Ring the vet !

dottiedodah · 26/06/2022 09:32

Sorry just noticed eels can be toxic for dogs .maybe pop her down for some help

notapizzaeater · 26/06/2022 09:34

Has your dog insurance got a vet line .? Ours does maybe try them first

RedCarsGoFaster · 26/06/2022 09:34

Another vote for phone and ask.

Our grotbag ate a chunk of very dead spider crab on the beach years ago and was a very sick dog for a few weeks - the diarrhoea was horrific the poor thing.

She's not really been one to eat dead things since then. Cat poo is apparently amazing though. 🙄

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 26/06/2022 09:34

Just phone, they don't charge for that and they aren't going to get you to bring the dog in if it's fine, ruins their weekend and wastes time for an actual emergency.

I think you need to call. I have just read that eel blood is toxic but cooking eliminates the toxins, obviously this was an uncooked one so yes I would call.

NoSquirrels · 26/06/2022 09:53

Our vet would strongly prefer you call the out of hours line and let them decide if it’s worthy of a trip in.

AtrociousCircumstance · 26/06/2022 09:56

Call them.
