I'd also say that looks normal, I've had six go through it and four looked like that, one had about four spots and the other ended up in hospital. The hospital one has no unspotty skin, and couldn't swallow as it was all in the mouth

Ds was like that, couldn't see normal skin for pox on his face!

EatYourVegetables · 26/06/2022 09:37

This looks like normal CP to
me.

Calamine lotion to stop itching. Paracetamol, not ibuprofen. As much TV as he wants and whatever food he can handle, even if it’s 3 days of milk and ice cream only. It will only be like this for a short time, after 3 days the spots will still be there but the fever and general misery will go away.

cottagegardenflower · 26/06/2022 09:46

If he has spots in his eyes he has to see the GP. As you know CP can cause scarring and in RARE cases can damage the cornea in the eye. He needs anti viral eye drops I think. Sorry can't remember actual treatment options, but it must be treated.

jeaux90 · 26/06/2022 09:53

Definitely use an antihistamine with pain killers it's helps the itching but it looks like a normal case.

AclowncalledAlice · 26/06/2022 10:00

When DD had it aged 4 it was in her ears, eyes and mouth as well as all over her face and body. Although it looks bad I would consider your Dc's case "normal".

Sarah180818 · 26/06/2022 10:15

My son currently has it as well and is much worse. Literally covered everywhere! Starting to pull round though. It's amazing what a difference even a couple of days makes.

RoundaboutRacer · 26/06/2022 10:29

Looks pretty average in my experience. My DC had a lot more spots and a couple of very miserable/uncomfortable days but all the CP products took the edge off enough along with medication, oat baths and lots of TV for us to get through them.

Don't panic. They bounce back fast. But it is truly horrible them being so uncomfortable and not being able to fix it.

ManateeFair · 26/06/2022 10:44

That’s totally normal for chickenpox. If you’ve only ever seen very mild cases I can see why you’re alarmed, but the number of spots on your little boy is pretty average. I’ve seen way, way worse than that, honestly. (I had it when I was five or six and I was much, much spottier - I had them inside my nose, eyelids, private bits, the lot!)

It’s horrible to watch a kid feeling rotten and covered in spots, but this isn’t unusual and he will bounce back in no time. Try not to worry and just do the usual soothing stuff for the itching and the usual Calpol or whatever for a temperature. You just have to let it run its course.

HairyScaryMonster · 26/06/2022 13:13

My friend went to the gp when the pox got in the eyes and was prescribed something. Id ring 111 for an out of hours appt

Littleraindrop15 · 26/06/2022 14:03

camomile lotion was a god send to us but it will pass and Stay strong x

champagnesocialist11 · 26/06/2022 14:07

Don't give ibuprofen

SQLserved · 26/06/2022 14:16

chickenpoxson · 26/06/2022 08:36

Thank you so much I feel so grateful for the reassurance I'm still on hold to 111

I've done it all incl poxcim, virasoothe
Baths with oats and paracetamol and anti histamines round the clock

It's in his eyes my heart is breaking for him he is so so sad
He is just laying there in shock and crying

What about the baby? She is eating and drinking as normal

“It's in his eyes”

Chickenpox in the eyes can be serious, you are right to get him seen.

Floralnomad · 26/06/2022 14:24

Looks like a normal CP case to me just slather him in calamine lotion ..

Floralnomad · 26/06/2022 14:34

Sorry didn’t see the bit about his eyes - get that checked as they can give him drops just to add to the general misery ☹️

My DN had it a few weeks ago, her spots were much worse bigger and bleeding but she had eczema and other skin problems which didn't help. Calamine lotion, fluids, ice lollies etc just to get him fluids into him, paracetamol as needed, keep an eye on temperature my DN was hospitalised as her temp wasn't coming down from 40.

I wish chicken pox want as easily dismissed. I was made to feel like I was being PFB when I had DS vaccinated

This definitely.
my elder DS had horrendous spots and skin issues with it. Sadly left some scarring (adult now and very faint) though not too bad. He has eczema
younger DS spots very minimal discomfort and no scarring.
a friends dc were same - my small sample group indicates that eczema might make the skin reaction worse.

babysoupdragon2 · 26/06/2022 14:59

You CAN give ibuprofen if pain and fever are severe, just talk with a medical professional first.

Ibuprofen was the only thing that brought DDs temperature down and the pain from the spots in her mouth down to a level where I could get her to eat or drink. She would otherwise have been admitted.

Giving ibuprofen with chicken pox carries a tiny, tiny risk of developing necrotising fasciitis. Obviously you want to avoid this but it's all about balancing risk.

1VY · 26/06/2022 15:07

Im going to disagree with almost everyone else here @chickenpoxson

If your child is constantly distressed and lethargic then you need medical advice. If he doesn’t perk up with the offer of an ice lolly or Peppa Peg then it’s time to seek help.

millymollymoomoo · 26/06/2022 15:18

Doesn’t look particularly bad to me from my own experience with my children who were 1 and 2 when they had it
it is utterly miserable for them
just keep fluids up ( use calpol syringe to give water if they’re not drinking well) and the itching will die down in a few days

frazzledasarock · 26/06/2022 15:26

My eldest had chickenpox like that it was everywhere and awful for her.

I gave her baths with bicarb soda in them, soothed itching and helped speed up the spots drying out.

m hope your son is better soon.

viques · 26/06/2022 15:37

It’s a horrible illness. Keep them well away from older people and people with reduced immunities. Have you had it yourself OP, or have you had the jab? If not they are likely to pass it on to you (voice of experience, thanks a bunch DD!) and it is a very nasty thing to have as an adult.

Zippy1510 · 26/06/2022 15:45

Im in the same position. DS4 is covered from head to toe. Very similar to your DS. Mostly on his face and scalp and a 40c fever. DD15 months only has a few spots and a mild fever. Poor DS is so uncomfortable and upset at how he looks. We are doing calpol, piriton, poxcillin, oat baths, chalmomile cream. We are on day 5 now and day 3 was the worst. I’m now moving onto mederma to reduce scarring and have purchases some solutions for scars. It’s horrible.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 26/06/2022 15:53

My dd had it at 6 months and it was much worse than that. Much. I took her to the drs and they said it wasn’t the worst and within the range of normal. Horrible but it will pass within a few days. You e already been given some good advice on this thread.

CoastalWave · 26/06/2022 15:56

Looks normal to me - that's exactly how my 13 month old was. It was upsetting at the time though. 2 yr old daughter didn't have anywhere near as many.

No Ibuprofen! (I assume you know that, I didn't and ended up with it much worse)

Honestly. That's NORMAL chickenpox.

334bu · 26/06/2022 16:00

Fact that it is in his eyes is the thing to stress to 111 as that should be checked out.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 26/06/2022 16:00

I should add that I had 3dc with it at different stages over a period of three weeks and it was very hard. You will get through it though! Take it very easy. Leave the housework, get takeout, whatever you need to get you through.
