To think America is heading towards a new civil war?

The divisions that were stirred up, and made legimate by the Trump governence, are making American politics very scary. It's scary because the USA has so much power and wealth, so how would the rest of Western democracy carry on if the USA was fighting within itself?

Yes I pondered this earlier - Dh said the latest ruling would only affect the 'crazy' states but my answer was then what happens when all the semi sane people leave the crazy states and they just become worse and worse eventually the divisions between states will become difficult to maintain within the 1 nation.

I wouldn't be surprised. But don't think it would be a binary Conflict. So many factions involved

I don't think there will be out and out civil war anytime soon. It'll just keep going how things have been going for the last few decades, smart people will leave red states and move to blue states, the democrats will pile up votes where they already win, lose votes in places where they already lose, and you'll end up with Republicans winning elections on less than 40% of the popular vote.

I think this but America will be fundamentally weakened.

? You do know that the number of electoral votes a State gets depends on its population? So the scenario you outline would not happen if the blue states became significantly more populous than the red states?

Civil war isn’t going to happen in the USA. They’re nowhere near it.

actiongirl1978 · 25/06/2022 19:37

It's all appalling. DD is considering college in the US (yes I do know how much it costs) and has said she is rethinking. How could she not.

I don't think civil war though. I think things will become normalised once the shock has worn off.

I think a lot of women will end up in jail for not obeying the law - judges not convicting women who've had abortions, protestors and violent protestors which end up in death.

"? You do know that the number of electoral votes a State gets depends on its population? So the scenario you outline would not happen if the blue states became significantly more populous than the red states?"

That's only true up to a point. California has about 80 times as many people as Wyoming, but gets 55 electoral votes to Wyoming's 3. So about 18 times as many.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/06/2022 19:40

I wouldn't have a clue, but I'd be really intrigued to know how a civil war would play out in a first world, G8 country in 2020. There's a book/film idea there.

And when it comes to the Senate they both get two seats, right? Even though California has 40 million people and Wyoming 600,000? I was shocked when I found that out. It seems like it’s the Senate that’s blocking a lot of sensible policies e.g. gun control.

And the Senate plays a key role in electing the Supreme Court.

@JesusInTheCabbageVan - it’s actually 2022, babes, not 2020! 😆

This reminds me of the scene in Bridesmaids when she has the wrong year (to Steve/Stove, the flight attendant)
