My neighbours have started putting rubbish in my bin

Hi
So I've recently moved house, and my neighbours overall seem ok.
I'm a single parent with one child and our council collects the recycling bin one week and the garden/ food waste the following week. Sometimes I only put my recycling out monthly because I don't always fill the bin 100% for both collections. Anyway the week before last I didn't put out my recycling because I was working 4 shifts back to back and i knew it wasn't full. Anyway two days later i went outside to put my recycling in the bin and it was almost full with minimal room for my stuff. What the actual? I'm really annoyed? My last house was a semi and my bins were kept at the back of the drive near the back door. I'm not used to this. I'm tempted to put a padlock on my bins and remove the padlock when I put the bins out on bin day. It's just I'm really careful as I've heard of people being fined when they've put the wrong stuff in.

Also if they'd asked I might have said ok this once. It just feels as though they think their entitled to use my bins

Is it one neighbour in particular?

dottypotter · 25/06/2022 17:59

Can't you talk to them.

cupcakedaisy · 25/06/2022 18:01

Padlock them, they will never get the message otherwise and continue to do what they want.

worraliberty · 25/06/2022 18:01

I'm tempted to put a padlock on my bins and remove the padlock when I put the bins out on bin day.

I take it you mean after you've told them to stop doing it?

44PumpLane · 25/06/2022 18:04

You can purchase bin locks that allow the bin lid to open when the bin lorry tips the bin- this would absolutely annoy the hell out of me on principal, like you say they could have asked!

AllFreeOwls · 25/06/2022 18:08

Look into a gravity bin lock.

coodawoodashooda · 25/06/2022 18:20

That would annoy me so much.

sleepymum50 · 25/06/2022 18:23

I once had an argument with a neighbour over this. I went out to put stuff in my recycling bin, to find it stuffed to the top. A really big box had been jammed in, and when I pulled it out, it was full of polystyrene chip boxes and loads of chips. They had also started putting their bins on my and my neighbours land because they were having work done.

The box had an address on it, so I put it and the chips at the end of his garden. I saw him inside his house and waved to him. He came out so I told him about his stuff in my bin, and also reminded him that the recycling doesn’t include polystyrene and chips.

I was honestly expecting a quick apology, but at first he said his wife had done it and it therefore was nothing to do with him. Then he started going on about how pathetic I was to make a big deal about it. So I made an even bigger deal about it, and told him not to put his bins on my land.

I probably sound like an arse, but I just know if it had been my husband instead of me, he’d have stayed perfectly polite.

StoneofDestiny · 25/06/2022 18:25

Padlock the bin

BMW6 · 25/06/2022 18:26

Get a gravity lock OP.

Dominuse · 25/06/2022 18:27

Can you put it out of the way

SmartCarDriver · 25/06/2022 18:29

Notice on the non, saying this belongs to 123 Avenue Road, please do not deposit your rubbish in it you cheeky fuckers

SmartCarDriver · 25/06/2022 18:29

*on the bin

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/06/2022 18:33

The problem with a gravity lock is this- some councils expect their bin men to inspect the contents of the bin before emptying. If they can’t do this due to a gravity lock being fitted, the bin men will refuse to empty it and put the sticker of doom on it.
pad locking it is ok, so long as it’s taken off before emptying so the bin police can check.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/06/2022 18:34

Padlock. Problem solved and you don't have to deal with your neighbours.

ComDummings · 25/06/2022 18:35

I would padlock it, yeah. Wouldn’t even waste my breath trying to speak to the cheeky fuckers.

girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 18:36

Have they been putting the wrong things in? If they're only doing it on the day before bin day it wouldn't bother me.

Littleemma82 · 25/06/2022 19:03

They did do it the day before, my point is I didn't put my bin out because I was working back to back shifts and it wasn't full 🙂

Littleemma82 · 25/06/2022 19:04

I had checked it a day earlier than they were due out

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 19:07

Ah I'd just ask them to put it out if they're going to put rubbish in it then personally, but I know lots of people on here are funny about bins

Ludo19 · 25/06/2022 19:10

Another one for a padlock. Mine are after I found full dog poo bags and a pizza box complete with pizza in my bin.

monicaandchandler · 25/06/2022 19:13

My single household neighbour filled half of my recycling bin with beer cans/bottles and a load of other stuff the day it was emptied knowing we are a 4 person household so pretty much fill our bin but she left a Amazon box with her address on it so I put it all in a bag she had also put in the bin with a not so polite note and she hasn't done it again :)

User354354 · 25/06/2022 19:33

Have you spoken to them ? Seems an easier fix than padlocks ect.

Littleemma82 · 26/06/2022 19:22

Trouble is they didn't have the courtesy to speak to me.
