Supermarket getting rid of changing rooms. AIBU

The Local Asda had a changing room as they sell clothes etc where you could try things on. Its gone now, dont think it was anything to do with Covid they just got rid of it and put some more stuff to sell in its place.

There are times you want to try something on and cant. If you sell clothes shouldnt you be able to try them on? What would happen if all shops that solds clothes got rid of their changing rooms? Surely this will lead to more people bringing stuff back too?

A lady was looking for the changing room today for her daughter to try something on and was told the changing rooms have gone. She said to her daughter you'll have to try this on over your clothes then. Not the same is it.

Bit cheeky to get rid of the changing rooms just so they can push more stuff. Has the person who made that decision never needed to try anything on then. Mad.

Yeah thats what I said?

perhaps you could pass it on then, that it was a bad move and they are losing custom.

It is frustrating.
If I wanted the hassle of returning things, I could shop on line, but I like to see that something fits / suits me / feels right before buying.

Even more frustrating is the charity shop they have opened in our High Street without a changing room. Just ridiculous.

Isseywith3witchycats · 25/06/2022 18:49

i was after some jeans the other week none in asda i liked and i wanted them for that night found some in sainsburys no changing room so i took them to the ladies toilets the beeper went off as i went in and no staff appeared so i went in tried them on liked them and bought them if someone had challenged me i would have said i havent walked out the shop without paying and not buying something that may not fit without trying on

iRun2eatCake · 25/06/2022 19:06

My Tesco has closed theirs. It was always my "go to" shop previously but not anymore.

I have purchased clothes and then tried them on in the toilet ... then returned the unsuitable one's.

Completely unhygienic and more work for the sales staff.

So many shops do online or click and collect now...like Primark...so l use them instead of Tesco now

DOBARDAN · 25/06/2022 19:11

I agree, it is very frustrating. It could be the changing rooms have gone because there were issues around them being mixed sex facilities, which became too troublesome for staff to manage. There have been incidents reported regarding Monsoon and Primark changing rooms (other shops too), some of which involved women being secretly filmed or having photos taken as they were getting undressed to try something on.

girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 19:15

I won't buy clothes if I can't try them on. I've bought lots of stuff from George in the past but will avoid it moving forward if our local Asda does the same.

FlimsySteve · 25/06/2022 19:15

As someone who worked in a supermarket, the changing rooms are not more hygienic than the toilets

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/06/2022 19:19

Yanbu

Just because the items are cheap, u have still probably forked out to get there. Or paid bus fare or parking or fuel or whatever. And the last thing ya wanna do is pay it all again twice to return it.

Asda was pretty good fir bras but ya wanna try them on. Especially as getting a fitting appointment is hard work sometimes and if it's for your dds you wanna make extra sure it fits properly.

I swear even 2 years on no one wants your custom. They have kept the closed changing rooms and virtual appointments or in store appointments. Had enough now. I just wanna go in Try on and buy what fits fir me akd my kids. I dont want to have to buy piles of stuff online or in.store then faff about returning. Honestly takes the piss. Not like the fact that there's less staff is reflected in the price is it. We pay the same or more than befire for half the service and to scan our bloody selves

viques · 25/06/2022 19:25

Buy a small tape measure , know your own measurements and measure the clothes. Not foolproof but stops a few disasters.

Derrymare · 25/06/2022 19:45

Covid has become an excuse for this now but really they are cutting down on staff.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 25/06/2022 19:55

If you think changing rooms are in any way hygienic neither you nor anyone close to you has worket retail Envy

People leave piles of tried on clothes covered in every bodily fluid or waste you can think of. Or their own soiled clothes from "accidents" and they leave in the new ones. Same with bra switching, old for new without paying, it's seriously grim.
For the above reasons i absolutely agree with doing away with changing rooms, the minority spoil it for the majority, nobody deserves having to clean that up for probably minimum wage.

There's more room to manoeuvre for one in a changing room.

You need to try bras on they are all different. A bra is not just something you can sell like a bag of sugar. Bra fitters are also trained to fit a bra.

Think supermarkets are missing a trick. Debenham have closed there is a gap in the market for bra fitting.

God yes. VS is so expensive, m&s is renowned fir being shit for bra fitting, Debenham is shut, JL is expensive too, and when children grow so quickly, somewhere like asda or sainsbury could have loads of business for basics such as underwear if they played it right.

Of course its not just clothes it's everything
The public are being played fir mugs right now. We are literally paying for the privilege of doing everyone else's job for them 🙄.

Then they wonder why sales are down.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/06/2022 22:31

Course also in true British fashion we are memat to feel sorry for staff having to do their jobs. And be grateful we can alleviate the workload.

I say that as someone who works in retail themselves, who understands the excessive demands that are creeping up on us at no extra cost to the company. But when we are talking basics such as supervising a changing room or manning a til we really should not be letting companies off the hook

RampantIvy · 25/06/2022 22:37

I won't buy clothes I can't try on. I don't have the time to traipse backwards and forwards to supermarkets. It's a 22 mile round trip for me to get to Sainsburys, so there is the cost of fuel as well.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 25/06/2022 22:53

More and more people are doing click and collect. Most of them have no problem with coming in to return items back through the click and collect so having no interaction with a colleague at all. Our changing rooms went at the start of covid but no hours have been lost.

No problem? Maybe they had no choice.

Reasons I turned more to online and click and collect were/are, lack of stock In store. I mean if you are buying your child pants you want more than 1 2 pack in the right size.

All staff allocated to something other than staffing a til. You cant take clothes with security tags through a self service. I'm not waiting behind 4 lots of trollies because god forbid more than one till is actually open.

No one seems to give a shit any more and I don't want floor clothes thanks.

Completey fed up with paying fir parking or for bus fare only to discover it was a completely wasted trip.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/06/2022 23:12

You only get your parking money back if u spend 5 pounds or more in some supermarkets so you either pay 2 pounds amd leave empty handed or buy 5 pounds worth of stuff you don't want to get 2 pounds back ajd still leave without what u went for

sweeneytoddsrazor · 25/06/2022 23:44

You can take clothing through self scan, there is always someone there to remove the tags. As to no choice with the click and collect, maybe thats so on occasion but it isn't just clothes it is home items, sports items as well and also not just the supermarket clothes. Our click and collect is a number of different retailers not just our own stock,. People choose to have it sent to their local supermarket, collect it whilst shopping then return it next time they are in shopping.

Marvellousmadness · 25/06/2022 23:54

Yabu. Its a supermarket.

Of course you can take clothes with tags through self service check outs. Don't be so ridiculous.

Alcohol, clothes, medicines and pretty much everything else can be taken through self service and the scan and go tills. I do it all of the time.

FemmeNatal · 26/06/2022 00:21

dottypotter · 25/06/2022 15:36

get rid of staff you mean. Perhaps they shouldnt sell clothes if they cant provide somewhere for them to be tried on.

Why not? Why stop selling to people who either know their size or are happy to take it home to try?

Keladrythesaviour · 26/06/2022 00:26

Grrr I had this today in tescos. I would normally just not buy them and they can lose the sale. as it was I really needed a blouse for work so I've bought two. But I need to return both as they're too big. So they will have to process that refund for me.

Yabu. Its a supermarket.

Stick to selling tins of beans and bags of sugar then.
