Do I keep these trousers to inspire me to lose weight?

I have always been a size 10-12 apple shape but since turning 40 (now 43) I've been a 12 and then since lockdown 12 has started to feel uncomfortable.

I have no bottom to speak of and so size 14 trousers don't fit. I have relied on elasticated waists and vanity sizing size 12s that are big.

I ordered some walking trousers for an upcoming trip that said 'stretch'. They fit almost exactly cutting in slightly and definitely not as comfortable as I'd like. They are lovely and lightweight and would be great if I lost some flab off my middle.

So my AIBU is: should I keep the walking trousers to remind me to diet between now and the end of August when I need those pants?

I'm am no good at strict diets. I swim once a week and 2 or 3 sessions of torture pilates. I have previously been inspired by a pair of fat face size 10 shorts to go low carb and booze and sugar free for a month with some success. I fitted back into the shorts on holiday. Those shorts have since been given away. If I accept I'm not fitting into size 12 and give up on losing weight I'm just going to get fatter and I don't want that.

YANBU - keep the pants and remind yourself to recover your waist.

YABU - send the pants back, you're just going to waste money.

TIA!

Keep ‘em and try them every week. I’m currently wearing some Boden cropped jeans that are much too tight to make me eat less (!)

ZenNudist · 24/06/2022 20:31

I have no shortage of clothes that don't fit.

Dammit I need to be inspired by the diet threads. I'm in awe of anyone who can stick to a strict diet.

I did the same with some work trousers that were a size too small. It’s been about 5 years and the tag is still on them 🤣

junebirthdaygirl · 24/06/2022 20:39

If you are going on a walking trip can you do loads of walking between now and then, drink lots of water and cut out junk..you could fit those jeans

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 20:43

I've got lots of pants I've kept that don't fit. They're taking up quite a lot of room now but as I refuse to buy trousers that do fit, that's not a big problem. The problem is I can't go out anywhere because I have no clothes that I can get into!
Send them back and buy something you can wear and look good in. Challenge yourself to get them to hang on you instead. At least you'll look good whilst your diet is failing! (Sorry.)

I was nearly the same situation as you including the sizing (I’m similar age)

i went on low carb bootcamp, lost a few kilograms and feel better for it.
My ribcage seems different shape since I had DC so no changing sizes there

I went size down in my lower body though.

The only part I didn’t lose any fat are my arms🤷‍♀️🙄

ZenNudist · 24/06/2022 21:01

I am liking @FrenchBoule thinspiration but drawn to @LetitiaLeghorn compromise. Just tried them on again and they still dont fit well. Thats despite giving up cake for nearly 24 hours now!

No.

lljkk · 24/06/2022 21:41

Won't it just depress you & make you feel like a failure every time you encounter them & they still don't fit?

Knittedfairies · 24/06/2022 21:58

Send them back and buy some that fit. If you do lose weight, they be a little more generous. If you don't, the trousers will still be comfortable for your walking holiday.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/06/2022 22:05

Send them back and treat yourself to some trousers that fit.

However, if you already have other clothes you want to get into, then hang them somewhere you can see them as permanent inspiration for weight loss.

balalake · 24/06/2022 22:07

Keep the trousers.

One of the reasons I hate jogging bottoms (especially on men) is that it means that someone can be in denial about weight gain and have less incentive to do something about it.

seaUrchinOne · 24/06/2022 22:08

YANBU keep them, have a goal to wear them.

catandcoffee · 24/06/2022 22:14

keep them and wear them every day.
Feeling the waistband cutting in to your skin, will give you the incentive to eat less crap....it worked for me .
