To get a second opinion on my sons back - photos attached

My son is 15. For the last year when I see my son without a top on I think his back doesn’t look quite right. His lower backs dips right in and his shoulder blades stick right out. I have taken him to the GP but he dismissed my concerns as my son is not in pain. Just wondering if he could have kyphosis. Anyone else think his back doesn’t look right or is it just because he is so skinny.

He looks quite round shouldered. Can he stand up straight?

CharSiu · 24/06/2022 10:16

Go to an osteopath, not a chiropractor.

I have a spinal scoliosis and slightly hyper mobile joints and had my DS checked out when he was about 13. Now I’m older my spine causes issues if I had been given an insert in my shoe when young those issues would be not as bad. It cost £60 for a consult.

I have sent you a private message

Look up kyphosis and scapula wing

MochaShots · 24/06/2022 10:25

Just seen that you mentioned kyphosis. My son has this plus scapula wing. He is currently on the NHS waiting list.

This seems very familiar. I think you've posted about this before?

Lockheart · 24/06/2022 10:26

Please don't take medical advice or seek diagnoses from strangers on the internet. Get a second opinion from a real life doctor.

So what if she has? Maybe she didn’t get many replies last time.

BenchOfCompany · 24/06/2022 10:32

Definitely seek a second opinion from either a different GP or better still an osteopath. Looking at him would be enough for me to ask questions. Good that he isn't in any pain though.

CherryReid · 24/06/2022 10:34

I have a scoliosis - I'm in my 60s by the way. It's a thing some people have and usually isn't treated.
My ribs stick out at one side, one shoulder more forward than the other, rounded shoulders - it showed in a chest X-ray. But there are exercises he could do if you look on YouTube. I will pm some that I do as I don't have the knowledge to be giving recommendations!
I suspect the doc didn't deem it serious enough to warrant an op ( like ? Princess Beatrice)

AleynEivlys · 24/06/2022 10:49

Looks like kyphosis and/or lumbar hyperlordosis.

I've posted about this recently, but may as well say it again! My daughter goes to a Scoliosis SOS clinic for postural correction and pre-scoliotic spine caused by bad posture. She too had winged scapulae and a rounded upper back. She doesn't anymore (she's nearly 8).

Not saying your son has scoliosis, but that isn't the only thing they treat.

If you can afford it, it's definitely worth looking into, or something similar. There are simple exercises that can fix this problem at his age and help him avoid problems such as pain, wear and tear etc. in the future.

I've included a picture of my daughter when she started vs now to show what can be achieved.

What's did the GP say?

lolil · 24/06/2022 10:56

Oh ignore me I see it the GP was crap Blush

User3568975431146 · 24/06/2022 11:02

I remember when you posted before about this with pictures.

The advice then was to go to the gp because it's obviously not right and needs to be treated.

Did you contact your gp?

Notagoodtime · 24/06/2022 11:08

Yes as my post above explains , my GP didn’t think it needed further investigation as no discomfort

I'd see a physiotherapist - a good one. If it's down to posture they'll work with him to strengthen his back which will improve it. If it's anything more they'll say and can refer for xrays etc.

Hi @MochaShots . Can I ask how old your son is and how he got diagnosed please

OP posts:
MochaShots · 26/06/2022 22:54

Hi, sorry for late reply. He is 20, but was diagnosed at 17. Covid meant that his appointments were constantly rescheduled, and then when he hit 18 he had to re refer as he was classed as an adult.

It causes him some discomfort, but he can handle it. It's more that he feels extremely conscious of his appearance.

I hope you manage to get the help they need.

MochaShots · 26/06/2022 22:56

To add.. I too had a battle getting the GP to take it serious. He was referred to a team (I can't remember who, but will sort through paperwork and let you know) and they officially diagnosed him. We still don't know what they will offer him until his next appointment.

Panic71 · 30/12/2022 22:23

How are you getting on?
