3yo sucking in tummy and neck when breathing...

Currently sat in A&e after being bought by ambulance. DS has had a cough all week, also has asthma. Called 111 tonight as he was really sucking in his ribs and neck when breathing. Have him his inhaler but it made no difference.

He seems fine in himself apart from a temperature though. Just wondering has anyone else's little on had this and what happened in hospital? Is he likely just to be looked at then sent home if he's fine apart from his breathing?

Yes, my three year old has been admitted twice and in for monitoring a few other times. He now has a brown inhaler twice a day and a blue inhaler for when he has a cold. Since having the brown inhaler (almost a year) we haven't needed to take him in.

Last time he was admitted he had a nebuliser which perked him up but then his oxygen levels fell again and it was the middle of the night by then, so they admitted us and put him on oxygen all night. I stayed and slept in his room, where the machine went off to alert me if he moved and wasn't getting the oxygen (he wouldn't tolerate the mask on his face so they just put it as close as possible). I didn't get much sleep!

The next day he seemed much better but his oxygen levels fell again when he napped, so they gave him oral steroids and kept him in another night without the oxygen but with hourly obs. The steroids really helped and he was out the next day.

We have an oximeter at home now which is really useful for knowing whether to worry or not. It's difficult to get a reading but the relief when you see 98/99!
