Weird one but I was called this today.. how would you feel about being called ‘missy’? Especially by somebody who was older than you

Depends on the context

MistyRuins · 23/06/2022 20:51

Better from someone older (so basically suggesting you are youthful) than from someone younger, I would have thought.

But yeah, depends on context.

MistyRuins · 23/06/2022 20:52

Although I know someone called Missy (nickname for Melissa), so my initial thought would be that they'd gotten us confused.

MintyGreenDreams · 23/06/2022 20:53

For someone to not sound patronising I'd hope they were at least 40 yrs older than me

Charlottemh · 23/06/2022 20:59

It is one of my pet peeves! So patronising

Allyouneedisloveandacat2 · 23/06/2022 21:03

Thank you for the responses. The context is the man I am dating who is quite a bit older than me called it me today so I wondered what to think of it!

ewwwww!! In the context of a date it would give me the ick.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/06/2022 21:06

One of my friends called her daughter Missy Confused

FOJN · 23/06/2022 21:06

Was it a tongue in cheek way of referencing your age difference? If he used it seriously I'd be showing him the door.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/06/2022 21:08

Oh Jesus, no.

In one of Sheryl Sandberg’s books she tells a story about her working class Jewish granny’s brothers being called by their names - all the girls were just generically called Missy, because they didn’t matter.

He might not mean a thing by it. But be clear he cannot say it again.

worraliberty · 23/06/2022 21:09

Bleurgh! In the context of dating?

How has your vagina not shriveled up fallen off?

Georgeskitchen · 23/06/2022 21:18

Maybe he meant it in an affectionate way

My pet hate is being called "love" by teenage girls 🤮🤮

2bazookas · 23/06/2022 21:32

Years ago, an elderly Scottish farmer neighbour used to address me as Mistress. Formal courtesy to a married lady from a generation who never first-named acquaintances.

I really like that.

Not sure about Missy though TBH, don't think I'd like it from a date, except as perhaps a one off and very obvious joke.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/06/2022 21:38

My parents occasionally call me that, in a lighthearted way. A friend calling me that ironically, fine.

Anyone else calling me that can fuck off.
