That was on booking. Com. 2 adults 3 children October half term.
How the hell do normal people afford a couple of weeks away in the summer?

Our children have never been on a plane (oldest 15). Sounds daft but want to go somewhere cheap just so that we can take them on their first flight! Any ideas for a cheap long weekend, October half term?

Dublin hotels are extortionate at the moment. I saw a clip with an MP saying a resident who wanted to see a band said it was cheaper to fly to England to see them, rather than stay in Dublin and get a hotel!

DownNative · 23/06/2022 16:34

Belfast has a range of things for families and is significantly cheaper than Dublin. If your time allows, you could hire a car to drive to Dublin for shopping and back again.

Skelligsfeathers · 23/06/2022 16:36

What's cheap? Give me a budget and dates?

Ahgoonyegirlye · 23/06/2022 16:37

Christ! Go to Belfast, it’s a fantastic city for families, loads to do and not expensive at all. Even in the swankiest of hotels. Things like museums are sooo cheap, or free, it’s walkable, super kid friendly, and the people are lovely. Plus it’s not over run with English stag parties like Dublin, or annoying Americans looking for their ‘roots’!

Bonheurdupasse · 23/06/2022 16:37

Apparently lots of the hotels are filled with refugees so the prices of the remaining ones are huge.

CatchingSocks · 23/06/2022 16:38

Maybe focus on the actual trip rather than the plane, given their generation urgently need to stop flying if plane Earth is going to survive.

Going on a short haul flight for the sake of it is mad, you'll double your carbon footprint for the year just to be miserable 😩 on easy jet!

Halloween in HUGE in Northern Ireland By the way - so lots on and free firework
dispays etc. and if you are desperate to get to Dublin it’s about an hour and a half away y train or driving. Though honestly, I’d give it a serve at half term…

IcecreamForAlcohol · 23/06/2022 16:39

Amsterdam, Brussels, Cork, Paris are all relatively short flights, as well as the already mentioned Belfast.

I visited Dublin in 2015 and was told stag parties were banned from the bars there.

IcecreamForAlcohol · 23/06/2022 16:40

Also, Spain and Portugal are a lot cheaper than Northern Europe.

We are going to Portugal for 10 days at the end of August. £1,250 for nice hotel and flights, bed and breakfast. Just DD and I.

Awakeupnorth · 23/06/2022 16:42

Hostels / independent hostels - some will offer family rooms, or some use of a six bedded dorm.

I'd also be questioning using air travel for the foreseeable future.

MayDaze · 23/06/2022 16:44

Have you thought of just outside of Dublin and use public transport to visit the city? Or get the ferry across and take the car, frees you up to stay further afield.

I went to Dublin for my 21st many moons ago and it was incredibly expensive then (2000)

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 23/06/2022 16:45

I’m not convinced OPs first flight in 15 years means she’s solely responsible for climate change.

fwiw, I’d pick Belfast over Dublin any day! 😍 hope you find yourself a bargain.

soberfabulous · 23/06/2022 16:47

What about jersey in the channel islands? Very short flights, gorgeous with lovely beaches.

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 23/06/2022 16:48

Dublin is NOT cheap, it's like all capital cities - expensive!

If all you want is to fly somewhere don't pick Dublin.

Ohthatsexciting · 23/06/2022 16:48

You have never take your children abroad and eldest 15… and you think Dubai would be a good place to go???!

Keep it simple, not to far and beautiful. Menorca

Ohthatsexciting · 23/06/2022 16:48

Oh please please please don’t go to Dublin. Please

Ahgoonyegirlye · 23/06/2022 16:49

‘I visited Dublin in 2015 and was told stag parties were banned from the bars there’

Not true unfortunately, the city is over run with hens and stags although the PR machine is working hard to try to convince tourists otherwise. You can’t actually ‘ban’ grps if people from coming to a city, can you…

Ohthatsexciting · 23/06/2022 16:49

go on the threads about “most disappointing cities you’ve been to”

and Dublin dominates

with good reason

Perpop · 23/06/2022 16:50

Another Belfast recommendation! Friendly, kid friendly, nice pubs, nice parks, nice walks, nice beaches, good music!

redwaterbottle · 23/06/2022 16:51

Another Belfast recommendation! There's more to do imo and it's cleaner, friendlier and cheaper.

Did you misread the destination or is this a typo...?

I heard that also but I think it was Rome that they said was cheaper. It is insane at the moment and I live here and love it but jeez, they really are taking the mick.

RunSeaSurf · 23/06/2022 16:54

Dublin is really not all that. You can do far better.
