Mirena coil poll

ValenTeeeeee · 23/06/2022 11:13

YANBU - Being on the Mirena is/was a positive experience with no or few side effects (e.g. helped with heavy periods or as part of a HRT and peri / Meno management)

YABU - Being on the Mirena caused too many side effects and was / is not worth it for me.

I am trying to make up my mind, as my GP has suggested the Mirena to tackle my extremely heavy periods but I am reading some many negative stories about weight gain, anxiety and even suicidal ideation, as well as putting it in and taking it out being very painful so am hugely torn.

Please help me decide💐

Difficult first 6 months with sporadic bleeding then nothing.....

I love it amazing during menopause not having to worry about heavy flooding

Thank you everyone! It looks like the majority have had a good experience but when it doesn't work it's really detrimental to women's wellbeing. It's a gamble and I just don't know! I might first try losing some weight, getting fit and eating a more balanced diet but with iron levels at 4, I am on supplements and don't know how much more of these horrendous periods I can take.

Do you actually feel the coil when you go about your everyday business?

YANBU can't vote on the app.

Love mine I've had 3. No side effects, no periods, no real weight gain. My last one is coming out next summer and I am dreading it!

Mines great, had it for 10 years, no periods and no weight gain. I have friends who haven’t had as good as an experience but definitely worth a try. Make sure you get it inserted by someone who does loads of them, it’s never really been worse than a smear for me but I’ve always gone to the Dr /nurse who does them all.

Brushteethwashface · 23/06/2022 18:53

No can’t feel at all, think you’re supposed to check the strings but I don’t

Trainfromredhill · 23/06/2022 18:56

I love my coil. Hubby loves it too (no condoms). It’s due for replacement in dec. literally love it.

TwoBlueFish · 23/06/2022 18:57

I’m somewhere in the middle. Had the coil for about 2 years, worked fine, not particularly painful to put in, didn’t stop periods but all ok. Then I started bleeding at odd times and then all the time and my coil expelled itself along with some clots.

I was offered another one but couldn’t trust it as what would happen if it was expelled again and I didn’t realise, I absolutely didn’t want any more kids. I continued to bleed for the next year and eventually had a hysterectomy.

Mirena was amazing for me. I was very sceptical as I’d read all the horror stories but the GP went through all the options with me and it was basically the best one. So I gave it a try thinking, well I’ll get it taken out if it doesn’t suit. Well it’s been 5 years and I couldn’t be without it!
I had it put in during my period which is apparently easier if messier and had a bit of mild cramping. But was still fine to take 1yo DS home on the bus afterwords! I have the odd, very light period which need about 3 panty liners. Whereas previously I was flooding through sanitary pads in 30 mins.
hope you get the help you need anyway.

Policyschmolicy · 23/06/2022 19:17

Mirena has been great for me - 5 years free from periods, no fuss. However, mine is currently stuck, embedded in the uterus wall, and I am waiting for a GA to have it removed and replaced. I’ve had three different people try and get it out, but the best guess is that it perforated the uterus wall around the time it was put in, most likely as a result of increased risk related to the fact I was breastfeeding.

meganorks · 23/06/2022 19:23

Mine was very painful going in (apparently I have a tilted cervix!). I did then feel bloated for quite a while (a few months I think - I can't really remember now). I was getting to a stage where I wondered if I should have it removed but then the bloated feeling stopped. I stopped having periods (only very rare spotting). I'm due to have it out next year and will replace it. But I'm hoping the side effects were just first time round....

Caterina99 · 23/06/2022 19:24

I’ve had zero issues with it and it’s been 4 years. I get 1-2 days of light spotting for my period which I don’t track at all, but I think is vaguely monthly (like don’t even use a pad level light) and maybe every few months I might feel slightly crampy one day. I didn’t have particularly heavy periods before, but nowhere near this light.

Can’t feel it at all. I’ve no idea what I’m meant to do with checking strings, but I don’t do anything and I’ve never felt a string ever. At a recent smear test the nurse mentioned the strings looked just fine, so they’re clearly there!

Weight could be lower, but that’s probably the too much food and not enough exercise

Great for me!
