Nursery fees increase

Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 06:50

My nursery have written to me to say that they are increasing their fees by an extra £5 per day due to “cost of energy”.

When we add it up, because of the number of kids we have there and days it’s going to cost us over £150 extra a month!

Surely this is very unreasonable? We are struggling as it is.

my cost of energy has gone up too but my salary remains still. I’m pissed off too because this extra cash won’t be going to the staff… it’s going to energy companies.

should I just suck it up or can I say anything. I only have a few months left til we leave for school.

How else would you like them to cover their rising costs? Many childcare providers are working on very tight margins before the cost of everything started going up.

it’s far from ideal but sometimes needs must.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/06/2022 06:56

Don’t see how you saying anything will make a jot of difference. It sucks, it sucks just as much that food has gone up but you aren’t having a word with mr sainsburys?

HairyToity · 23/06/2022 07:01

It's not for much longer. Annoying for you.

I've had to find a different holiday club, as previous one has put the prices up.

Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:01

I guess my only comment is it’s summer. I’m not sure why I need to pay for extra energy.

I’m not angry at nursery… I’m angry at this whole situation. We earn decent money yet we are struggling more than we should be. So far this month… my mortgage is up £100 a month (fixed again but interest rates higher), car insurance up by £75, and now this! We can’t keep up with the rise of everything. we’ve tried to arrange a very basic holiday in uk for few days to see a relative and the cost is so outrageous we can’t go.

How would I like them to cover rising costs… I’d like the government to step in.

the only loser here are parents. And ultimately women. Soon it will be unobtainable for a family to have two jobs… it’s starting to make more sense for me to stay at home or just get a shop job around school hours. I’d probably be better off.

Totally sucks but you’ll just have to put up with it. Sorry to sound like I don’t care but it won’t be for much longer 💗

daisyjgrey · 23/06/2022 07:09

How has your car insurance gone up by £75?!

While energy prices have went up, the amount childcare are raising it by is unreasonable. Are you seriously suggesting that OP's two or three kids are using an extra 150 worth of electricity and gas? Don't think so

I thought this? A month? That’s £900 a year? Mine didn’t go up that much when i had a bad crash

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 23/06/2022 07:13

You’ve also said yourself you’ll be leaving for school soon anyway… it’s a lot but assuming it’s just till September I’d just sit tight till then

Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:13

Two cars, we have claimed this year and I’ll shop around to get a better deal.

OP posts:
Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:14

If the after school club put prices up we are stuffed. From September we will have 3 kids there.

For a full day of half day session? What’s that as a % of costs. Do they offer the 30 hours?

transformandriseup · 23/06/2022 07:17

Mine went up 10% so glad we are not paying for two.

Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:19

£5 extra per day. I have twins so that’s an extra £10 per day for me. We already make use of 30 free hours.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/06/2022 07:31

Of course it’s not just the parents who lose out- the staff, all their costs have increased. Near on Every single person is less well off nowadays.
yes there is a bigger issue around better funded childcare in this country- but it’s never been a vote winner and the government spent decades ensuring the narrative is “your kids your problem”

Tillsforthrills · 23/06/2022 07:31

It’s not just energy though, food and maintenance , staff wages etc.

I’d be surprised if nurseries didn’t have to up their fees with everything rising.

KittenKong · 23/06/2022 07:33

So that’s quite a large daily amount for the nursery ;adding up all the children).

The 30 free hours fees given birth the council are nowhere near enough to cover the actual costs (I used to work for a nursery) so it sounds like they are desperately trying to claw back some of that plus the energy cost rises (maybe the also have a mortgage on the property?)

It’s still not fair on parents though.

WulyJmpr · 23/06/2022 07:35

Are you using the tax free childcare?

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 23/06/2022 07:39

They're a business. If their operating costs increase, their product also increases in price. It's no different to any other business.

Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:53

Yeah we do use tax free childcare, that does help!

my husband has just told me the car insurance increase isn’t that much but he’s still shopping around to get a better deal/threaten to leave! The mortgage is that increase unfortunately we didn’t get in before the last Bank of England rise.

Im just annoyed. As £5 doesn’t seem loads but when you have twins that go nearly full time, it’s quite a lot!

OP posts:
Elsa2000 · 23/06/2022 07:56

Honestly, it wasn’t planned that I would have twins. They are a complete chance! Feel like people like me are punished all the time financially.

I get that they are a business but I really do feel that the government should step in. As a country our childcare costs are disgusting… one of the worst in the world.

£5 increase a day per child does seem a bit excessive. If they have an average of 20 kids in nursery per day, all paying an extra £5, that's £2000 a month. Surely their energy costs haven't gone up by that much?

Sirzy · 23/06/2022 08:26

Given that business energy isn’t capped in the same way as domestic energy and adding in the cost increase for everything else it’s not hard to see how prices will have increased that much.

HairyScaryMonster · 23/06/2022 08:37

It's a strange time to put up fees, but seeing more rises in the autumn and the cost of food going up too, it seems reasonable.
