Feeling really uncomfortable after comment from builder

I’m currently having my drive relaid. As part of that I’ve had to have the large driveway gates removed while this is happening. Due to the layout this means that my floor to ceiling kitchen window is currently exposed to the road so whenever I’m in my kitchen the neighbours and any passing pedestrians/ cars can see right into my kitchen. It’s only for a couple of weeks and it hasn’t really bothered me.

Chatting to the main builder today as he was giving me an update. He said that he was hoping that he’d be able to get the gates back on at the beginning of next week. I replied that would be great and that the neighbours and anyone walking into town was probably sick to death of seeing me making breakfast in my pyjamas. Builder’s assistant then piped up with “yeah, and the rest” and laughed and main builder sniggered and gave his assistant a sort of half joking/ half warning look. I just sort of smiled and then went inside but I’ve spent the rest of the day worrying about what he meant.

I’m never inappropriately dressed when I’m in my kitchen. I’m in my dressing gown with messy hair and no make up when I make breakfast in the morning but that’s as bad as it gets. Now I’m paranoid that I’ve been picking my nose or something when I’ve forgotten I was overlooked.

Do you think it was just a harmless comment? I don’t understand why he’d make it unless he thought I’d been doing something unacceptable.

Yes it's a harmless comment, he was looking of a quick way to make a joke and that was the best one he could come up with. Sometimes off-the-cuff jokes don't necessarily make sense.

Don't read into this it's really not worth your time.

FabFitFifties · 22/06/2022 20:50

He was just trying to be witty, but failed. I wouldn't give it another thought.

Fushiadreams · 22/06/2022 20:51

He was just making a joke op.

WonderingWanda · 22/06/2022 21:08

You're overthinking it. He was trying to be funny implying that people will be seeing you naked.

heyitsthistle · 22/06/2022 21:09

Definitely overthinking this one 😌

AtrociousCircumstance · 22/06/2022 21:10

He was trying to be flirtatious but fucked it up. Plus, sleazy. Don’t worry about it.

IndecisionnCentral · 22/06/2022 21:12

Banter.

Not great banter, but definitely harmless/throw away comment!

BurnishedSteel · 22/06/2022 21:15

Slightly ill-judged joke, harmless.

Phew, thank you everyone. I’ve been racking my brain all afternoon wondering if I’d been spotted scratching my arse or drinking milk out of the bottle or something terrible.

Slightly illjudged as that's quite a personal statement but I think it was meant humorously rather than smithy.

Bryonny84 · 22/06/2022 21:39

Really don't want to stereotype builders/workmen but they do give you the "luv/darlin" chat/banter. Just chat in my experience in the hope you'll give them tea and sandwiches. Wouldn't give it a second thought.

They can only have seen that if you’d been doing that 😉

the guy was being a tosser and the ‘half’ warning from the Boss says a lot. I bet he had a bollocking once you were out of sight
